1848 – Florida Becomes a state. Taylor wins FL and PA, and the election.
1852 – Pierce wins all three in a blowout.
1856 – Buchanan Wins FL and PA, wins the election.
1876 – Tilden gets 51% of the popular vote, but Hayes wins because he gets the trifecta. Florida was only 4 votes then, but Hayes only won by one electoral vote.
1884 and 1892 – Cleveland loses Ohio and Penn, but wins the election. One of only two candidates to win just one of the three and attain the presidency. He just happened to do it twice. Non-consecutively.
1960 – Kennedy wins in one of the closest elections (popular vote-wise) in US history. He loses Ohio and Florida, but takes the Keystone State.
It’s looking more and more like this election may come down to who can take two of the three. That is, of course, if the race in states like NC, MO, ND and MT start to tighten. McCain needs a miracle, but it’s not impossible. He can afford to lose New Mexico, Colorado and Iowa, but those are the only red states he can let turn blue.
