New Schaffer/Marianas Disclosure Coming

  • by: Colorado Pols

We got a press release earlier today from Campaign Money Watch, one of a number of independent groups working Colorado’s Senate race. They’ll be holding a conference tomorrow where they claim they will “debunk the recent claim by Senate candidate Bob Schaffer (R-CO) that he was responsible for the shutdown of a sweatshop in the Northern Mariana Islands.” Our curiosity is piqued, release follows.

**MEDIA ADVISORY**

Watchdog group to debunk Schaffer’s sweatshop claim, release new hard-hitting TV ad

Washington, D.C. – Campaign Money Watch, a nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog group, will hold a conference call Tuesday to debunk the recent claim by Senate candidate Bob Schaffer (R-CO) that he was responsible for the shutdown of a sweatshop in the Northern Mariana Islands.

The group will also announce the release of a new television ad in Colorado highlighting ties between Schaffer, jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff and sweatshop owners. The ad urges Schaffer to support bipartisan campaign finance reform.

“We believe that Bob Schaffer is not telling the truth when he claims he ‘helped’ shut down sweatshops, and we’re demanding that he provide any evidence he has,” said David Donnelly, director of Campaign Money Watch.

WHAT: Conference call on Schaffer’s sweatshop claims, new TV ad

WHO: David Donnelly, director of Campaign Money Watch

WHEN: 11 a.m. MDT (1 p.m. EDT), Tuesday, October 7

The call is open to all interested reporters, editorial writers, bloggers and columnists. Those wishing to participate should dial (888) 321-3075 and use conference ID 68058429.

  1. It does sound like they don’t have any actual proof based on

We believe that Bob Schaffer is not telling the truth when he claims he ‘helped’ shut down sweatshops, and we’re demanding that he provide any evidence he has

But if they frame the press event and TV ad right, it will hurt Schaffer. I think one or two more like this and he might as well close up shop and go on vacation for the rest of the election.

Maybe he can get a special rate at a hotel in the Marianas Islands.

  2. … has now become a grandiose claim that his visit was RESPONSIBLE for the shutdown?

That’s approaching Palinesque levels of arrogance (I can see Russia, therefore I’m a foreign policy expert).
