And thus are the poisonous seeds we have sown reaped in the bitter harvest that is Trump.
But can you think of anything better to purge out those bad seeds than a Trump loss?
A Trump loss won't resolve the feeling of abandonment and displacement felt by his supporters. Although some of those feelings are misplaced, and revolve around race (both the black president's and our population's makeup), the ones that are based in economic hardship, the inability to provide for their children as their fathers did them, and the lack of any relief in sight are perfectly legitimate.
Also, not all those seeds were planted by Trump's party, and Democrats are going to have to come to grips with their own (and my own) complicity in the demonization of minorities through the drug wars and programs of mass incarceration and the labeling of minority youths as "superpredators," the marginalization of the poor through their "fixes" to the welfare state that demean and belittle those who ask for assistance when times are tough, and their relative coziness with the financial institutions and wealthy individuals whose greed and rapaciousness have worked to keep those Trump supporters down while eliminating the power of unions and killing the pensions that gave their ancestors hope.
A Trump loss isn't going to do jack to fix what ails those people. The only hope for them is that Clinton, the Democrats, and the Republicans all take a minute to figure out how their politics have broken this country and start putting it back together again. That's thin hope indeed.
Well, a Trump loss will do more for those dispossessed that a Trump victory would, that's for damn sure. Citizens United Uber Alles would mean the ultimate victory of the corporate state, as foreshadowed in Sinclair Lewis' "It can't Happen here." Those "under educated" voters so beloved by Trump were given a different label by Vladimir Lenin: "Useful Idiots."
