Is the Colorado Republican Party Broke?

  • by: Colorado Pols

We mean financially, not metaphorically. According to news out of California:

The California Republican Party is sending $3 million to neighboring states of Nevada and Colorado to help in last minute get out the vote efforts in the critical battlegrounds. That’s $2 million to Colorado and $1 million to Nevada, we’re told.[Pols emphasis]

The latest polls from RealClearPolitics.com show Democratic Sen. Barack Obama holding a lead in both states, ahead in Colorado by an average 5.4 percentage points, and leading in Nevada by an average of 3.3 percentage points.

Here’s the official statement from the state GOP:

The California Republican Party’s aggressive fundraising and campaign programs continue to have a major national role in this critical election year. Since February 2007, the CRP has raised over $36 million for the programs that are working to benefit all of our candidates, from John McCain and Sarah Palin to our Congressional, legislative and local candidates.

Our revitalized donor programs have demonstrated enormous success and have been embraced by the Republican donor community. Our Team California major donor program together with our joint fundraising agreement with the RNC have generated the funds to implement the entire California Victory 2008 program, support party operations, and generated an additional $3 million in support for the Western battleground states of Nevada and Colorado.

Remember, the state GOP began the year in debt. Will they end the year in the same position?

  1. But, Californians know that McCain has no hope there and that they won’t elect a Californian Republican to the U.S. Senate this year.  Best case scenario polls (Californians presumably don’t read the Rocky Mountain News) look better in Colorado and Nevada.

  2. When asked on one occassion what was the primary cause of military defeats he remarked: “The history of defeats can be summed up in two words ‘too late.'” Sending $2 million to Colorado for the GOTV is ‘too late.’ An effective GOTV campaign takes months to organize and coordinate. Without the foot soldiers to execute the plan, money is meaninigless and it takes money early to fund the organizational efforts.

An example of this is Senator Obama’s organization. Last Saturday 843 volunteers spread out over Larimer and Weld counties (Ft. Collins, Loveland & Greeley) and knocked on over 40,000 doors. The Senator’s campaign has been working all year to organize this kind of effort.

The $2 million from California appears to be more an act of desperation than a real GOTV program.

  3. CA repubs have a number of contested assembly and state senate seats that could give dems a 2/3 majority…thus letting them pass the budget and tax changes w/o opposition…

    1. Only if the Democrats win six of the seven competitive State Assembly races this cycle and pull off something impossible and get two more seats in the California Senate when only one of the seats is considered a competitive race.

The Republicans could end up with a thin margin to keep doing their drown California government in a bathtub trick, but they’ll be able to keep doing it for at least another two years.

  4. I’ve volunteered, been paid, and am friendly towards people who knock my door to talk about the politics of the day. I think Colorado is becoming a poster child for what a grass roots campaign can do; however, we never see Trailhead or a GOP canindate with ground troops out knocking doors. Is it because anyone who votes republican wear shoes not fit for the streets? It doesn’t seem to me to matter how much money gets poured into our state as this point, I don’t think the Republicans ever had a plan to turn dollars into votes. So where is the money going?

  5. giving away his season tickets because the Raiders keep losing at home. Either way, when you have a losing team, it does not matter who holds the tickets.
