(Three words: “Musgrave district director” – promoted by Colorado Pols)
The Larimer County Republican Party vacancy committee — who just selected Kevin Lundberg to fill the vacancy in SD-15 left by now-County Commissioner Steve Johnson — has selected former Musgrave district director B.J. Nikkel to fill out the rest of Lundberg’s term in HD-49.

A Republican vacancy committee Saturday morning chose B.J. Nikkel, a former U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave staffer, for an open House District 49 seat.
The district covers most of Larimer County except for Fort Collins and Loveland, though outlying areas of those cities are represented by the seat. It also covers Windsor, Timnath and LaPorte.
Nikkel, a longtime political activist, beat Ray Walter of Windsor 8-2 for the seat, which came open after Kevin Lundberg was chosen Jan. 10 to fill the Senate District 15 post vacated by Republican Steve Johnson, who resigned after he won a county commissioner seat in November.
The committee met at the Allnut Funeral Home in Fort Collins.
“Really what’s most important is that she will represent the district well, and that’s what our job is all about,” Lundberg said, adding that Nikkel is cut of the same cloth he is. [Pols emphasis] “I think she will continue to stand for the solid Reagan-esque conservative values District 49 is all about.”

— much smaller, for one thing, the Nikkel-Walters vote was 8-2 and the Lundberg-Lynch vote was 86-42, at least according to the Coloradoan — but has some overlap in members.
I’m clueless about Republican vacancy committee rules and procedures.
But a 10-member vacancy committe is about the same number as how a multi-county district central committee is defined by statute. That would mean it would the Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary of the District, of Larimar County GOP and of Weld County GOP and any Republican legislators who live in the district.
So my assumption here is that the GOP made their HD49 central committee also their HD49 vacancy committee.
Dems typically expand the vacancy committees to include more people such as precinct committee people etc.
and the huge vote in the Senate district vacancy suggests the Republicans included all the precinct people too.
rather than the Allnut Funeral Home?
Is the Allnut Marilyn’s latest business venture, where right wing “ideas” go to die?
The meeting place chosen, Allnutt (note the two t’s, Coloradoan), isn’t even in HD 49. I bet Middle of the Road could have helped suggest a place in the district that would have met the requirements. Actually, a central location in the district may have been Poudre Valley REA offices.
But nobody asked me, for some reason.
they could have met at the Stanley Hotel if they wanted to stay in the district — and still keep it macabre.
but I agree with CT below. The symmetry and poetry of meeting at Allnut(t)s is perfect.
No surprises here, I think. A lot of resignation among Party moderates. Up in Fort Collins, there are tons of great places to meet besides the funeral home. I’ll bet that the price was right… no charge. And besides, the places we’d like to meet in Fort Collins are owned by Democrats and environmentalists… Too much liberal undertow for the culturally-sensitive dingbats of the far right.
It is really quiet in funeral parlors. Unless the organ music is turned up.
the potential for analogies to the CO GOP is killing me…
She’s smart, articulate — and was centered enough to exit the Musgrave circle a long time ago knowning full well the wrath the nut jobs would inflict upon her. She’ll be a good addition and breath of fresh air to the Republican line-up; while BJ and I may not agree on some things, she’s approachable, listens and is always respectful. Looking forward to having you under the dome BJ!
is correct in his assessment of Nikkel, then this is indeed good news for Democrats…the oppposition party has not learned the lesson of the past few elections in which the voters of Colorado have not bought what they are selling.
He will be sworn in Jan 22, 8:30am in the House Chambers.
