Allard Seeking Udall Opponent in 2006

  • by: Colorado Pols

We first reported back in June that Senator Wayne Allard has told colleagues that he will run for re-election in 2008, and it sounds like he’s making moves towards going after Democratic Congressman Mark Udall, his likely opponent, two years early.

Allard has been working with the NRCC to recruit a challenger to Udall in 2006, who first won a narrow victory in 1998 and has not had a serious challenger since. While they acknowledge that knocking off a four-term incumbent Udall will be difficult, and probably unlikely, they are hopeful that a strong challenger could at least drive up Udall’s negatives prior to 2008.

The early word is that Allard and the NRCC are looking for a candidate with a strong business background to run against Udall, but they are also considering asking State Senator Shawn Mitchell to run as option #2. Mitchell couldn’t beat Udall, but he wouldn’t have to give up his Senate seat to run and could use the raise to pick up some Republican favors and increase his own name ID. Mitchell wanted to run for Attorney General in 2006, but can’t now that John Suthers is the incumbent, and might jump at the chance to raise his profile for another race later.

  1. Mark Udall will not run now that Allard is going to be in the race.  There will be a twist along the way that takes him out of it if Allard indeed seeks reelection.

  2. Udall begins to lose credibility if he keeps backing out of races; I predict he’ll still run in ’08, whether or not Allard decides to go for another term.

The GOP needs to come up with more than a paper candidate if they want to knock down Udall in ’06; unless Udall has to actually break a sweat, everyone in CO-2 will be ignoring the GOP candidate no matter what he says.

  3. That’s what makes politics interesting and keeps us ‘glued’ to the blogesphere.

Udall isn’t scared of Allard or whomever he can talk into running against Mark.

Udall in ’06 and ’08…what’s next?

  4. I just marvel at the way that Republicans, when they get nervous, do a pitch-perfect imitation of a little puppy and run around in a circle peeing on the living room rug.

Mark Udall is not “thinking about” running for the Senate in 2008…he IS running for the Senate.  This is good news – finally we will have a Democrat to represent us.

  5. Why is it so hard to believe that Mark Udall can be beaten?  Seems that the right GOP candidate could keep him on his heels defending some of the votes he’s cast in Congress.

  6. Henry-
Allard’s running scared?  That’ll be the day.

Did you watch the same election I did in 02 when everybody said it was going to be a tight race (within 4 points)?  Then Strickland got whooped, AGAIN!

Let Udall run, another one bites the dust.

  7. Okay, before I get hounded I might as well correct my previous post, Strickland didn’t get destroyed, he only lost by 5 points.  BUT, it still wasn’t the “down to the wire” race everyone was predicting.  Allard won by a larger margin of victory than Salazar won by this year.

In 08, Allard will be a two term incumbent,
    Good Luck!

  8. Billy,  it is ‘so’ hard to beielve that Udall can be beat because he is a good Congressman and keeps up with the needs of those he represents.
He is well liked,  smart and energetic.  And,  a pretty good fund raiser.  That’s why I think he would be darn hard to beat.  And,  I don’t believe he is too worried about who runs in ’08…I think he has made up his mind to run and win.

  9. Allard is in the Senate not the House. NRCC is with the House. NRSC is with the Senate.

Either way, rumor has it Pete Coors may decide to run for the Senate seat. Hopefully this time without the likes of his last crew!

  10. I disagree. I believe that Sean Mitchell can beat Udall. It is something called charisma people. I have been watching for a while and I think next to BB, no other candidate in this state could really make me give one. They are all lame. Udall is a nice guy, but there is nothing in him/about him that could ever make me care.

  11. I saw Shawn Mitchell debate Rutt Bridges at a Longmont Rotary meeting a couple of years ago. I was appalled at some of the classless and inappropriate statements Rep. Mitchell made. It was almost embarrasing.

  12. Hi Not So Sure.  This is Shawn.  Say, I don’t remember saying anything at the debate with Rutt that I wouldn’t want Mom to know about, but if I left a bad impression with you, I’d sure like to avoid similar mistakes in the future.  Would you be willing to give me an idea of the statements, gestures or whatever that weren’t appreciated?  The request is sincere, and I won’t argue back.  Hope to hear from you at shawnmitch@aol.com
