        1. Poison scene.  My enemy wants me to pick McCain, so I pick Obama.  But my enemy knows that I will do the opposite of what it recommends, so it recommends McCain so that I will pick Obama, so I pick McCain.  But my enemy knows that I know that it knows that I will do the opposite of what it recommends, so it recomends McCain so that I will pick Obama, so I pick McCain.  “I am just getting started.”

  1. Much like the Russian Army retreating toward Moscow, the Republican Party seems bent on destroying any connections with the moderate electorate of America. They’ve certainly decided to napalm any connections to the Democratic Party, considering the incendiary spots running on McCain’s behest that blast Obama and Congress.

From this smoldering wreckage that will be this election, what happens from Nov 5th on?

When the numbers seemed to point to a McCain/Obama campaign, I was somewhat hopeful that once one man won the Presidency, we could end the years of partisan warfare in our legislative houses, and get back to work on important “stuff.”

That seems pretty remote at this point. Either Obama enters the White House with the Angry Red Planet screeching for his pre-emptive impeachment, or McCain slogs thru bill after bill of Congressional Warfare that will end badly for the citizens of this fine nation.

We all know when it started, and with who. Now that this grisly tactic didn’t work, it seems McCain and the GOP are determined to take America down with their failing campaign, or will stand on top of her body if they win.

I still have hope – maybe Laughing Boy can submit his resume to Gov Ritter, and ask to be appointed the next Secretary of State. Most of the authors that post on this fine website are patriots who love their State, and I wish they were the ones debating our future in the houses of government.

Even the trolls have had their use, if even to demonstrate the ignorance and fanaticism that still exists on the political fringe.

But in this poisonous atmosphere of political fear, is there any way that we can overcome it’s corruption and actually have a meaningful dialogue over the direction of America?

    1. I fully expect that the victorious Democrats will be gracious, will recognize – unlike some on the other side – that all Americans love their country. I expect that Obama will have more than one Republican in his Cabinet, and others as close advisors.

I expect that the policies that come out of an Obama presidency will garner widespread support. I expect there will be serious – not just lip-service – efforts to reduce abortions without denying women the right to choose. I expect there will be a lot of “Nixon in China” type opportunities for a President Obama to make changes that are sorely needed and that Republicans might actually favor.

We will see a presidency that appeals to our higher, not our baser, instincts and values. And there will be a trickle-down effect into local politics.

      1. As I’ve seen America become the world’s bully, the home of the plutocrats, the world’s debtor.  Since Reagan I have become very pessimistic about her, but the Boosh II years caused me to lose all faith. From shining city on the hill to moral cesspool.

When Obama is sworn in I will go outside and kiss the American earth.

  2. I saw this documentary this past weekend at the Tivoli.  For those of you who are interested in politics, regardless of party, I highly recommend it.  This man changed politics, and the mechanics of campaigns arguably more than anyone else in the last 50 years.

  3. (Press release from the DNC this morning)

Arrest of GOP Operative Raises Questions of Hypocrisy

Washington, DC – On a conference call today, the National and California State Democratic Parties called on the Republican Party to end their hypocrisy on voter registration fraud and sever all ties with long-time GOP Operative Mark Jacoby.  Jacoby is the owner of Young Political Majors (YPM) who was arrested in California last weekend on two counts of voter registration fraud and two counts of perjury.    Jacoby faced allegations of voter fraud in 2004 when he worked for Arno Political Consultants.   YPM is currently under contract with the California State Republican Party to register voters.  John McCain’s California Co-Chair is also a leading supporter of the CA Republican State Party’s voter registration efforts.  Just yesterday, campaign finance reports revealed that the MCCain-Palin campaign and the RNC have paid Nathan Sproul, a Republican operative who has faced numerous charges of unethical and potentially illegal activity surrounding voter registration.

“We’ve made it clear that we don’t and won’t tolerate voter registration fraud,” said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney.  “But this exposes the absolute hypocrisy of John McCain and the Republican Party and their same-old Washington tactics.  Over the past few weeks we’ve heard John McCain denounce voter fraud on the campaign trail while the RNC hurls false attacks, so the question is: where is the outrage now?”

“One month ago I called on state and local law enforcement authority to investigate a report that voter fraud being committed by a firm hired by the Republican Party of California called the Young Political Majors,” said CA Democratic State Party Chairman Art Torres.  Most importantly, what did the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee know about this voter fraud ahead of time?  These are the same “repeat offenders” we’ve had collecting signatures for the Republican party… in 2004, 2006, and 2007. The California Republican Party and the National Republican party need to immediately terminate its relationship with YPM or any other firm that is committing voter fraud.”

“The Republican National Committee, the Republicans, the McCain campaign have been hammering away for weeks with the same old Washington politics, said DNC Legal Counsel Joe Sandler. “In fact, none of the charges that they’ve been talking about have actually panned out. In Montana they were forced to withdraw challenges, baseless challenges to 6,000 new voters. On a call yesterday, the RNC’s communications director was forced to admit that he was unable to come up with a single example, of actual voter  fraud. And today, on another McCain campaign press conference call, Florida Governor Charlie Crist, said he did not believe that voter fraud would be an issue, a problem of any kind in the state of Florida this year.  It’s the height of hypocrisy for the Republicans to harp on this theme.”

The following are the facts on the McCain campaign and RNC’s connection to Questionable GOP Operatives:

MCCAIN CAMPAIGN STEERED $175,000 TO COMPANY NOTORIOUS FOR SUPPRESSING THE VOTE:

McCain’s Campaign Directed $175,000 To Lincoln Strategy, Whose Managing Partner Nathan Sproul Has Been Investigated On Multiple Occasions For Suppressing Democratic Voter Turnout. “John McCain’s campaign has directed $175,000 to the firm of a Republican operative accused of massive voter registration fraud in several states. According to campaign finance records, a joint committee of the McCain-Palin campaign, the RNC and the the California Republican Party, made a $175,000 payment to the group Lincoln Strategy in June for purposes of ‘registering voters.’ The managing partner of that firm is Nathan Sproul, a renowned GOP operative who has been investigated on multiple occasions for suppressing Democratic voter turnout, throwing away registration forms and even spearheading efforts to get Ralph Nader on ballots to hinder the Democratic ticket. … That Sproul would come under the employment umbrella of the McCain campaign — the Republican National Committee has also separately paid Lincoln Strategy at least $37,000 for voter registration efforts this cycle — is not terribly surprising. Sproul, who has donated nearly $30,000 to McCain’s campaign, has been in the good graces of GOP officials for the past decade despite charges of ethical and potentially legal wrongdoing.” [Huffington Post, 10/20/08]

Lincoln Strategy Is Paid By California Republican Party/V8 Committee That Is Funded By McCain Victory California. Lincoln Strategy is paid by the California Republican Party/V8 committee that has been funded by McCain Victory California. McCain Victory California is a joint fundraising committee of the RNC, the McCain campaign and the CA GOP. [FEC]

MARK JACOBY ARRESTED ON “SUSPICION OF COMMITTING VOTER REGISTRATION FRAUD:

“Young Political Majors Owner Mark Anthony Jacoby Arrested On “Suspicion Of Committing Voter Registration Fraud.”  “Mark Anthony Jacoby, who owns the firm known as Young Political Majors (YPM), was arrested after allegedly registering himself to vote, once in 2006 and again in 2007, at an address where did not live.

An investigation by the Secretary of State’s Election Fraud Investigation Unit revealed that Jacoby twice registered to vote at the address of a childhood home in Los Angeles although he no longer lived there. The Secretary of State’s fraud unit and the Ontario Police Department arrested Jacoby near an Ontario hotel just before midnight Saturday […] On October 3, the Public Integrity Unit of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office charged Jacoby with four felonies: two counts of voter registration fraud and two counts of perjury.  A warrant was issued for his arrest and bail was set at $50,000.”  [California Secretary of State Press Release, 10/19/08]

JACOBY’S COMPANY ACCUSED OF VOTER FRAUD IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY:

San Bernardino County Democrats Charged That Young Political Majors Used Petition Drivers Throughout The County To Register Residents As Republicans Without Their Knowledge. “The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office is still collecting information regarding claims that a political group has fraudulently registered Democrats as Republicans to pad the voter rolls, officials said. ‘To say it’s under investigation is a bit of an overstatement,’ said John Goritz, deputy district attorney for the public integrity unit. ‘We’re still receiving documents and evaluating it as it comes in.’ Local Democrats have charged that a political firm, Young Political Majors, has used petition drives throughout the county to register residents as Republicans without their knowledge. The allegations arose when a substantial amount of registered Republicans were submitted to the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters over a period of just two weeks. The group’s owner and operator, Arizona-based Mark Jacoby, has denied any wrongdoing.” [Daily Press, 9/28/08]

YPM HAS A HISTORY OF VOTER FRAUD ACCUSATION IN CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, ARIZONA AND MASSACHUSETTS:

Young Political Major Has A History Of Fraud Complaints Nationwide And Have Been Accused Of Voter Fraud In Massachusetts, Florida And Arizona. “A company hired by the Republican Party denies it used deceptive practices to register 70,000 new Republican voters in the United States this year. Young Political Majors, has a history of fraud complaints nationwide, most recently in California where some new Republicans allege they were tricked into changing their registration, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. The Times said it randomly interviewed 46 of the hundreds of California voters the firm recently registered and 37 of them — 80 percent — said they thought they were signing petitions for tougher state law enforcement penalties, not changing political parties, the Times reported. Voters in Massachusetts, Florida and Arizona have made similar accusations against Young Political Majors, which is paid $7 to $12 for each GOP registration it secures, the Times reported.” [UPI, 10/18/08]

Young Political Majors Asked People To Sign A Phony Petition To Increase Prison Time For Sex Offenders Of Outside Of Wal-Marts And Chaffey College, According To Democrats. “Democrats are demanding an investigation into a recent surge of Republican registrants in San Bernardino County, claiming voter registration fraud belies the numbers. Members of the San Bernardino County Democratic Party are holding a news conference today to discuss their claims and urge authorities to take action. Mark Kirk, an executive committee member of the county’s Republican Party, denied his party was involved in any illegal or unethical action. ‘Their claims have more to do with their disappointment in the registration numbers than anything,’ he said Tuesday. ‘It still wouldn’t make a difference. We’d still be a red county.’ The county has long been dominated by Republicans. In 2002, they outnumbered registered Democrats by 60,000. That gap narrowed to 30,000 in 2006. By May, it was down to 5,000. As of Tuesday, county Registrar Kari Verjil said there were 303,531 registered Democrats and 307,132 registered Republicans. … Verjil, who turned the complaint and supporting documentation over to the California Secretary of State’s Office and the district attorney’s Public Integrity Unit, said she is doubtful voter registration fraud has been occurring because she hasn’t received calls from upset voters. Most of the alleged voter-registration fraud occurred when members of Young Political Majors asked people to sign a phony petition to increase prison time for sex offenders outside of Wal-Marts and Chaffey College, according to the Democratic Party. Voters were either asked to sign as a Republican after being promised it wouldn’t change their political party or were asked to sign in two places, one of which was a Republican registration form, Robb said.” [San Bernardino County Sun, 9/16/08]

CA GOP Spokesman: Young Political Majors Is A Subcontractor Of The CA Republican Party; California Grassroots Mobilization Is The Vendor. “The San Bernardino County Democratic Party pressed its case Wednesday that the recent surge in Republican registration in the county is fraudulent. Democratic officials gathered in front of the county registrar of voters office and accused a company that specializes in gathering signatures of duping voters into switching their party affiliation. ‘I am appalled at the deceptive and probably illegal tactics used by these crews operating in our communities,’ said Carol Robb, chairwoman of the San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee. But California Republicans say Democrats are just dusting off old tactics to attack the GOP in advance of a planned celebration next month marking the county becoming predominantly Democrat. ‘They were going to have a party, and now they are upset they are having to put their cake on hold,’ said Hector Barajas, a California Republican Party spokesman. The county issued 7,000 voter-registration forms to Young Political Majors, Registrar of Voters Kari Verjil said Wednesday. She has turned over information to the district attorney and secretary of state. Young Political Majors is a subcontractor to the California Republican Party, Barajas said. California Grassroots Mobilization is the vendor, he said.” [Press Enterprise, 9/18/08]

MCCAIN CAMPAIGN CO-CHAIR MAJOR SUPPORTER OF CA GOP VOTER REGISTRATION EFFORTS:

Steve Poizner, The McCain Campaign’s California State Co-Chair, Is Supporting The CA Fund That Is Paying Young Political Majors.  “U.S. Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign today announced that Steve Poizner, California Insurance Commissioner, has endorsed John McCain for president. Commissioner Poizner will serve as a State Co-Chair for the McCain campaign in California.” According to the Ventura County Star, California “[s]ignature gatherers are paid from a fund partially supported by Republican gubernatorial hopeful Steve Poizner, a Silicon Valley multimillionaire who has offered Young Political Majors $5 per new GOP voter.” [States News Service, 2/9/08; Ventura County Star, 10/20/08]

  4. They called Obama a terrorist, when John McCain “pals around’ with G. Gordon Liddy.

They called Obama a Socialist. Their member called for investigations of all Dems in the House and the Senate for Anti-American activities.

They have used Wright, when their own Reverends are racists, anti-Semites and gay hating.

They tried to make Obama a part of ACORN, when McCain’s team is clearly involved with voter fraud.

Their robo calls to millions of people are filled with hate filled messages.

I believe in my heart and soul, that this party wants Obama assassinated.  They are baiting every stupid, ignorant person in their party to feel ok with the idea that Obama must go.

They are liars and hate mongers and the most Anti-American people I have ever witnessed in this country’s history.  Yes, even worse than the 60s hatred.  Because today, we know better.

To all you Repubs, grow up and stop the hate.  You will not fair well with this type of sick behavior.

You must stop your party or forever be exposed and know as the Party of Hate. If anything happens to Barack Obama ALL REPUBLICANS WILL HAVE BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS – YOU HAVE A SICK PARTY THAT STANDS FOR EVERYTHING AMERICA IS SUPPOSED TO BE AGAINST!

    1. You’re better than that. Really you are.

And surely Obama deserves better than the hatemongering screeds you just authored.

Take your dog for a walk. Pet your cat. Breath deeply.

Life is good. In 13 days this election will be over.  There is plenty of hate on both sides and no need for you to add to the sum.

      1. I get that way too after being bashed for having an opinion that is not liberal in nature. I have to leave for awhile and cool down.

This is the only blog that I have ever followed. I don’t know why I do, maybe it is because I like to argue sometimes. Almost no one here has even close to the same values as me, so it would make more sense if I just moved on too.

But you seem to be more open minded in the sense that you can express your views and listen to others too. Even if their views clash with your morals.

So take some time but come back. I think that Whiskey chick, (if she even is female) is just drinking during the day. Another reason why I am thinking she/he is actually Sir Robin the “hic” Bravely Running Away one.

      1. and GWB/Cheney and the neocons have done to this country. I’m alone in recognizing the denial of science, along with the dozens of nobel laureate scientists who are backing Obama…I’m alone with the millions who oppose spending $2BILLION a week in this god forsaken mistake of a war in Iraq! I alone am angry with the top 1% of the country getting richer by $700 Billion in the last eight years, and then having the rest of us bail their fucked up asses out of the hole they dug themselves in. I’m alone in abhoring the civil rights we’ve lost under this anti-constitutional administration. I’m alone in decrying the loss of our civil rights. I’m all alone….and wrong, that we are a poorer nation, despised by much of the world, with our manufacturing base shipped over seas, our air, water and wilderness more polluted.

Gecko, you’re just ignorant. Now, argue the points in my response.

Finally, I don’t hate anyone….ANYONE…I hate what they’re ignorant asses have done to this country that my children, and yours, will be paying for in the many years to come.

      2. Ugly election incidents show lingering U.S. racism

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) – Two weeks before an election that could install the first black U.S. president, scattered ugly incidents have reflected a deep residue of racism among some segments of white America.

And some feared that Obama could be a target for people who reject him on racial grounds alone. …

“Many whites feel they are losing their country right before their eyes,” said Mark Potok, who directs the Southern Poverty Law Center that monitors hate groups. “What we are seeing at this moment is the beginning of a real backlash.”

How many times do these people need to hear that Barack Obama “pals around with Terrorist” before they act.  I have heard it everyday, a couple of times a day.  As a matter of fact, I hear every time Palin and McCain speak.

The latest incident occurred on Monday when the body of bear cub was found on the campus of Western Carolina University in North Carolina. Obama campaign signs were placed around the dead animal’s head. School officials said it was a prank.

… an Ohio man hung a figure bearing an Obama sign from a tree in his yard. The man told local media he didn’t want to see an African-American running the country.

“They see jobs disappearing to other countries, and now they see a man who is African American and who will very likely become president of the United States. For some of those people that symbolizes the end of the world as they know it.”

He estimated there were as many as 800 white supremacy or nationalist groups in the United States, with at least 100,000 as “an inner core” of membership and many more on the fringes.

One such group, the League of American Patriots, last month distributed literature about why a “black ruler” would destroy the country.

And once again it comes back to a Republican Group..

In California, a Republican group said it intended no racial overtone when its October newsletter depicted a fake food stamp bearing a likeness of Obama’s head on a donkey’s body surrounded by fried chicken, watermelon and other images evoking insulting stereotypes about African-Americans.

“There are a lot of Republicans and McCain supporters who find it hard to believe that a black guy whose middle name is Hussein is going to be the next president of the United States,” said David Bositis, senior research associate at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

Dead animals on a college campus and the administration says it is just a prank?  If it had GW signs on it, would it be a prank?

And the Leadership, according to Powell, seems to be fanning this fear and hate.

I just have to ask, “Why?”

    2. I do not like the way the crazies are being spun up, but I think there are plenty of Republicans who do not like it either.

I think it is better to encourage the people in the party who want to argue based on the strength of their ideas to take control of their part–not to demonize anyone who happens to have an r behind their name.

Not all Republicans support these awful tactics.  Remember, Colin Powell is still a Republican.

        1. This morning I had time to go through all of my emails, newspapers and blogs. All it takes is a few hours on line, to remember all that has been thrown in this campaign from the Right. At some point the Republican Party has to look at its tactics and see that what it is doing is inciting hatred.

Even Colin Powell stated that SENOIR members of his party are spreading hate-filled rumors that Barack is Muslim and hangs out with terrorists.  We are at war with terrorists; they are killing our sons and daughters.  Why would highly educated people add Obama’s name with that of people we are at war with?  Are you telling me they don’t understand the possible impact? I find that hard to believe. And it is said day after day, after day

Who is the intended audience that statement will have the most impact on?  What is the intended result?

No, not all Republicans buy into this type of behavior, obviously. However, it is up to those Republicans (like Powell) to stop this type rhetoric. It is dangerous and it is irresponsible.

We all know what happens in history when people with the right intentions fail to act.

Sorry to come off as hateful, absolutely not what I had intended. What I am is disappointed in my members of my country.  I feel let down. I never thought I would see this type of blatant hatred in my lifetime, in my country.

Yes, there are more that standing against hate, but a surprising amount that are standing with it.

And once again sorry to come off as hateful.

          1. where are the Republican voices that asked their party to come to their senses? Where were they? Where? There is still close to 50% of this country ready to vote for McCain. Why? That party has cost us so much in blood, treasury and esteem. Where have the Republican voices been?

  5. 2.60 (down as low as 2.48) today.

Credit thawing out from the 4.60 levels.  Still have a way to go to the sub 2.0 levels that will have me breathing easier.

        1. He lives in his mother’s basement, interns for Jonathan Coors by writing anti-worker screeds and hides behind an alias to libel Ernie Duran and other pro-worker leaders.

Did I mention he also fetches coffee for Julian Cole? Even then, half the time he forgets Julian likes two sugars.

          Whatta Maroon.

  6. Apparantly I didn’t get signed up for mail in ballot so I just went and did early voting.

    Straight D

I din’t vote on RTD board (never got any lit).

Changed my mind at the last moment and voted for 51 (marital peace).

    for 58,59 and the letters.

    Also for 3A

Against retention on 2 judges (I won’t say which)

was out in minutess, but its going to be hard for people who haven’t looked at all the races on the ballot.  Even I hadn’t looked at all the races and I’m a junkie.

  7. This is a serious question. I know what happens if a President or VP is sworn in and then kicks the bucket.

But what if we were to elect McCain-Palin on November 4 and then McCain dies between then and January 20? Is Palin sworn in as President automatically, or does the Republican Party or someone else get to pick Mitt Romney or someone else as a President stand-in?

Same question before the election too: Suppose Obama were to die between now and November 4: Would Biden automatically become the Presidential candidate and would the Democratic Party get to pick another person – like Hillary Clinton – as a stand-in?

    1. But if the President-elect were to die before the Electoral College met, then the electors would be free to vote for whomever they saw fit.

The party would, I’m sure, try to reach a consensus of who to tell the Electors to vote for, but it would ultimately be up to them.

      1. In the case of us Dems it would be Hillary. She got the votes in the primary and she has the clout with the superb job she has done working for Barak.

In the Republican side it would be open warfare. You would have Palin, Romney, Huckabee, and even Ron Paul all fighting over it. And none would have a majority.

    2. Section 3 of the 20th Amendment provides that if the President-elect dies before his or her term begins, the Vice President-elect becomes President on Inauguration Day and serves for the full term to which the President-elect was elected.

      1. That’s if they die AFTER the EC meets. Until they meet, the President is not technically elected yet.

If the POTUS-elect dies before the the EC, the only person the electors cannot cast ballots for is the deceased/incapacitated president.

          1. From a report published by U.S. Election Assistance Commission:

            http://www.eac.gov/about/docs/

The election of 1872 was relatively mundane. President Ulysses S. Grant won more than 80 percent of the Electoral College votes and handily won the popular vote over Liberal Republican candidate, Horace Greeley. But the election was interesting because Horace Greeley died after Election Day and before the voting of electors. Greeley had won 66 pledged electoral votes on Election Day, but when the Electoral College met in the various states, the electors were unsure about what to do. The electors split their votes among four different candidates for president and eight different candidates for vice president. Three electors from Georgia still chose to vote for Greeley posthumously, but those votes were disallowed by Congress.

As far as I know that is the only precedent.

            1. can vote for any eligible native born citizen over age 35.   Hell, they could elect Gecko if they wanted to.  Electors are bound only by their honor and we do have faithless electors from time to time.  If a nominee died before the EC voted they’d work as originally intended/…as a search commitee.

    3. if a candidate dies between now and Nov 4.

Each party has its own rules.  IIRC the Dem leadership would make a decision (I’m not aware of any specific procedure) and the GOP can either make a leadership decision or redo the convention.  I’ve heard that in very special circumstances election day can be pushed back, but I’m not sure.  Basically there just isn’t a good plan for a death in either party, or for the country in general.

Your question made me think of early voting.  Votes for the President are non-transferable, they don’t belong to the party or their VP in a Pres. sense.  Would the early people basically lose their Pres. vote?  That would mean that even Ritter wouldn’t be able to vote for, or against, the new candidate.

  8. Straight Democratic candidates. I’ve done that before, but usually there is at least one Republican I think would be better. Not this year. Our DA is an unopposed Republican and I didn’t vote in that. Voted to not retain one judge. No on 46, 47, 48, 49, 52, 54, Yes on everything else.

In small Lake County at 2:30 PM there were 4 people voting.
