The liberal activist group Progress Now just sent us links to criminal and House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct complaints against Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, as well as CD-4 Republican Party chairman Ron Buxman. Links to .PDF copies follow, and here are some excerpts:
I am writing to urge that the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct immediately commence an investigation to determine whether Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) violated House rules by engaging in a pattern of insidious campaign activities that do not reflect creditably on the House.
Rep. Musgrave is currently running for re-election in the 4th Congressional District of Colorado. Betsy Markey is the Democratic challenger. On October 3, 2008, Colorado State Republican chairperson Ronald Buxman – a supporter of Rep. Musgrave – submitted a complaint to the Department of Justice for a criminal investigation of Ms. Markey. See Letter from Ronald Buxman to Department of Justice, et al., October 3, 2008 (attached as Exhibit A); Musgrave Supporter Files Complaint Against Markey, ABC 9 News, October 7, 2008 (attached as Exhibit B). The complaint centers on the allegation that Ms. Markey violated federal law by not divesting her interest in her company while simultaneously pursuing government contracts for her company and working for Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO). See Exh. B.
Mr. Buxman told news reporters that Rep. Musgrave’s congressional campaign helped him prepare the complaint…
Rep. Musgrave’s flagrant deception of voters and abuse of the criminal justice system for partisan gain is severe enough to reflect discredit on Congress. I respectfully request that the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct launch an immediate investigation of this matter and sanction Rep. Musgrave accordingly.
From the second complaint, addressed to the Justice Department:
Only days after Rep. Musgrave’s campaign collaborated with Mr. Buxman to submit his complaint to the Department of Justice, the campaign broadcast a television ad citing Mr. Buxman’s complaint as purported evidence that Ms. Markey “got caught” violating federal law. Specifically, the ad cites an October 7th article from the Denver Post reporting on the complaint and highlights this quote: “A complaint filed with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Integrity alleges Markey appears to have violated federal laws.” The voice on the television ad claims that the Department of Justice has been asked to investigate Mr. Markey and that she could spend five years in prison.
The allegations in Mr. Buxman’s complaint have been factually disproven by numerous sources. [Fort Collins Coloradoan, 10/16/2008]. Based on these facts it is patent that Rep. Musgrave and Mr. Buxman filed the complaint solely to fabricate criminal wrongdoing by Ms. Markey that could be used in a political attack ad against her.
I respectfully urge you to launch an immediate investigate of both Mr. Buxman and Congresswoman Musgrave to determine whether they violated federal law by making false statements to federal agencies.
The complaints are signed by a CD-4 resident named Michelle Grooms, who we’ve never heard of in any political context (smart) but we’re told is a registered Republican (smarter). Developing…

many years could Musgrave get for this?
Markey should put out an an suggesting they share a cell….
so that they could make a TV ad about then they deserve to go to the principals office.
Naughty nasty campaigning but it is exactly what you would expect from Musgrave.
You say it’s “smart” that Michelle Grooms, the CD-4 resident who filed these complaints is a Republican. I gather that the complaints themselves didn’t contain that information, but you found that out from other sources…
“Smart” implies that unknown others (the Markey campaign?) worked with Ms. Grooms to accomplish a political stunt: to “get” Musgrave.
Isn’t it at least POSSIBLE that Ms. Grooms is simply a PRINCIPLED INDIVIDUAL not doing a “smart” thing but simply doing what she believes is the RIGHT thing?
Thanks to her. A lot of people read the admission by Buxman that he’d been working hand in glove with Musgrave’s campaign to prepare these fake charges just so they could be used for attack ads – yet no one else actually DID anything.
She’s a far better individual than Joe the Plumber, that’s for sure.
Betsy & team clearly know how to go toe to toe with Musgrave and counter-punch. And to then turn and get the conversation back to what’s important.
I think Betsy will win strong – and maybe we should send her campaign team to CD-6 in 2 years…
With the right campaign I think Coffman can be vulnerable. I think Hank Eng has done well to soften him up by bringing his storied ethical problems to light.
I’d be surprised if Coffman doesn’t get a primary with some of this stuff thrown in his face again.
