Canvassing for Amendment 59 with the Speaker

Our talk about politics can be really cyclical sometimes, especially about Colorado’s ballot this year…

Yeah, the ballot’s long. Yeah, we’ve talked about all of the issues over and over again. Yeah, Libertad hates unions. Blah, blah, blah…

But sometimes it’s important to remember how ridiculously hard some of the people of Colorado are working to fix our state. I realized that again today while talking to Andrew Romanoff.

Andrew and Cary Kennedy have been tireless advocates for Amendment 59, consistently arguing its merits in every conversation they have with the media, other lawmakers, the general public (and in one case in Summit County this weekend, a poor 16-year-old girl who couldn’t vote yet).

But they’re not just talk. This morning, my organization (the Colorado Center on Law and Policy) organized what was supposed to be a relatively small literature drop, hitting 10 precincts in Denver with a quick message about supporting A-59. It hit all the normal points: creates a needed savings account for education, helps repair the fiscal knot, doesn’t raise taxes, etc.

Well, after sending out our volunteers, Speaker Romanoff came by and asked how much literature we had left. I told him about 500 pieces, and he asked if he could have it all. He said he was antsy, and needed to get out and talk to voters. He does this everyday, multiple times a day, but still didn’t think he was doing enough. It reminded me that there are still some public servants who take their positions so seriously, and believe in what they’re doing so vehemently, that they’ll work themselves into such a fervor that they always WANT to do more.

I’ve said it a lot over the past months, but A-59 is the most important ballot issue we’re voting on this election. We haven’t had such a chance to fix our constitutional mess in years. I really think it’s going to pass, as long as we keep working. So take it from Andrew, and get out and talk to people over the next 11 days so they know just how important this fight is.

With 11 days to go, do you think Amendment 59 will pass?
