Florida Senate Seat Open in 2010

  • by: Colorado Pols

Democrats aren’t going to get to 60 Senate seats in 2009, but one potential pickup may have just become available for 2010.

From The Associated Press:

U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, who has struggled to boost his public support because of his close ties to President Bush, announced Tuesday he will not seek a second term in 2010, saying he wants to spend more time with his family.

The Republican pushed an immigration reform bill that was unpopular with many in his party, and his seat was widely seen as vulnerable in two years. However, Martinez rejected suggestions that he faced difficult a re-election. “My decision is not based on re-election prospects but on what on what I want to do with the next eight years of my life,” he said.

    1. Still hold Jeb in high esteem.  If he runs, it will do a lot to hold this seat for us.  Even if he doesn’t both sides have strong benches.  This should be a good race to watch

      1. Jeb Bush is still very popular among Floridians, especially Republicans. I read today that the Republican Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives (can’t recall his name) wants to run but he stated publicly yesterday that he will defer to Gov. Bush. If he decides to run, Gov. Bush will be very difficult to beat.

  1. She deserves another shot at it!

Seriously, I’d watch Jeb for the R’s…if he dosen’t run, then keep an eye on Rep. Adam Putnam and Charlie Crist—(Crist is no fan of Jeb’s so he might run even if Jeb is in).

For the D’s watch State CFO Adelaide “Alex” Sink (the only stewide eleced Democrat other than Senator Bill Nelson) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.  Apparently Sink had been planning to announce yesterday that she was not going to challenge Martinez when the news hit that he was not running for reelection….she cancelled the announcement and is reconsidering.
