Rahm Emanuel: Obama's Chief of Staff?

I’m not one to count my chickens before they hatch, but if the AP is willing to do it for me, then yippie!

ASHINGTON – Barack Obama’s campaign has approached Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel about possibly serving as White House chief of staff, officials said Thursday as the marathon presidential race entered its final, frenzied stretch with a Democratic tilt.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…

Good?  Bad?  Chief of what?  The official Pols/Dabee47 “Poll of Polls” follows.  🙂

The good side:

Emanuel is a veteran of President Clinton’s White House, and has made a rapid ascent of the House leadership ladder since his election to Congress. He was chairman of the Democratic campaign committee two years ago when the party won a majority for the first time in more than a decade, and he cemented his reputation as a prodigious fundraiser and strong-willed political strategist.

The bad side:

Even so, Republicans seized on the disclosure. “Emanuel is among the most vitriolic and partisan people in American politics,” said Alex Conant, a Republican National Committee spokesman. “Reports that Obama wants him to be White House chief of staff undercut any claims to unity and bipartisanship, and should alarm every voter.”

So, would Rahm be a good fit as CoS?  Would his kick-ass, take no prisoners brand of Chicago politics sit well in the White House or actually hurt El Presidente Obama?  Is their a better option?  **Hint: Tom Daschle**

Is Rahm the man for the job?

  1. The president needs a Chief of Staff who can be utterly practical and gets things done. That’s Rahm.

Obama’s job is to bring people together, lead, find compromises, and to a large degree – agree with everyone. He then needs a Chief of Staff who takes all that and makes the decisions that upset many, which is necessary to actually accomplishing things.

  2. I think if the Dems win big it would almost assure Reid and Pelosi stay in their leadership positions.

I would love to see Rahm as speaker though. He would be the highest ranking Jewish government official ever.

    1. You’re right, Nancy’s not going anywhere. But, maybe 4 or 6 years from now Dems will need someone to step up to Speaker or Majority (or Minority) Leader.  I think he’d be great there…but if he goes into an Obama Admin, that’ll never happen.

Also, if, god forbid, dems ever lose the presidency (snark alert), a strong Speaker like Rahm could be our version Newt  🙂

      1. but Senate leaders just don’t get booted…especially after what is shaping up to be a successful election.  Plus, I don’t see anyone lining up the 29 or 30 anti-Reid votes they’d need to oust him.  Durbin’s not going to do it, Reid supported him as Senate #2.  Hillary would be good, but I doubt she’d make a move to oust him.  That’s really what it comes down to: who’s going to push for him to be replaced?

Somewhat ironically, it actually might help him get reelected in 2010 if he’s not the Dem leader…

  3. But it would create a power shift in the House, and that could be a good thing (or a bad thing…).  Chief of Staff is something Rahm would be good at.  Sure, he’s partisan, but compared to some CoS appointees he’s not way out-of-line.  But in the end, he can get things done and he can actually work with both sides of the aisle.

I think a lot of people were putting Durbin or Daschle (?) in that slot, but Rep. Emanuel’s got the chops for the spot, too.
