Elect Ray Rose: He's Neutral!

  • by: Colorado Pols

The Cortez Journal runs down Referenda C&D today and takes a look at area politicos and where they stand. Republican Representative Ray Rose of Montrose apparently can’t figure out whether C&D will hurt or help him politically, so he’s taking the incredible step of…staying neutral?

One Western Slope legislator who voted for allowing C to be on the ballot but did not vote for D said he is not taking a stance on the measures for the upcoming election. Rep. Ray Rose, R-Montrose, said he is remaining neutral on both C and D.

“Voters have the choice to further increase the size of our government or leave it the way it is,” Rose said. “Our state budget went from $13.1 billion to about $15.2, so we’re easing out of our economic downturn.”

Sorry Ray, but that’s not going to cut it. As an elected leader for the people, it’s your job to, you know, LEAD. On the other hand, maybe Rose is on to something: if you don’t take a stand, nobody can oppose you.

Elect Ray Rose: a neutral leader with no opinions!

  1. “As an elected leader for the people, it’s your job to, you know, LEAD.”

Really?  I thought such men were elected to serve, with leading being only an occasional necessary task of the position.

Is this why letters to congrescritters beginning “My Dear Elected Slave” are never answered?

I myself am a bit undecided on the referenda at the moment, whatever that’s worth.

  2. Kevin –

You are undecided?  Hum.  Let me help.  I figure if you are a Republican, then the reason is not because it is a fairly simple decision about $30. it is more about taking more and more “hits” against the GOP agenda, whereby, they are proving over and over, that most of them are VERY VERY RIGHT WING and are not interested in the support of their communities.

I waiting to hear why you appose this issue about a $30.00 refund check, or making a difference in your community.

  3. Peter – Only a left wing limosine liberal pinko wacko thinks that taking the money out of someone’s pocket isn’t a big deal.  Also, isn’t it more like $300, not $30, but really.

  4. As if the voters of HD 58 needed any further proof that Rep. Rose is an empty suit, he goes and does something like this.  With all of the strong leaders in Montrose and the rest of Southwest Colorado, my mind continues to be boggled by this guy’s lack of leadership.

  5. Peter,
You don’t need government to make a difference in your community. Be the change, don’t wait on government. Give your time, give your money. Thats what I do.

  6. Really?  Let me explain a couple of things about our government.  The IRS looks to take money out of your pocket no matter what your decision is in being a liberal, conservative or whatever.  You can either decide to limit the amount of tax with charitable giving or with funds to support your community.  In any regard, if you (Conservatives) think that life is FREE … without any responsibility to your COMMUNITY, then find a nice remote ISLAND, where no one has to listen to your pinky little complaints about helping others.  REPUKES just simply make me want to throw-up!!!

    BBbbbLLLLAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW …

GO READ YOUR BIBLES … Start doing what Jesus told you to do … and, stop doing exactly the opposite of what the Minister, Priest, or who ever tells you to give to your community.

    BBbbbLLLLAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW …

  7. I don’t think that life is free. I give time and money to my community. I’m in the game. I don’t sit around waiting for government.BBbbbLLLLAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW ..
    Freak.

  8. Peter Peter, your anger cup runneth over.  Many, many Republicans are very active and giving members of their communities.  Wanting a smaller government and more money to keep and yes, even to give, is not the horror you seem to think it is.  You may be right about the need for C and D, but your arguments will resonate better if you could “ratchet down” the stereotyping.

  9. People look to their Representatives to have a good grasp of these issues.  It’s a Republic, not a Democracy; we elect people who we believe will be informed and can make good decisions for us.  These should not necessarily be the decisions of a majority of the People, but must instead constitute the Representative’s best informed opinion on what would best serve the People.  And so, when the time comes that the People are asked to vote on an issue, it is to their Represenative that they often turn.  Rep. Rose has (hopefully) been involved in the Colorado Economic Recovery Act discussions that took place in the Lege this year; he should be able to assess whether the Referenda are the best thing for the People, and he should be able to express that sentiment before his constituents.  (He voted for it, so why is it so hard now?)  It’s what the voters hired him for; it’s his job.

  10. Becky –

I understand your point, but I have had to hear the very ugly words from the GOP since Bush took office.  The most hateful remarks will not be soon forgotten by me and the Democratic Party.  I will never forget the suggestion that the Democrats are not “American” for their views against war.  I will never forget the words from President Bush, “you are either with us, or against us.”  Well, if the GOP wants to divide this country with aims of creating a negative view to them, they certainly achieved it on their own accord.  The GOP refuses to here “truths.”  The GOP lies and provides so much proof that they are far from Christians.

Listen to my words, “the Republican Party represents the rich and wealthy.”  AND, the GOP can only think of themselves, rather than the consideration of those who don’t have their level of wealth and social status.  They have little concern for the environment, education, social justice, the homeless, and their communities.  They seem to believe that the world should only revolve around the view from their expensive “sunglasses” and church activities, for their aims of controling our society far from a true democratic consensus.  I hereby do not believe in a theocracy, because in my experience, the Republicans have absolutely proved to me that they most generally seek more wealth, to succeed in keeping it all to themselves.

Good luck to the GOP and their demand that we all become like them.  I am a Democrat for as long as I live, like it or not.  AND, I am a Christian “American.”

  13. This particular piece has been brought to my attention.  I know for a fact what happened in the lege and Rep. Ray Rose acted as the Statesman he is (please look up the definition as opposed to politician).  He has always supported TABOR but like most well informed leaders voted for the legislation that is now C but the legislation that created D is flawed and he knows it.  Tabor says we can vote and that is your opportunity in November.  Pick a side and support it with your time.  Get a life!  Attacking Rep. Rose demeans all of us D’s or R’s.

  14. I’d say Rose knows full well that C and D are necessary to get the state out of the Tabor morass, but he can’t go there because of all the anti-tax fanatics in the GOP.

  15. Peter.  I am not rich, nor do I go to church, nor do I question the patriotism of Democrats, nor to I equate Iraq war opposition with anti-Americanism.  Nor do I lie.  Yet, I am a Republican.  And it’s people like you that make me glad I am.

You see, it’s nice that you want to take more of my money and be generous with it, forcing me to either give it to the government or charity.  But I believe that’s also part my decision, wouldn’t you agree?  Perhaps not.

I may vote for or against C and D – I am undecided.  But more money does not always make government better, and more government spending does not always help the economy.

“democratic consensus”? That’s just silly, isn’t it?  Bush is the democratic consensus president, didn’t he get like 51%?  I guess if you’re smart like you are, and you know how things should work, well, that’s just the way they should be, right?  The minority can just, like, prescribe how things should work so long as they are morally superior?  That about how it works?  Peter, you are an idiot.

As for Phoenix:  “People look to their Representatives to have a good grasp of these issues. It’s a Republic, not a Democracy; we elect people who we believe will be informed and can make good decisions for us. These should not necessarily be the decisions of a majority of the People, but must instead constitute the Representative’s best informed opinion on what would best serve the People. And so, when the time comes that the People are asked to vote on an issue, it is to their Represenative that they often turn.”  Thanks for defining the job of a politician as you see it.  Do you always write to get from point A to point C?  I think elected officials themselves have a better handle on their job, which by definition is to get elected.  Save the civics lessons for the children.  I don’t think politicians tell people how to vote, I think it’s the other way around.

  16. Rose is truly a statesman, ellen is right.  I’d say he’s further to the right than me on most issues, but I commend him for having difficulty with this decision.

It proves that he isn’t over-simplifying the issue and pandering to his base to protect his political hide.

Thoughtful consideration like Rose’s is something all informed voters should do — in general, but about this issue in particular. However, the partisans are foaming at the mouth, accusing each other of being traitors, RINOs or just plain stupid.

We may have been the first state to implement TABOR, but it doesn’t mean we got all the details right.

From where I sit, with my $35,000 a year income, that paltry $60 I got from the state last year won’t be missed. I’m willing to forego it, then hold my lawmakers’ feet to the fire on their spending decisions.

  17. Last time I checked, Rose is an “Elected Representative” not an “Elected Leader”, and he’s representing poorly on this issue.  Everyone knows the quickest way to burn money is to send it to Denver and let the bureaucrats have at it.

  18. Civiclesson –

First, the deffinition of “Consensus” is not majority rule.  Consensus means doing what it right for your community (citizenry) and placing aside your bias for what is best for the country or community.  The ideological views of the Republicans are staged to keep them in control of power.  This is not Democratic.  The reduction of taxes by the Republicans is designed to take power from the Democrats, remove social programs that have proved good for the US economy (this ideology was proven successful when President Clinton opened the country to progressive theories and was the first President to pay down the US National Debt in a very long time).  Without a great many of the soical programs (that have been removed) it places more control in the hands of the RELIGIOUS RIGHT.  The reason is because the BUSH ADMINISTRATION was seeking to destroy the non-profit sector with the funds redirected to “FAITH BASED ORGANIZATIONS.”  This plan would have completely and uttlerly removed the voice of the Democrats, because then Democrats would have been FORCED to seek financial help or a decision to become a member of a church organization in the very near future, as the swinging barometer would swing to only one side.  I can personally attest, “churches” are very very biased and will not help democrats (because, they morally support “control”).  I personally have witnessed churches helping those who are most “supportive” of their philosophy.  EXAMPLE: they are more likely to give money, a mortgage, a car payment, and money for the starving, if you follow their plans.  Indeed, if the churches were embracing the poor (AS AN EXAMPLE), then they would immediately open their doors 24/7 for ALL the people who are homeless and distraught.

ATTENTION: Most of the churches are Republican controled institutions.

You said, “You see, it’s nice that you want to take more of my money and be generous with it, forcing me to either give it to the government or charity. But I believe that’s also part my decision, wouldn’t you agree? Perhaps not.”

The problem Civiclesson, is that without a support of “taxes” at some level in the community, the balance of power changes to one bias or another, that then plays RIGHT into the hands of the Republicans, with their plan to take funds from the non-profit sector and give it ALL to the “Faith Based Organizations.”  This would complete the plan of the Bush Administration to take away the voice of more than half the country.

You said, “I may vote for or against C and D – I am undecided. But more money does not always make government better, and more government spending does not always help the economy.”

At the moment, we need more in taxes, because we have crippled the US economy with the removal of many good programs in the past several decades.  I don’t agree with social programs that are researching why a bug is a bug, but I do agree with C & D, because it will help our communities.  When we tax everyone, it is does not discriminate with an Liberal or Conservative … it borrows a philosophy about seeking a voice for EVERYONE …

If we continue to remove taxes, then the divide between the Liberal and Conservative views then becomes much greater, because we then play political football over who controls the voice of the majority and America  — no debate and no democratic consensus, and our country fails.

IF we continue on this track of not supporting taxes, removing responsible taxes, we will then force ourselves out-of-an-economic-balance, whereby, we send our economics into a death spiral.  The world has proven that a Republic does not work … the ROMAN EMPIRE FELL because of it.

  19. Goldwater,
You may think he’s representing you poorly, but don’t project your opinion on the rest of the populace.

Rose represents a very diverse district  – Montrose on one end of the spectrum and Telluride on the other.  That constituency necessarily demands a representative who tries to carefully weigh the pros and cons.

Unfortunately, the partisans are circling and they demand payment in blood for those who dare use higher brain functions instead of only with their limbic brain region.

  20. I waiting to hear why you appose this issue about a $30.00 refund check, or making a difference in your community.

First off, I’m only nominally Republican.  All my party loyalties are to the pre-McGovernite ethnic Democrats who have been marginalized since the cultural left took over the party.

It’s not so much that I want to keep a portion of my piffling income, as that I’m concerned that the referenda will just throw money at things.  A billion or so for road maintenance sounds reasonable, considering our state’s decrepit roads, but the rest of the proposals seem incredibly vague to one not so knowledgable to budget travails.

I’m not a fan of TABOR precisely because it requires every taxpayer/voter to research budget stuff.  That’s what my elected slaves are for.

  21. The TABOR rebate check is totally different from your state & federal refund checks. The last time anybody got a TABOR rebate check was in 2001. I think if people understood this FACT C&D would pass easily. But thanks to our friends at the Independence Institute with their lies and spin, people are confused. Gosh, Caldera can kiss my ass.

  22. Kareoke Hero –
Interesting, I didn’t know that particular piece of information about a TABOR refund vs. a regular tax refund.

Please elaborate.  I agree that the opponents of C & D are playing fast and loose with facts.

  23. Kareoke Hero –

Can you sing “Cry me a River?”

Lies and spin?  Every ad I’ve heard from the pro-side has said: “without a tax increase”.  When the governement keeps/spends more of my money then it did before it constitutes a tax increase.

  24. The TABOR surplus, meaning you will get a TABOR rebate check, resumes this year. The last time anybody got a TABOR refund check was before the recession in 2001. Over the next 5 years according to the non-partisan Office of Legislative Council, the TABOR rebate will bring the average taxpayer a total of $491. Or, about $98 per year.

So, I guess one could say that we could keep our $98 per year, “because we know how to spend our money better than the state government does”. & by that I mean, we could keep our $98 & watch our roads crumble, defund higher education, essentially eliminate the community college system. What would be the long run price of not funding higher education? An uneducated work force resulting in new business not moving to Colorado, & the outsourcing of many more. Tell me what kind of shape Colorado’s economy would be in at that point? This is not a crazy leftie view, this is the reality of voting no on C&D. SO DAMNIT, VOTE YES ON C&D.

  25. Start doing what Jesus told you to do … and, stop doing exactly the opposite of what the Minister, Priest, or who ever tells you to give to your community.

God only asks for a tenth of my money. On the other hand, the government asks for even more of the fruits of my labor than a feudal lord would’ve asked me for had I been a serf in the fields.

I’ll bet that ticks God off.

  26. The world has proven that a Republic does not work … the ROMAN EMPIRE FELL because of it.

Did you think about that before you wrote it? The Roman Republic fell because it was overthrown from within to create the Empire, despite being in spectacular form. The Empire fell because it was destroyed from without by the barbarians.

  27. “God only asks for a tenth of my money. On the other hand, the government asks for even more of the fruits of my labor than a feudal lord would’ve asked me for had I been a serf in the fields. I’ll bet that ticks God off.”

I bet it doesn’t tick God off. Does God build your roads? Would God want you to defund higher education? Would God be ticked off if you to invested $98 per year for the common good?

  28. Does God build your roads? Would God want you to defund higher education? Would God be ticked off if you to invested $98 per year for the common good?

Does God hang up strings of dildos like garland?

I was speaking a bit more generally than just C&D, and I can conclusively say I pay a whole heck of a lot more than $98 a year, and I pay it for some pretty idiotic things. It’d be an admirable goal to roll “Tax Freedom Day” back to about February 15th.

  29. BTW…

Is this why letters to congrescritters beginning “My Dear Elected Slave” are never answered?

Remember the George Carlin routine?”You’re a mail carrier?””Yeah.””So you’re a public servant?””Yeah?””Well, GET ME A GLASS OF WATER.”

  30. Aquaman –

Wow … your comment really shows how uneducated you are …

You said, “Did you think about that before you wrote it? The Roman Republic fell because it was overthrown from within to create the Empire, despite being in spectacular form. The Empire fell because it was destroyed from without by the barbarians.”

What you said is absolutely false.

The Roman Empire fell, because they could not outlast the continued attacks from invaders from outside their country, and they needed the help of their slaves to go to war against them.  The divide happened, because many of the ruling class did not want to “let go of their ego’s” … and, once they finally did, the slaves had very little armor to fight with … because, all of their wealth was not shared with the lower class.  Once the invaders noticed that the Romans were poorly prepared and outmatched, they took charge and the Roman Empire Fell.

Get you history right next time Aquaman.
