Peggy Lamm Comeback?

  • by: Colorado Pols

Democrat Peggy Lamm seems to have gotten her fundraising house in order with the help of fundraising consultant Hollie Velasquez, and she now expects to raise at least as much as Democratic frontrunner Ed Perlmutter this quarter.

Of course, Lamm famously boasted that she would seriously outraise Perlmutter in Q2 before being embarassed when the checks were counted, but insiders within Lamm’s camp say that the fundraising strength is real this time. We’ll add this to the believe it when we see it category.

  1. Peggy Lamm is related to Former Governor Dick Lamm.  I don’t think you can suggest that Peggy is not Democratic, however, she may be more moderate in her views.  She certainly is a better choice than ANY Republican candidate.

  2. Peter-

Didn’t you ever read one of Lamm’s op-ed pieces when she wrote for the Denver Post?  She’s very liberal.  What have you been smoking?

  3. Moderate doesn’t cover it.  This woman supported Bill Owens for Governor – period.  The cost to Coloradans of another 4 years of an Owens Governorship is immeasurable. She does not deserve to be nominated as a Democrat for anything.

She can deny or try to lie her way out of her actions, but the fact is: she supported Owens; allowed her name to be used publically as a supporter of Owens; and did nothing to remove her name from a supporter list of Owens supporters at the time it was used during the election.

She is not a Democrat and it is no surprise that she would not use the word on her website.

Her recent denials of her position in the governor’s race is akin to the “The Dog ate my homework” excuse.

Maybe she can get Ken Chlouber to support her.  She can ride around on the handle bars of his motorcycle as she did when they were an item (wearing matching cowboy shirts) at the legislature.  I’m sure that will go over well with Emily’s List.

  4. Pat Robertson pretty-much sealed the fate of many Republicans around the country.

I can’t wait to see the polls fall after this latest retreat by the Republcans, showing their true colors.  I will only vote for Democrats, because they reflect the idealisms of Jesus Christ.

  5. This race just got a hell of alot more interesting now that Hollie has signed up w/ Peggy’s camp. Holly is hands down probably the best Dem. fundraiser in the state.

  6. I prefer Perlmutter for our nominee in the 7th, but to imply that Peggy Lamm’s endorsement of Bill Owens got us 4 more years of Bill Owens is simply stupid.  Owens was going to win (and win big I might add) in ’02 with or without Lamm’s endorsement.  The Democrat’s problem in ’02 was not Lamm, it wasn’t even Heath–it was that Owens was unstoppable.  Udall could not have stopped him; Salazar could not have stopped him.

I will agree that Lamm’s skirting the issue at this point is rather dumb.  She’d be better off to come out and say what I just said.  At least she’d appear principled…

As to her dating Ken Chlober.  If she’s to be linked to a Republican, at least it is of the Chlober variety and not the Andrews variety.  I actually like Ken Chlober–for a Republican he’s not bad…

  7. Don’t be surprised if Tom Tancredo comes out and supports her. Especially since her and her husband are active in the anti-illegal immigration movement.

  8. Just to set the record straight, Katy, the liberal Lamm who used to write for The Denver Post was Dottie, wife of former Gov. Dick Lamm.  Peggy Lamm is Dick’s ex-sister in-law, she married  Dick’s brother, Tom Lamm.  Her record in the legislature was that of a moderate Democrat.  but she voted in favor of the law allowing citizens who pass a background check and handgun safety course to get a permit to carry a concealed gun.

  9. Ah, there goes Jason again; helping out his buddy Ed.  At least this time he got smart and made it look like a positive post about Lamm; all he is really doing is setting expectations high for Peggy.  Just like last quarter when he lied by saying Peggy was telling people she would out-rasie Ed, which she never said.

Until and if EMILY does a mailing, which won’t happen for months, Ed will raise more money than Peggy.  The question is, can she raise enough to keep competitive until then?

  10. Now I can never keep this one strait… Which was the kooky Lamm who had all the cats that got taken away? Was that Dottie or Peggy?

And keep going Peter, you’re doing great on this thread tough guy!

  11. Voyageur…

It does raise an interesting point though, how many people in the 7th District are going to vote or not vote for Peggy thinking that she is in fact Dottie? Kind of sad.

  12. CD7 has many new people, and Dick Lamm hasn’t been gov for a very long time.  The most common question from those who remember Dick is; “is she related to him?”  Frequently guessed as his daughter when told she is related.  And Dottie is almost completely forgotten by the general public.

  13. QL, you have a good point about many voting for or against Peggy because they think she’s Dottie.  Tancredo’s post is an example, when he says Peggy and her husband are anti-immigration.  That’s DICK Lamm who is stridently anti-immigrant, Peggy is not his wife.  Indeed, she’s not even his sister in law anymore, appaently she and Tom Lamm got a divorce. As to Dottie Lamm being anti-immigrant, I’ve never seen that.
There was a joke going around during Vietnam that the ideal presidential ticket would be Wallace and McCarthy.  The liberals would think it was Henry and Gene while the right would think it was George and Joe.  Probably not enough remember lefty former VP and 1948 Progressive party presidential candidate Henry Wallace to make the joke work today.

  14. I don’t know of either Lamm having too many cats, as Iron Mike suggests.  I think he is thinking of LuAnne Strickland, wife of the former Senate president, gubernatorial candidate and Adams County Commissioner.

  15. I don’t know of either Lamm having too many cats, as Iron Mike suggests.  I think he is thinking of LuAnne Strickland, wife of the former Senate president, gubernatorial candidate and Adams County Commissioner.

  16. This is a very interesting story, it provides evidence that the “Holy Spirit” does not enter the baby until much later in the Pregnancy, and this confirms my viewpoints.  BUSH is just simply WRONG AGAIN about STEM CELL RESEARCH !!!  🙂

CHICAGO Aug 23, 2005 ? A review of medical evidence has found that fetuses likely don’t feel pain until the final months of pregnancy, a powerful challenge to abortion opponents who hope that discussions about fetal pain will make women think twice about ending pregnancies.

  17. When it comes to CD7, my attitude is “anyone but Ed”. He has the audacity to question Peggy’s Dem credentials when he was far more likely to vote against Dem. ideals such as non discrimination and labor issues when he was in the legislature.

Perlmutter is also largely the reason the Kerry campaign never got anywhere in this state in 2004. I have been saying ever since that George Bush did not win that election, John Kerry lost it. There were many, many people in this state who wanted to seriously campaign for John Kerry, but they met a huge brick wall in the person of Ed Perlmutter. Any effort to do more than he was willing to do (which was very little) was quickly squashed by him through intimidation.

Even I attempted to organize the people who wanted to win the election but was faced with threats of law suits from Perlmutter, who also tried to bad mouth me with lies to the Dem organization in Denver. Luckily or me, they knew me well enough to know to take Ed with a grain of salt.

So it with no reservations I say GO PEGGY GO!!!!! I can;’t afford much in campaign contributions, but I intend to give her the max allowed by law.

  18. Oh so you are THAT Dan Willis…The one that was having Kerry contributions sent to your home and unofficially using the Kerry logo on your short lived website to do so….  Very illegal….I do believe that it was the National Kerry organization that shut you down…NOT Ed Perlmutter!!!!! You are lucky you are not wearing a nice starched striped suit provided by the Fed’s..  This is what cost you your credibility with the state party.  Own your own mistake Pal!!!!!

  19. Hey Dan,

What labor organization do you belong to?  Ed already has the UNANIMOUS endorsement of the SEIU and UFCW and the Teamsters.  We’re a year and two months away and he’s already received their nods. What we don’t need in this going to be close race is a spoiler, especially one who doesn’t even know the district.

  21. Two good Democrats in Congressional District 7.
    Both admirable people.
    For State Treasurer no one.
    For Attorney General no one
For Secretary of State no one, except maybe that Munchkin Moron Rep. Fran Coleman.
Perhaps someone ought to swallow some pride and seek statewide office. Pay is not as good but the commute is better

  22. Got to ask!!!!  Where were the real Peggy supporters in April, May and June???? ( beside contributions from family, co-workers, more family, and co-workers families, didn’t see too many CD7 families) Is the public to believe that Ms. EX-SISTER-IN-LAW has made SUCH an impression in July and August that CD7 voters are throwing money at her for her “new found” leadership skills. (or perhaps, she has found more family to tap) SORRY, I don’t buy it. Ms. EX-SISTER-IN-LAW supported Lock-Step Bill and had a hand in getting him elected with his dismal record on women’s issues, Ms. EX-SISTER-IN-LAW responded to her support with the standard Republican response of DENIAL, DENIAL, DENIAL (only to be found out) BOOT HER BACK TO SUPERIOR. Sorry Superior, no offense.

  23. Jason,

After Ed fed you that rumor about fundraising boasts in Q2 did you ever call Peggy’s campaign for confirmation or at least comment.  Oh no, you were too busy showing Ed around and trying to get a job on his campaign.

Peggy is in Washington right now with the 10 most promising women candidates nationwide at the invitation of EMILY’s list.

What are these definitions?  “a despoiler”?  Were Ed’s people the same ones who gave Betsy H. the great advice on Chaucer and the the c word?

  24. Why do you want to know about me and Dan, portvueboy?  Do you like me (check yes or no)?  Meet me outside homeroom.

P.S.  Do you like to spoon?

  25. Once again..FUNK & WAGNELLS.  Look it up  “despoiler” under “spoiler” OR look up “despoil” to strip or deprive of something by or as by force; plunder….your lesson for The night cotopaxi  You represent a SPOILER

  26. despoiler AND plunder…Definitely work those gems into your talking points.  No, really, you don’t look out of touch at all.

    What’s next booty (tee hee)?

  27. Two good candidates in Congressional District Number Seven.
    No candidate for State Treasurer
No candidate for Secretary of State
    No candidate for Attorney General.
There seems to be a problem here.Peggy or Ed need to do the right thing for the Democratic Party. Holding statewide office is a better deal anyway. Less pay but a better commute

  28. Portvueboy…The national Kerry campaign only gave us (Colorado Votes Kerry) options how to proceed in our efforts to help get done some jobs the campaign (under Ed’s leadership) was not getting done.

Ed was the one that made it too difficult using the same type of techniques he now uses against Peggy Lamm regarding the Emily’s List folks.

That is why I left the Kerry and effort and decided to work for a campaign that WANTED to win: the House Majority Project (ahem, and we went from a 31-34 minority to a 35-30 majority).

BTW, the limited funds we did raise for Colorado Votes Kerry were contributed to the State Dems to be used in their efforts to coordinate with Vcitory 2004.

  29. Do you really thing that rank-and-file voters are impressed with UFCW, SEIU, Teamsters, endorsing Perlmutter?  Sure it gets him money, and press.  But it can lose the support of rank-and-file union members who already think the unions are too political now.  It?s a long time before the primaries.  Why jump at one pretty face (Sorry, Peggy) so early and just confirm the public?s view of unions?  Didn?t they learn anything out of the last AFL-CIO convention?

  30. I have to say I am a little surprised (and concerned) about two pretty major unions endorsing Perlmutter. He was not exactly a friend to labor in the legislature.

  31. The real issue for Lamm in the Dem primary (if she gets that far), is indeed her last name.  But it is not confusion as to whether she is Dottie or not, it is the highly negative perception of that name by hispanic voters.  And in the 7th CD, they are a significant part of a Democratic primary.

Dottie Lamm faced the same problem when she ran for the Senate.  While she beat Gil Romero in the primary, she could not get support from hispanic voters in the general.  They either didn’t vote or voted for Campbell.  All she had was the elite, mostly white dem base and against someone like Campbell that clearly wasn’t going to get the job done.

I am not suggesting that even with enthusiastic Hispanic vote support she could have beaten Campbell, I am only pointing out that to win a dem primary in the 7th, the Hispanic vote will likely determine the outcome.  Fairly or unfairly, rightly or wrongly, I don’t think that vote will go for someone named Lamm.  The fact that she is not even related to Dick Lamm anymore doesn’t change anything.  That name prompts powerful negative reactions among a large segment of Hispanic voters.

  32. Democrats really need to get serious.
One (1) uno Republican candidate for Seventh Congressional District
Two (2) dos Democratic candidates for that District.
No candidates for any Statewide Office except Governor on the Democratic Side. Republican candidates already lined up for every Statewide Office.
Why does not Patty Waak or Senator Salazar or both step in to talk Ed Perlmutter or Peggy Lamm into running for say Secretary of State or Treasurer. Or in Ed’s case Attorney General.

  33. fishysmellindems – Because their talent pool is too shallow. They knew this when they brought in all those Sierra Club employees to work as LAs under the Golden Dome.
They are a party guided by ego and not the common good and they are fractured right down the middle. BTC hippies are on one side, smug that they won leadership of the party and the limo liberals are on the other, sitting on their cash until BTC promises to play nice. In the mean time they are ignoring a lot of talented kids, the next generation, because they don’t have the money to fit into one faction, or the “hippy street cred” to fit into the other.

  34. because there are no major dem candidates running for statewide office and the GOP has candidates lined up in every race accross the board the Dems are going to get creamed because a futile attempt to fill those slots with mediocre candidates has disaster written all over it.

Pat Waak better pull her head out and get the party organized soon or all the progress that the dems made in 2004 will be a very short lived dream

  35. I agree with you the way you view the issue. I remember Jack London once said everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has positive side. It is also interesting to see different viewpoints & learn useful things in the discussion.

  36. I am curious about the contention that having the same last name as a well known immigration restriction advocate like Dick Lamm is a negative factor in winning the votes of Latinos in the 7th district.

There has been a great deal of commentary by political analysts these days that calls into question the notion that Latino Americans on the whole strongly favor permissive immigration policies.  In fact, there is considerable evidence that calls that notion into question.  In my upcoming book “Immigration Politics”, I have a chapter devoted to that topic titled “The Myth of the Latino Vote”.

Despite that, I do acknowledge that in some cases there may be some validity to that theory.  In particular, I believe that in cases where the media are able to create a public perception that a candidate or ballot initiative whose focus is restrictive policy on illegal immigration is “anti Latino”, then I do believe the candidat or ballot measure may lose support of Latinos.  In my view that certainly happened in the case of California’s Proposition 187, in which exit poll estimates indicated only 20-30 percent or so of Latino voters supported it.  In contrast, Arizona’s Proposition 200, despite a fierce race-baiting effort by the media and political establishment, won 47% of the Latino vote according to the CNN exit poll.

Arizona Latinos are probably a bit more conservative than Colorado 7th district Latinos, but I would guess that there would still be a sold 40% of the Latino population in that district that would be supportive of a pro-borders candidate.

However, that assumes that open borders advocates have not been successful in creating a public perception of Dick Lamm as “anti-Latino”.  Not being a Coloradan, I can’t speak to that one.

Clearly some people seem to feel that such an image has been created, although to judge for myself I would have to decide whether that was an objective assessment or simply the wishful thinking of partisan leftists.
