Colorado Voting Problems

Welcome to Battleground Statehood.  You are now a prime target for being misled, disenfranchised, or hacked.

I figured we should probably have a diary for various reports of election mayhem, since it’s bound to happen.

Update:

For anyone who would like to report elections problems, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE, 1-888-Ve-Y-Vota, or go over to www.OurVoteLive.org, a service set up by the Electronic Frontier Foundation for the non-partisan Election Protection Coalition.

  1. There are reports trickling in over at Daily Kos of some “interesting” shenanigans going on in El Paso County.

First, the local news is reporting that robocalls are going out to Democrats giving them incorrect information about polling locations.

Next, there are reports of Democratic poll watchers in the Security and Falcon area receiving calls telling them they aren’t needed tomorrow.

Finally, a report that Republicans showed up at a Democratic staging location to pick up Democratic poll watcher credentials.  The group was apparently recognized before they received the creds.

To me, this sounds like the El Paso Democrats and the Obama campaign should expect some serious attempts at baseless voter challenges tomorrow at El Paso voting locations.

    1. The Obama campaign has a deployable ARMY of lawyers and investigators in this state for just this reason. And the fact that everyone ever contacted by the Obama campaign got a doorhanger with their polling place and a toll-free number to call if they had any questions (or needed a ride), this won’t work.

If anything, they just might get some hard evidence to tie it to the Colorado GOP, and force DickWad Hams to flee the state like the thief he is….

      1. Voting shenanigans, from disenfranchisment to election day tricks is 99% Republican.

Karl Rove.  Lee Atwater.  Katherine Harris.  Kevin (??) Black.  Where is the Democratic equivalent?

          1. Yes, Dems have had their moments in the shade with “machine” politics.  But none have ever been on the scale of, with the audacity of, with the distortion of outcome, as the Republicans.

            1. Obama has been no stranger to the “dirty” (I guess you could call it dirty, it’s basically just smart) politics of Chicago.

When he was running for his state senate seat, he had all of his opponents’ signatures for candidacy checked against the registered voter logs. By the time it was through, he was the only candidate left who had enough valid signatures. He then won because he was unopposed.

                1. Another funny thing about that Illinois State Senate race is that Mike Ditka was mulling a run on the GOP side, but ultimately decided against it.

Nobody in their right mind thinks Chicago is going to vote against Iron Mike. Obama dodged more than a few close calls.

            2. I never meant this to be a partisan thread, nor is election fraud forgivable from any party or person.  And thank everyone for keeping the out-of-state discussion in the meta-thread.

Philadelphia is in a strong position to manipulate Pennsylvania elections, and I don’t believe Democrats need to resort to crappy practices like the one described in order to make a clean sweep of elections there.  It’s just power for power’s sake.

          1. St. Louis was reporting a lot of police presence in the downtown polling locations this morning.

Some people in this country apparently don’t get the purpose of elections – to have every citizen’s voice heard in deciding who will represent them.

              1. and WTF is his authority to ask for the guys ID ?  Is he hired security, or just thought someone needed him there ?  I agree with you LB – that’s just plain ridiculous.

      2. Unfortunately, it’s also no more (nor less) than I would expect from the Philly machine.  There’s a serious entrenched party machine there; Progressive Democrats like blogger Chris Bowers are attempting to take over the party structure, but it takes a lot of time and effort because the structure is designed to lock in machine candidates.

  2. For anyone who would like to report elections problems, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE, 1-888-Ve-Y-Vota, or go over to http://www.OurVoteLive.org, a service set up by the Electronic Frontier Foundation for the Election Protection Coalition.

If you are an Obama supporter, the Obama campaign has also set up election protection resources; contact the campaign offices or go online to Obama’s website.

  3. I’ve already mail voted, so this was just research.

The Mennonite Church is the place for two precincts. There was no line outside of the building and there couldn’t be more than 40 feet inside the building due to the layout.

    No problemo at this hour.

    1. You’re our representative in the Belly of the Beast.  If Obama wins Florida and with it the White House, I’ll buy you a (union-brewed) beer!

  4. NYTimes blog report that Weld County did not print Spanish language instructions and significantly under-staffed their polling stations with interpreters (only 5 of eleven stations).

Steve Moreno, the Weld County Clerk and Recorder, based his decision not to print Spanish language instructions on a 2000 census figure that placed Spanish-speaking citizens at less than 5% of the population, rather than the most recent Federal data which puts the Hispanic population of Weld County at a much higher 27%.

The report goes on to say that Spanish-speaking voters are turning away from some polling places due to the shortcoming.

      1. Call me crazy, but I wouldn’t necessarily agree that 95% of what is on the ballot this year (i.e. the Initiatives and Ballot Issues) qualify as being written in “English.”  Hell, I’m a lawyer and it takes me a while to barely understand what they say.

      2. There are in fact some people in this state who have a longer tradition of speaking Spanish than there have been English speakers in the state.

Also, the citizenship test doesn’t really test English proficiency.  Voting instructions (and understanding the ballot initiatives) are more complex.

        1. questions and put together a sentence, any sentence.  And that’s only if you’re young.  Over 50, maybe 55, you don’t have to show any proficiency.

Besides, I don’t like the idea that you have to speak a certain way to vote.  A violation of the 1st to use the 1st.

          1. If I had to vote in Spanish and I didn’t do my homework on any of the ballots i’d be there a damn long time.  I spent an hour on my mail in ballot at my desk.

            1. I’d be there forever.

Speaking of forever, that’s how long it took for ballot to get to me.  By that time I was firmly set on everything, it took 30 seconds to draw my lines.

  5. from the Boulder Daily Camera

Kim Saporito is glad she brought her book to polling place 133 at the Boulder Masonic Lodge. Not because she anticipated waiting in a long line to vote — or that she even expected a long line to form.

Saporito is an election worker, and there are so few people trickling in to vote, she’s glad she has something to distract her from the boredom.

    1. I heard that there was a drunk guy wondering around there, yelling at people and wouldn’t leave.  I didn’t hear it from anywhere reliable, so I’m just curious if it’s the same.
