I moved to Colorado in 2000. That was also the start of my ‘politico’ days. One of my introductions to Colorado politics included meeting Andrew Romanoff, along with several other organizers, in his home for coffee. I thought, ‘whose this guy?’ and left with an impression that Mr.Romanoff was a ‘nice guy’.
Two years later, I re-met him at a Renter’s Rights meeting. Watching him talk to people patiently and kindly about the issues of us lowly ‘renters’ and what we needed to have for a decent place to live, convinced me that Andrew Romanoff actually cared. Why does this matter? read on…
By the way – the youtube for the interview and sucessful Renter’s Rights bill.
I will be the first to admit,I don’t know the deal making that goes on behind closed doors for a Senate Seat. But when I look at the resume of someone like Andrew Romanoff, who was bandied about 2 years ago as a Gubernatorial candidate, I can’t believe that Ritter has best considered all options for this appointment.
While I have been silent on most subjects since the 2008 election, I will state that while I do not fully agree with David Sirota’s attack on Michael Bennett, I am well prepared to examine the Governor’s pick, not based on Mr. Bennett’s qualifications, but rather on the Governor’s lack of explanation for passing over several other qualified candidates, each of whom have served office and ‘earned their stripes’ in Colorado politics… Perlmutter, Fitzgerald, DeGette, etc. not least of which is Former House Majority Leader, Andrew Romanoff.
Maybe it doesn’t matter, maybe the Colorado GOP can’t field a contender vs. any Dem in 2010, so it doesn’t matter. But for guys like me, and people like me, who watch this process, it makes little sense.

The process itself is a bit confounding. We essentially have NO idea what went on. Considering the governor’s obsession with process (see the way the transition was conducted and the numerous blue ribbon commissions for examples of this) the way that this was handled is pretty surprising.
in support.
we should have a thoughtful conversation about this.
I remember how difficult it was in 2004 to take solace in Salazar’s incredibly difficult victory over the beer baron Coors.
It is not a seat that should be granted without consideration of other’s earned merits.
.
look down here in CD-5.
We’ve got a Congressman who got the job by doing the insider party stuff, and making the secret deals, that it took to get elected.
Don’t get me wrong – Congressman Lamborn is a nice enough guy.
But will he ever do any “leadership” on the big issues that are driving this country to ruin ?
…..Iraq War.
…..Financial Crisis.
…..Revoking the Constitution.
…..Health Care Reform.
…..Entitlements Reform.
….. etc.
No, he can’t, because fixing our problems would require him to bite some of the hands that fed him.
He is our Congressman for life because he “paid his dues” and thus was entitled. It was his turn.
You may see lots of difference between Lamborn and Romanoff, but if he was slighted because it was his turn,
then you are invested too heavily in the contemporary version of “good ol’ boy” politics.
.
And can you imagine the outrage if Romanoff had leaped from a state House seat into the Senate, bypassing Perlmutter, who has been paying his dues a lot longer than Romanoff and gotten further up the ladder, to boot?
If the Senate was so clearly Romanoff’s destiny, remind me why he didn’t run for the actual open Senate seat on the ballot this year.
vaulting over the much longer period DeGette had served in COngress…
You can come up with very good reasons for any of the top people to get it.
and plenty of reasons for disgruntlement among the supporters of everyone who didn’t get it. Romanoff’s people don’t have a monopoly on their umbrage.
…it would be stupid to do so. And probably insulting to the others.
Is this the explanation you desire from Ritter:
“Let’s see, why didn’t I pick Romanoff, let me count the reasons….And Perlmutter, please! Let’s list his faults….And don’t even get me started on Princess Di or we’ll be here all day….”
what is up for Romanoff now?
the other aforementioned candidates still have positions in government.
seems like a waste of talent.
…but I presume he will follow the plan he concocted over the past year, during which time he knew full well that his legislative term was ending. His plan may even call for patience and humility but I can’t say for sure, I’m just spitballin’ here.
No doubt the Crown Prince was making some plans without expecting the secretary of state and Senate seat to open up. Or maybe he had all his chips in a scenario where he took over for Coffman. Just think, Wil Armstrong very nearly screwed that up! The nerve!
now that his political career is on hold?
and be a Shadow Senator, kind of like Mike Miles has apparently been?
OK, maybe less insubstantially than Mike Miles.
Perhaps he will take some time to focus on passing the Bar.
Whatever he chooses to do I wish him the best of luck.
But, no one is entitled to a Senate seat.
I have every confidence that Andrew Romanoff will land on his feet despite a struggling economy.
he could always take up blogging. I hear the benefits suck, but the pay is lousy.
