Alright people, it’s that time once again. Hopefully the weather won’t be 0 degrees for this one. Plus, I promise to be there this time. Seriously. For real.
Be there, and be square.
Thoughts on place and time? I was thinking that we could do it Sunday the 25th at around the same time the past few have started. 4:00, I think?
My suggestion for the place this time is Sam’s No. 3 on 15th and Curtis. Great food, and there’s a bar attached. This is my suggestion only, though, so if there’s somewhere else you guys want to go, just post it below.
UPDATE: Location is now up in the air. I got the sense that the time and date were fine, but after a bipartisan solution of My Brother’s Bar, I checked and found that they are closed on Sundays. Should it be the Cheeky Monk again? Should it even be in Denver? I mean, we already got Bennet, what more do we want?
Oh and sxp, don’t forget my beer.

Less concerned about food than high-quality beer, preferably strong and/or microbrewed.
This being my first planned attendance of such an event I don’t have many places I’ve been, so I’m all in favor of Cheeky Monk. It looks pretty awesome based on the website…because Belgians make the best beer.
So now we start at 9:00am, meaning that I can’t see anything getting in the way.
Having said that, keep in mind that I haven’t talked to the wife yet.
So far we’ve run the range of Lower Downtown, Capitol Hill and — with this suggestion — the heart of downtown.
How about someplace a bit farther afield?
You want Lakewood don’t you.
I’d suggest My Brother’s Bar at 15th and Platte, used to be a great political meet-up place, plenty of parking, casual atmosphere.
It’s my wife’s grandfather’s favorite bar. I would definitely like to have it there.
like Ritter, Bennet, Kennedy and the rest of ’em, but it’s got easy I-25 access and they won’t throw you out for lingering. And you can’t beat the famous jalepeno Cheeseburgers.
There’s plenty of parking at the REI lot across Platte, provided one of the REI Clones isn’t manning the booth at the entrance.
Getting to I25 is obtuse at best – you have to go past REI, past the aquarium and then onto I25, but it is better than the rest of Downtown.
get off an 23rd Ave and drive for a blink of an eye and you’re there. If you wanna be there, that is. MBB bites, in my not-humble opinion.
I’m baffled as to how someone wouldn’t like MBB.
Why’s that?
…especially because every time I’ve been there I wonder why anyone goes there. The service is bad, the seating is uncomfortable, the temperature is always too hot or too cold, and it’s too, too close in there. The patio is an exception, I grant you, but not a big deal in January.
oh well, we suffer so up here 🙂
and smugly, at that.
It can never be in Boulder because so many Polsters smoke (sorry, RSB), carry concealed weapons and curse in traffic.
Don’t know if the place you’re suggesting is.
I will come pick you up at the bus station and take you back if you want.
Must be youth.
Thanks droll as well.
But I promise you, you don’t want me in your car. Not as a driver, not as a passenger (where I spend all my time thinking about how much better the ride would be if I were driving; and if you’re my wife, telling you explicitly).
I saw this cartoon many years ago, and without the internet I might never have found it again. It perfectly explains what’s wrong with me when I drive.
You’ll need a Dem so you don’t get pushed out while the car is moving.
I’m willing, but only if you’re not a nervous passenger. Young and dumb, but I promise to stay off my phone. 🙂
It’s next door to the REI flagship store (in the old Forney Museum building), and they are on the No. 10 line, plus there is probably one coming out of downtown on 15th Street but the guy wasn’t sure.
Here’s a map:
http://www.rei.com/map/store/18
But that place looks like a short walk from Union Station, which will be fine.
But my offer of a ride is still there if you want it.
from Union Station, though it is a pleasant walk on a nice day with some great views of the Platte and Cherry Creek along the way. Of course, the wind whipping down the valley across the open water can make it a hellish walk when it’s chilly out. You might want to trade in your Birks if you’re walking, unless you’re wearing very warm wool socks.
…as they should, they won’t get views of Cherry Creek, but they can catch a glimpse, from slightly afar, of the ridiculous new public art adorning the Highland Bridge! Westword blog called it “Saggy Boobs Electric Penis” or some such.
As much as I want to meet LB and RSB and RG, I think you might be the most fun to drink with. (Particularly since I’m beginning to suspect they’re all teetotalers.)
Does a mean Oxycontin habit count?
But if you want a roofie colada, they’re on me.
only on festive occasions, darling.
but, alas, I cannot attend this summit of political brainpower. Unlike you liberal elites, I have to work 2 or 3 jobs to bring home the bacon and the fry it up in a pan. I can’t take time for intellectual exploration. But, y’all have fun and don’t you dare talk about me behind my back!
Is it OK to talk to your side from miles away? 🙂
where all your comments involved alcohol (including calling me Bacardi 151, which took me several minutes to figure out).
Maybe that was just for the holiday season.
…nor did I offer a narrow view of what constitutes a “festive occasion”
🙂
here. along 15th Street, many buses stop at Vitamin Cottage (Natural Grocers!), which is across the street from doomed MBB: eg., 10, 28, 28B, 32, 44.
I’ll work my calendar over to open up some time.
They’ll be built in Colorado Springs or Manitou, whose watering holes far surpass those in our sadly provincial capitol. The Rocket Room? The Ritz? Phantom Canyon? The Loop? T & B’s? Cheaper, better, friendlier, cooler…but go ahead, stay in Denver-we don’t want you to come ruin our poor, dysfunctional, Bruce-addled little burg…
Gold Hill. I’d show up for that.
Jack Quinn’s in Downtown. I find numerous excuses to have an “offsite meeting” there with my Army Buddies, or when on vet bizniz….
I don’t care how great a bar is or how well priced it is…I need to be able to get to and from it. No bar in Colorado Springs will ever be good because the city is so poorly designed. You can’t walk/bike/transit anywhere useful and it is spread far enough apart that a cab ride would be prohibitively expensive…but then so is that DUI. I prefer drinking with an exit strategy.
Depends on where you live. Most of us godless communist shiftless crypto-liberals hang out close to downtown-and yep, we ride our bikes or walk or even take the bus. You’re right only if you define the encircling suburbs as useful-but I’m not sure that many Denverites transit/bike/walk to the remote burbs-and biking on the busy streets of downtown Denver is not for the faint of heart…and Jack Quinn’s is definitely great, for military & non-military alike!
fasten seat belt before clicking
but I was very impressed. As depressing as it is to go to Colorado Springs (and if the infinite chain stores don’t kill you before you reach downtown, the dessication of the actual buildings might), I have to say that was high-quality.
I think the branch of Il Vicino (there’s another in Denver, for example) is practically dead center in downtown. Phantom Canyon makes enjoyable beer, as well.
Slightly off the main downtown street.
I don’t have any conflicts with that so far.
She seemed nice.
Excellent locale. I’ll be there, weather-permitting.
Or has a consensus switch been agreed to above?
If so, please update the main diary text.
So we need to pick another place. Should we just go with the Cheeky Monk again? Thoughts?
OK, just kidding
Jokes, people. Jokes.
he he
Diamond Cabaret right?
Shotgun Willie’s? We’re trying to get out of downtown/Cap Hill!
For the beer snobs, nothing can beat The Yardhouse at Colorado Mills.
http://www.yardhouse.com/locat…
My first time in the joint, the server boasted that they had any beer I could EVER desire. Slipping easily into smartass mode, I ordered a De Koenick, which is damn impossible to find outside of Holland.
The server replied “coming right up!”
I wept.
from the headquarters of Colorado Pols …
Though your description is tempting. Especially since I checked out the beer menu, and my “beer snob” beer is Victory’s Golden Monkey. Well done, Yardhouse beer guy, well done.
Might I suggest the Vine Street Pub. It is like being in Boulder…but still in Denver. I mean, Mountain/Southern Sun are like the most popular drinking destinations in Boulder as far as I can tell, and this is the Denver equivalent. Easy access via the 15 bus route.
It fills the beer snob requirement as well. The Kind Nitro is like the ambrosia of beers.
Any verdict on location?
