Unprecedented Anti-Musgrave Ad Buy

  • by: Colorado Pols

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports:

An environmental group is spending $665,000 on a new television ad campaign attacking Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, doubling down on its efforts to unseat the three-term Republican incumbent, according to a filing with the Federal Election Commission Sunday.

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund already has spent more than $580,000 targeting Musgrave, including about $400,000 to broadcast two earlier television commercials.

All told, Defenders and two other independent groups have spent about $1.9 million targeting Musgrave in this election. The $665,000 ad buy is the largest single independent expenditure in any House race in the country this year, [Pols emphasis] according to a database maintained by the Web site Swing State Project.

“Marilyn Musgrave is wrong if she thinks that throwing desperate and baseless attacks against her challenger will let her hide her atrocious record of giving billions in tax breaks to big oil while voting against lower fuel costs for drivers and co-sponsoring legislation to enrich her family by thousands of dollars per year on their fancy coin collections,” said Ed Yoon, Defenders’ campaign manager in Colorado and New Mexico. We will keep informing voters of her out-of-touch and self-enriching priorities.”

Bottom line: Angie Paccione never had friends like these, underscoring the nature of a threat Musgrave has never faced before now.

  1. I thoroughly dislike Musgrave. But I have to laugh at these ads that start out with two actors saying:

“Did you hear that Marilyn Musgrave has gone negative on Betsy Markey?”

“Oh gee, that’s terrible. Shame on her!”

And then the first actor goes into a big NEGATIVE litany of all the horrors that Musgrave represents…

I wish the campaigners would at least acknowledge that THEY’RE going negative too – even if they feel forced to do so because “the other side started it.”

  2. straight Republican ticket. The dems will all win but I want to give the Republican party encouragement to keep trying. And to be honest, if they could win I would vote 1 Republican, 1 Libertarian, and 1 Democrat for the 3 County Commissioner positions (all 3 are up this year).

  3. Would it be safe to say that her seat is untouchable for Dems–at least for the foreseeable future?

However, assuming she wins, I think it would be likely for at least one or two Republicans to challenge her in the primary in ’10.

      1. It just seems like a “now or never” kind of situation for CD-4 Dems. But you’re right about demographic changes, especially when redistricting occurs after the 2010 census.

        1. the Ds still control both houses of the lege and the governorship in 2011 when the district lines are redrawn, expect a gerrymander that tosses enough Ds into the 4th to make it a safe dem seat.   probably the way to do that is attach r-leaning eastern colorado to 5 and 6, making them even more lopsidedly republican and moving

ds , perhaps the Aurora section of Adams County, into the 4th. A good time will be had by all.

          1. CD-1 has outgrown itself, and when you add in the rules and court cases that dictate how lines have to be drawn that don’t split counties and population centers except with certain exceptions, it’s going to be interesting to be sure.

            1. districts covered by a state constitutional amendment and done by a bipartisan commission. The lege itself does congressional redistricting. As long as they don’t obviously screw minorities, they have prtty much free rein, thus say the scotus. Look what the Rs tried in their midnight gerrymander. It was only struck down because it was outside the time frame for resistricting, 2010-12, not because it was a partisan hack job.

    1. Betsy is a damn good candidate running a really good campaign. As no one is perfect, it’s safe to say we won’t every see a superior combination.

And this election it totally sucks to be a Republican and to be an incumbent. So it won’t be more favorable.

We’ll see if having someone every 20 feet on the CSU campus registering students will make the difference.

  4. Marilyn Musgrave’s luck is finally running out.

The only question worth pondering is who will take Markey on in 2010? Likely candidates include:

    DA Ken Buck

    Former Treasurer Marc Hillman

    State Representative Cory Gardner

    Former Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave

Former Congressman and former Senatorial candidate Bob Schaffer.

    State Senator Scott Renfro

  5. Over at the national/international Americablog.com there’s a huge plug for Betsy Markey. This is the type of internet help that is difficult to gauge the benefit of…but can be huge!

Help Betsy Markey defeat Marilyn Musgrave, one of the most hateful homophobes in the U.S. House

    Joe Sudbay (DC) В· 10/06/2008 08:10:00 PM ET В·

    This one is personal.

There are many reasons to support Betsy Markey. She’s a solid progressive who will vote right on the important issues.

But, the best reason to donate to Markey can be summed up in two words: Marilyn Musgrave.

Betsy Markey is poised to beat one of the worst, if not the worst, anti-gay right wing Republicans. So much can be written about Musgrave’s obsession with the gays. My “favorite” is this pronouncement in 2006:

Musgrave declared that gay marriage “is the most important issue that we face today.” She told the audience that when you’re in a cultural war like this, you have to respond with equal and hopefully greater force if you want to win,” and warned that the “future is grim” if gay marriage is not banned.

Yes, she did. Musgrave was the lead sponsor of the anti-gay constitutional amendment for several sessions and is on the bill again this year. One of the best lines ever about Musgrave comes from McJoan at DailyKos:

For those who haven’t been following her career, she’s as wingnutty as it gets.

According to Chris “The Fix” Cillizza: , Musgrave’s seat is the 8th most likely to switch parties this year:

8/ Colorado’s 4th district (R): A quick look at Rep. Marilyn Musgrave’s (R) career in Congress shows a candidate who vastly underperforms in a comfortably Republican seat. Democratic nominee Betsy Markey is the best candidate Musgrave has faced and, according to polling in the contest, leads the incumbent. Republicans believe an alleged conflict of interest on Markey’s part is a silver bullet but we remain skeptical. (Previous ranking: 12)

Help make this happen. Help defeat one of the worst homophobes in Congress. When Musgrave finally loses, you’ll really feel good about playing a role in her defeat.

Donate this week and every contribution will be matched by a Democratic member of Congress. A t.v. ad in Markey’s district costs $345. Every time, we raise $172.50, we putting an ad on the air to defeat Musgrave.
