Religious Right Outraged By Musgrave's Abandonment

  • by: Colorado Pols

The Fort Collins Coloradoan’s Bob Moore blogs:

The Family Research Council Action Political Action Committee is protesting the National Republican Congressional Committee’s decision Wednesday to cancel $400,000 of advertising it had planned over the last week of Rep. Marilyn Musgrave’s re-election campaign. The FRC accuses the NRCC of “abandoning social conservative candidates” after it scaled back spending plans for Musgrave and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn.

Here’s the letter from FRC Action PAC President Tony Perkins to Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, chair of the NRCC:

“You have made a grave error in judgment by pulling your funds from the Michelle Bachmann race in Minnesota and the Marilyn Musgrave race in Colorado.

“The left is attacking both of these outstanding women because they are true conservatives. They vote pro-life and pro-family. Both Congresswomen are against taxpayer funding of abortion. Both oppose embryonic stem cell research, and both are for a Marriage Protection Amendment. These are issues that motivate voters. These are issues they and other conservative candidates have won and can win with.

“Reps. Bachmann and Musgrave are both in winnable districts. Pulling funds from their campaigns sends the wrong message to their supporters and gives their opponents a chance to produce headlines that the NRCC has undermined these campaigns. It appears that the NRCC is abandoning social conservative candidates and the issues for which they stand, particularly if they are championed by some of the most promising female legislators in the Congress. This is no time to cut and run from a fight.

“I will urge supporters of the FRC Action PAC to stop giving to the NRCC until it starts supporting and fighting for conservative candidates in close races. [Pols emphasis]

“My supporters and I urge you to reconsider these decisions.”

What the Family Resource Council doesn’t understand–is probably incapable of understanding–is the issues they cite in defense of Musgrave are exactly what have made her toxic. And the NRCC, unlike the religious right, is not deluded by self-righteous conviction.

  1. Both oppose embryonic stem cell research, and both are for a Marriage Protection Amendment. These are issues that motivate voters.

I’m sitting here waiting in fear for the stock market to open and my 401k to drop yet another 10 or 20 percent. Stem cell research and whether gays want to get hitched are about the LAST things I care about.

    1. When considering “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” the support of basic and applied research and providing that others can establish long-term relationships with the partner of their choice are actions that directly ensure these inalienable rights.

Whether or not you gained or lost a few thousand imaginary dollars is only tangentially (at best) related to ensuring these rights.

Sadly, we are encouraged to consider our pocketbook before considering our common rights.

The Queen is dead. Long live the Queen.

  2. “What the Family Resource Council doesn’t understand–is probably incapable of understanding–is the issues they cite in defense of Musgrave are exactly what has made her toxic.”

  3. Pulling their funding doesn’t have to do with their stances per sey, it has to do more with limited resources and not wanting to foot the bill for people who have made things harder for themselves.

A good example of this is Democrat John Murtha.  His “red-neck and racist” comment has been the sole reason he is now in a competitive race (his challenger has raised 2.5 million since Murtha’s comment).  But the Democrats have a million to spare to protect an incumbent who made a mess in their own bed.

We don’t.  If we were flush with cash, we could probably stand to protect our own gaffe prone elected officials.  But on a shoe string budget, they can’t expect to be bailed out.

Sorry Marilyn.  I hope you survive your challenge and if you do you’ll get all of the credit.

    1. I think Musgrave, Bachmann, & Murtha didn’t mistakenly say something they don’t believe – what all 3 did was say something they do believe. That’s what makes it hurt them so bad – that people see this as a true picture of the candidate, and it is.

And in the case of Musgrave it’s not any single thing she’s said, it’s what she has said and done over her whole time in Congress.

I think you Republicans need to face up to the fact that most voters are not interested in what Musgrave & Bachmann are selling. You might like it, but most don’t.

If you guys try to come back with more Musgraves & Bachmanns in ’10, it’s not going to sell.

And yes, we Dems need to consider replacing Murtha in ’10. The guy does some good things but he also concentrates on bringing home pork for his district and that is not what the country needs in a leadership position.

      1. I used the phrase “gaffe” just because I wanted to cut them a little bit of slack.  Campaigning is hard.  People shoot off their mouths after months of staying on message because they can get tired of saying the same thing over and over again.  That’s isn’t to say that I agree with Murtha or Bachmann, but I can emphathize a little with the pressure they have to be under.

Having said that, they probably need to go, but it’s up to the voters in their district.  Do they want to be represented by someone who calls them a racist?  Or wants to revive McCarthyism?

Aside from that, I do agree with your prediction.  Like them or not, it’s probably going to be a while before the Musgraves, Murthas, and Bachmanns are successful in selling themselves.

  4. should show their displeasure known by staying home from the polls on November 4th or going to the polls but turning in blank ballots!

“Values Voters” register your anger by not voting!  Show the Republican leadership in Washington that they should not take you for granted!

  5.    IIRC, after the very expensive, close-call Musty had running against Angie in ’06, the folks over at the NRCC suggested that she look for another line of work prior to the ’08 election because they weren’t going to pump a lot of $$$ into saving her derriere yet again.

So it should come as no surprise that the NRCC has finally pulled the plug on a wing nut who’s been on electoral life support for the past two year.

  6. “What the Family Resource Council doesn’t understand–is probably incapable of understanding–is the issues they cite in defense of Musgrave are exactly what have made her toxic. And the NRCC, unlike the religious right, is not deluded by self-righteous conviction.”

This is balderdash. Most Americans still think same-sex marriage is an idiotic idea, and those who support it generally aren’t fanatical enough about it to blackball an opponent. ESCR isn’t as big a deal for people who support it as it is for those who oppose it.

And slamming the “religious right” for self-righteous conviction but depicting the NRC as moderate and unzealous…

Come on. This is the party leadership that self-righteously went into war in Iraq, at the urging of the hawks.

Social conservatives are among the least discredited of the Republican factions after the Bush presidency. Their errors were in uncritically backing their party allies in ludicrously damaging foreign misadventures and fiscal irresponsibility.

    1. that social cons are going to oppose the war now?

BTW, keep dreaming your anti gay marriage dream… Most Americans in the 50s thought keeping the races separated was a good idea.

      1. I kept running into this

An August 2008 poll from TIME Magazine shows that 58 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. Constitution should not be amended to define marriage as being between one man and one woman.

Anybody that doesn’t believe should read stories on Prop. 8, it comes up constantly.
