Inauguration Day Open Thread

We will march across

Those stereotypes that were marked for us

The answers obvious

We switch the consonants

Change the sword to words and lift continents

Rise, together we rise

  1. Just got off a conference call with one of our customers in Poland (Roche Pharmaceutals) – and they also wanted our call early enough so they can go watch the inaguration.

And got a txt from my 18 year old daughter who has never had any interest in politics. She wanted to know what time the speech is.

      1. Stuck in the office with actually a lot on my plate today.  My wife and Mom just called and the fact that they were so surprised I couldn’t watch is just making it worse.

        The curse of job security…

  2. Flipping from a finished show to another channel my mother and I came across the tale end of something.  It was a choral group on stage in a theater. Mixed race on stage and off. The only line being sung to many raised hands clapping was, “Change……you can believe in.”

Is it any wonder that the cons often object to the alleged perfection, the sainthood of Obama?  The guy hasn’t even proved his mettle and he’s being praised like JC hisself.

If we wonder why people adored Hitler, here is your answer.

    1. I take it you mean that because the country is in such dire straights, the masses attach themselves to anyone who brings a sense of hope and accomplishment. If so, that’s where the analogy ends.

    2. No, the guy is not perfect. We just don’t yet know his imperfections. Don’t rain on the parade. It is very cool what is happening in our country. There are others, even white people and Latinos, who might have the skills to have won this kind of election and bring together such divergent folks, but this is the guy who did it.

Didn’t Jon Bon Jovi do a great job singing the other day?

    3. Come on, reread what I said.  I didn’t compare Obama to Hitler. I’m comparing some Americans with some Germans back whe. It’s about people.

I was very succinct in my point that we are seeing how the masses can idolize a political leader.  In the case of Obama, even before he does anything as president.

        1. but it is also obvious he had a talent to get people to follow him unconditionally and without question, which is what I think Parsing was trying to express.

Now that we have all violated Godwin’s law lets enjoy the pomp and ceremony today.

        2. …you really need to read my statement over and over.  Or something.  No way did I compare Obama to Hitler.  It was a comment on followers, of adulation.

If I was saying that Obama is like Hitler, would I have supported the man once he got the nomination?  I think not.

I guess this is how stupid wars get started.

            1. No political leader in modern history bears the mantle of adulation as does Hitler.  Sometimes he IS the appropriate object.

              Thanks for understanding.

                  1. That’s why Godwin’s law was coined. If you can’t make your point without mentioning Hitler, it’s probably a crappy point.

I’m really surprised you’re going to such trouble to defend comparing Obama to Hitler. It’s almost as bad as your defense of Rush Limbaugh’s racism. Sometimes you just pick fights over weird things.

                    1. I’m pretty sure Godwin’s law says that arguments devolve to eventually bringing up Hitler.

I brought him up right outta the gate.  No Godwin’s Law.

                  2. Hitler is not the only example of charismatic…for the record, Hitler demonstrated the power of hate to motivate..

Let us hope we never see his like  again…

A lot of people identify with Obama, his struggles and his rhetoric…. I got a kick out of David Axlerod this AM…he was on MSNBC and said..”.so many millions of people helped Obama get here..and evidently they all showed up today in DC”

There is a roster in my head of people, may of whom have already passed on, who struggled and worked for the kind of country and world that Obama is pointing to….well, hell, I can’t put it into words, so I will not try…

I find myself just saying out loud, hoping they might hear…”See, sometimes it works.”

  3. So apparently the order of the ex-Presidents is G.H.W.Bush, then Carter, then Clinton. What’s the logic? I’d figure Carter’s first. The vice presidents were in the order Mondale, Quayle, Gore, which makes more sense.

  4. .

apparently, one of the central figures attempted suicide, failed, and ended up in a wheel chair for the ceremony.

I’ll post more whn I find out who it was.

    .

  5. As much as I’m chagrined by a liberal Dem being sworn in, I can’t help but feel the intense, prideful emotion of seeing such a great story of a man – a uniquely American story – being sworn in as my President.

I’m not selectively patriotic when it suits my agenda – the man is my President, and I respect the office and the man.

Right now, I’m thinking that the battles he has within his own party will be some of the most interesting and historic of the next four years.

Congrats to so many of you pols folks that volunteered and worked your asses off to get President Obama elected.  It’s an honor to debate with most of you that take such an interest in our country, the greatest man has ever known.

    Enjoy the day!

  6. …I’m going to be filing a claim on behalf of an OIF Vet who’s in Jeffco Jail. He survived an IED attack in a convoy on his 2nd tour, and tried to stop his friend from bleeding out before the medevac arrived.

Since his vehicle was not the target of the IED, his injury has been declared by the DoD to be “non-combat related.” Apparently, when the vehicle in front of you explodes in a fireball, and  your vehicle hits it at 60mph, it’s not combat related.

He has severe PTSD as a result of that day.

Starting today, we have a President that will work to take of the soldier, sailors, airmen and marines that were willing, without hesitation, to fight and die for this country.

Instead of using them for props during a speech, he’s going to open up the VA Health Care system to everyone who deserves it, not just a narrow slice of the population that kept getting smaller and smaller with each Executive Order.

Instead of running away from the bloody pile of bodies and shattered lives that Bush created, he will face this dire challenge head-on, and as Lincoln so simply put it: “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan.”

Goodbye, you fucking Deserter Incompetent NeoCon Fuck – Stay in your Texas Compound, and don’t dare come out again.

    1. I’ll be looking for a job with the VA if they have anything I can do.

With President Obama in office, I feel like more people of conscience and ability will be more willing to serve their country however they can.

      1. http://www.va.gov/jobs/

While I have dreams of firing the entire VA claims staff, the VA Health Care system is the FINEST in US, bar none. Yes, the Denver Hospital is an old dog, the people there have a dedication to duty that I find lacking in most private health care systems.

        1. A survey a couple of years ago asked people how happy they were with their medical delivery system.  The VA came out on top of private care, Medicare, Medicaid, HMO’s.

Now, what was that about government not delivering good services?

  7. ..as a Buddhist, I am well-versed in the concept of Karma:

Al Qaeda Struck by Bubonic Plague

“At least 40 al-Qaeda fanatics died horribly after being struck down with the disease that devastated Europe in the Middle Ages… [Bubonic plague] swept through insurgents training at a forest camp in Algeria, North Africa. It came to light when security forces found a body by a roadside. The victim was a terrorist in AQLIM, the largest and most powerful al-Qaeda group outside the Middle East.”

  8. We have a chance to take advantage of the optimism surging through this country. We have a chance to unite as a people, looking beyond the words that have divided us by race, origin, orientation, and ideology.

The challenges we face are an opportunity to appeal to the best in our nature, and to achieve our greater potential as a nation.

When we disagree, let’s search for a solution instead of engaging in needless antagonism. Let’s look for a way to help each other, fight our own ignorance and learn what we don’t yet know. We should endeavor to educate others, to share our experiences.

Indifference can’t be an option. The choice to do nothing is still a choice.

  9. OK, St. Augustine grass by the palm tree….

I wrote the following, part of a poem after we started bombing Baghdad:

    “America!

The earth I tried to kiss returning to your imperfect but struggling toward Godhood soil when I landed at JFK once upon a middle east journey

    America!

The people hoping and dreaming and sometimes mistaken but always grappling for righteousness.

    America!”

  10. I haven’t seen much domestic press given to Obama’s young speechwriter. Here’s an article in the Guardian, the English paper, though:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl

Jon Favreau, 27, is, as Obama himself puts it, the president’s mind reader. He is the youngest chief speechwriter on record in the White House, and, despite such youth, was at the centre of discussions of the content of today’s speech, one which has so much riding on it.

For a politician whose rise to prominence was largely built upon his powers as an orator, Obama is well versed in the arts of speech-making. But today’s effort will tower over all previous ones.

It is not just that Obama has set an extremely high bar by invoking the inaugural speeches of Abraham Lincoln as his inspiration – admitting to feeling “intimidated” when he read them. It is also that, as he begins his term with the US in an economic crisis and two wars, he knows he needs to kick start his presidency with a soaring rhetoric that both moves and motivates the American people.

  11. the CBC’s coverage of this is just sooo much more relaxing than the American networks.  From the sometimes frantic commentary on MSNBC to the snooze fest of Charlie Gibson on ABC, the dulcet tones (and goofy accent) of Peter Mansbridge just comes across better, IMO…

    1. They will be released in March. Bush felt that their trials were fair, but that their sentences were too long.

Other than that, though, he was fairly stingy with the last-minute stuff.

The real scandal lies with the midnight rule changes to many environmental regulations.

      1. which I heard from Atrios.

Namely, if Bush had pardoned Libby and others, then they’d have no problem testifying. Possibly against him. As long as the threat of criminal prosecution exists, they can invoke the Fifth Amendment protection. So in some way he may just be shielding himself from having underlings implicating him.

That might be too cynical even for me, though.

  12. So two weeks ago global warming was a myth, according to our resident righties, since a cold day in January apparently proves that the global temperature isn’t rising. Is it fair to say that two days (and counting) of T-shirt/shorts weather in January confirms global warming beyond any doubt to them?

Oh, I notice they haven’t posted anything on it. How odd.
