Bill Owens Gets Around

  • by: Colorado Pols

We know what you’re thinking, but that’s not the kind of rumor we deal in here.

We’re talking about lame-duck governor Bill Owens’ aggressive cultivation of new legislative candidates for 2006. The word is that he’s aggressively working the phones, arranging posh dinners, inviting them to the Big Officehe’s engaged.

It’s easy to see why:

1. Owens, by all accounts, is convinced that if he leaves with a Dem majority intact, his legacy will be tarnished. That’s apparently more important to him than the impact of TABOR reform on his conservative image. He’s probably right about that, too.

2. More practically, his next move after governor will undoubtedly involve some type of  lobbying. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that it’s alot easier to lobby folks who owe it all to you.

With Referenda C&D becoming a more sharply partisan and divisive issue every day (as in “Bill Owens is now a Democrat“), this probably is a more productive way to spend those golden lame-duck months.

  1. Sheesh, it’s about time Owens tried to re-establish a GOP majority. If he’d spent more time maintaining it, he wouldn’t be in the mess he is.

  2. Shouldn’t that picture of the “Doctors” doing surgery on the link provided have “Dr. Johnson” with crossed-eyes? It would be more realistic if it did!

  3. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that a lot of people don’t like reading news with made up words in it, such as “alot”

  4. I don’t personally make too much of that; it’s a single $200 donation over three campaign cycles.  It’s more surprising that she’s a Republican activist and hasn’t contributed more than that.  Unless it’s all in $199 weekly donations.

  5. Jeff:

Stop smoking the bong.  There is zero liability (criminal or civil) for contributors who fail to list an occupation.  The campaign is responsible to get that information, and if they don’t there are all sorts of loopholes that the FEC recognizes (best efforts, etc.).  Candidates often have 5% or more of their donors with missing employer/occupation info.  Grow up.

  6. Agree with Phoenix.  This self-promoting amateur blogger is dredging up the bottom of the barrel.  Elections are supposed to use due diligence to collect that info, as well – look through an FEC report and see how many missing datapoints there are due to any kind of oversight – they have to try and get the info, but it’s hardly a “violating campaign finance law” because she didn’t put down her occupation, which everybody knows.

  7. Colorado Pols,

    So what?s the deal?

I’ve never heard the rumors. I live in DC.

But since you brought it up (no pun intended) could you please give an account.

Make it accurate, as you know I don?t swallow the regular baloney.

  8. Get a grip on yourselves.  The FEC doesn’t have a freakin’ thing to do with Refs. C&D.  The Colo Secretary of State’s Office is where any complaint about this election (C&D) will be filed.  An IRS status complaint would be filed with the IRS.

  9. The Jon Caldara/I.I. anti C&D website sucks with its stupid, gimmicky counter, but it still blows away the Pro C&D site.  Hello Katy Atkinson or whoever is running the show these days, your site has almost no useful information and is uninteresting.  As least at no on C&D I can see an exaggerated deficit piling up.

And Monica from D.C…?  I am sure you don’t swallow the regular baloney.

  10. On the heels of the parent post’s title and Monica’s “no pun intended”, “not swallowing the regular baloney” takes on a whole new meaning.

Let’s just not go there, shall we?  M’kay?  That’ll be great…

  11. I would say what is more surprising is that she hasn’t donated more consider her donation is TAX DUDUCTABLE.  How does this not sink into the melons of you people?  The Independence Institute is committing tax fraud plan and simple.  They are not a charity and they do not deserve a tax-exempt status.

United Way = Charity = Tax Exempt

Independence Institute = Shadow Campaign group = Tax Exempt

Like the counter on their lame site – the math just doesn’t add up.

  12. Actually, I don’t believe donations to FEC-regulated organizations or candidates are tax-deductable.

But I do think there’s something to dig into regarding the I.I.’s 501(c)(3) status; those types of organizations are not supposed to be running legislative ad campaigns…

  13. Or else maybe–just maybe–Owens is working for Republican candidates like he always has..because he is a partisan Republican.  Just a thought for the partisan Dems who run this blog and delight in tossing a few projectiles the GOP way.

  14. Right on Dawg.  And don’t you just love the certainty with which these Dem-bloggers express themselves — saying the next job for “the governor will undoubtedly involve some type of lobbying.”  They underestimate him.  I’ll take wager against that happening.  By the way, how many “types of lobbying” are there?  Don’t be ridiculous.
