The powerlessness of liberal bloggers

  • by: DavidThi808

Well some like to tell us that we liberals have little influence on Obama.

Yet over on HuffPo we have this report

Brennan Pulls Out Of Running For CIA Chief, Blames Liberal Blogs

Brennan wrote in a Nov. 25 letter to Obama that he did not want to be a distraction. His potential appointment has raised a firestorm in liberal blogs that associate him with the Bush administration’s interrogation, detention and rendition policies.

I’d say that while we bloggers do not have a veto on Obama’s actions, we do exert some influence. And that’s how it should be – that all of us have a little bit of influence.

    1. But he did it in response to a rather vociferous protest from many fronts, and led by the blogs.

The blogs aren’t policy-makers on their own, but they make enough noise now that they can kindle a major investigation or prompt discussions on policy matters.

      1. And I imagine Obama would have tried to convince him to stay if he thought it would be politically beneficial for him to do so.

I do like the speed with which the blogs can react to events, and likewise the ramifications of a watchful and vocal citizenry.

    1. Eventually they’re going to be right about something that they’re angry about.

If an infinite number of bloggers sat at an infinite number of computers, eventually they would fix one or two problems.

    2. that the blogosphere provides an avenue for ideas/suggestions/counter-arguments/etc to be presented. But it requires that the make sense, are compelling, and resonate – for them to have effect.

But that is a giant difference from before when no matter how compelling an idea was, you had no way to get it out there.

And we liberals always win in the long term. Ending slavery, giving women the vote, etc – all ideas that originally were left-wing nut ideas that slowly became acceptable, and then became the norm. We see the same thing happening with gay marriage.
