Democratic nominee Betsy Markey is the best candidate Musgrave has faced and, according to polling in the contest, leads the incumbent. On Tuesday the Senate Republicans call for a hiring and construction freeze. Two days later the Governor agrees.
The Governor tries to make a deal on Measure 47. The proposed deal now seems dead.
Is the Governor leading the state or being blown by the currents?
A governor is always trying to lead the state but many times finds themselves at the mercy of events beyond their control. It’s a democracy, not a dictatorship.
With the R’s being agonistic toward each other and having a leader who quit, Survivor had a great metaphor of the imploding red buff party with their Fang tribe last night. Will it be Alabama’s Shelby or Utah’s Bennett who gets voted off at their tribal council caucus today?
No specifics here to stay in the guidelines of this site, but go to their site and it’s the top story. And keep in mind that their track record on stories of this type (ie non bigfoot ones) has been, I think 100%.
We gave a little and took a little on that debate if you recall. That said, we won’t subsidize this rumor until it’s off the scandal sheets either.
They are naming the names. I would say that is some credibility. OK, so my credibility is on the line by quoting the National Enquirer, but come on, it is interesting. Let the bloggers decide if it is news.

You can’t have it both ways. I’m a Democrat, I think smoking pot is your choice; I think having babies is your choice; I think who you sleep with is your choice. If I was going run for office to stop people from doing those things, I would think my glass house should be in family value order.

My 401k was growing briskly and I was able to use tax credits to help pay for my kids’s undergraduate education.
Now, we have a sexually chaste president at the helm. My 401k has lost $40k since january and my kids have $250,000 between them in student loans to go with their current graduate degrees.

So John McCain is running a pretty successful campaign in January and February, knocking off all his opponents except the indefatigable Mike Huckabee even without much money. Sure, he lied a little about his opponents, and sure, he claimed he was flying coach when he was actually flying on his wife’s private plane, but these are piddling. He’s on top of the world, and his strategy has paid off brilliantly.
Then the New York Times runs the lobbying story, briefly mentioning Iseman. For the first time in his post-Keating life, McCain avoids the media. Iseman disappears from public view (we still don’t know where she is), and McCain is visibly apoplectic.
What follows is a string of bizarre incidents.
* In March, McCain made the first of a series of basic factual errors (surprising for someone with a strong background in foreign policy), confusing Sunnis and Shiites and needing to be corrected by Joe Lieberman.
* On April 8, McCain cast his last vote in the Senate. He did not return to vote on the Senate floor for almost six months.
* In May, McCain finally rejected John Hagee’s endorsement, despite earlier defending him, and tried to sneak out medical records without giving reporters enough time to read them.
* On June 3, the night of the last Democratic primary, McCain tries to upstage both Clinton’s and Obama’s speeches with a widely-panned speech of his own.
* In July, McCain tries to one-up Obama’s trip to Berlin by going to a German restaurant in Ohio, as well as running ads in three towns around the country named “Berlin.”
* In August, McCain picks Sarah Palin as Vice President, who even many conservatives think is grossly unqualified. He also starts running his first really dishonest ads against Obama, which will eventually lead to even Karl Rove denouncing them.
* And now we have September, where McCain suspends and unsuspends his campaign for a single day.
I have to wonder, would John McCain not have gone nuts if he still had Vicki Iseman around?
…that actually makes sense. I was reading it as snark but history is full of men who totally blew it because of a woman. Maybe she was the one who kept him “centered.”
I’m still a little irked that we’ve never heard anything more about her. It was suggested by a Josh Marshall post (archives broken, so no link) asking if there’s anyone in McCain’s circle who could reassure him about going down to the debate. She’s the first one who came to mind.
I’m 53 and my wife still wants to know when I’m going to grow up 🙂

The signs shouldn’t have been there but it wasn’t her job to remove them. According ton MN law, she should have contacted state DOT, county, or city/township officials to remove the signs, not take them herself.

For some reason I don’t think it was the Obama bailout plan. The Obama Healthcare plan maybe? The Obama ANYTHING plan? No.
McCain’s bumbling over the last few days and ridiculous threat to not show up for the debate are going to have the effect of making more people watch tonight. When you’re behind in a race you want more people watching, not less. And as much as some of you would like to think Obama will just walk away with a win in the debate (and I hope he does) the debate format just doesn’t suit Obama’s professorial style. People don’t hear long well though out ideas in debates, they hear ten word answers. McCain has them, Obama always doesn’t…
It’s been all McCain all the time the last few days and this weekend will only be about “who won the debate,” not issues. That’s good for McCain. Then we’re into the VP Debate (more talk, no issues), the next Pres debates and before you know it, election day!
Like it or not, McCain has basically gone from the convention to election day without having to talk about policy, save a couple days of the “financial crisis.”
McCain was practicing a little bit, with an unknown opponent. And just as he was ending a practice session, he decided to call off the debate entirely. He’s hoping to wing it.
McCain has literally never ever had to debate a Democrat seriously. He’s seemed to do well in such things before, but only because he’s had incredibly friendly or pre-screened audiences.
Obama’s at least debated Alan Keyes, who’s nothing if not a good debater, and Obama did quite well.
I predict Obama kicks his ass and flusters him more than once tonight.
I agree the “suspension” will heighten interest in the debate. Two point swings are about all you see coming out of debates–not enough for McCain to catch up. Maybe heightening interest in the debate will allow him to double the swing. 4 points would scramble the race again.
Remember McCain can’t wait–voting has already begun in a couple of states.
However, I disagree with you on what Obama needs. Obama doesn’t need to win–he needs to pass a threshhold test. He needs to be “good enough,” then the prevailing environment makes it a “win”
I disagree with you on format–I think it favors Obama. Long answers, direct questioning and even though McCain asked for poiums, standing up makes McCain look like a dwarf.
If McCain “wins” (Obama doesn’t meet the threshhold test) he pulls even, If McCain loses the race is over. Another high stakes gamble from McCain.
I think this has set McCain where he now does have to sell that he can handle the presidency because of badly he handled this.

I’m a westerner at heart. I knew it in 1963 when I went to Philmont Scout Ranch. All the years between 1972 and 2007 only confirmed it. Isn’t it funny how one can have a home and maybe not know it until an event?
Well, at least the weather is rather nice right now, not hot, not humid. Nevertheless, I’d rather be in Peoria. I mean Colorado.
