The Democratic-leaning activist group Progress Now just sent out a press release calling on Rep. Marilyn Musgrave to remove her name from the list of sponsors of the Fair Treatment for Precious Metals Investors Act, following up on weekend news reports that the bill will directly benefit Musgrave’s husband’s substantial numismatic investments. Says Progress Now director Mike Huttner, “Musgrave should be ashamed that she is the sponsor of the bill to benefit her family at the expense of taxpayers.” Release follows.

(303) 931-4547 cellDenver: ProgressNowAction called on Rep. Marilyn Musgrave to immediately remove her name as a sponsor of legislation that would benefit her family.
“We call on Marilyn ‘Goldfinger’ Musgrave to immediately remove her name from a bill that will personally benefit her family,” stated Michael Huttner, Executive Director of ProgressNowAction, Colorado’s largest online advocacy organization. “The public needs to know about ‘Coingate,’ Musgrave’s legislation to benefit her husband’s investments.”
Over the weekend, the Fort Collins Coloradoan reported that Rep. Musgrave is one of only nine co-sponsors of legislation that will financially benefit coin collectors. (“Musgrave backs bill benefiting her family”, Coloradoan, 9/20/2008)
The legislation will reduce taxes on coins and precious metals of $52 million over 10 years. Musgrave’s husband had between $50,000 and $100,000 invested in coins and precious metals in 2007 as reported in Musgrave’s 2007 personal financial disclosures.
“Musgrave is an absolute hypocrite when it comes to corruption,” stated Huttner. “Musgrave should be ashamed that she is the sponsor of the bill to benefit her family at the expense of taxpayers,” he added.
The public can join the call for Musgrave to remove her name as a cosponsor by going to:

This is a little better than that old “drinking water” ad. Right on.
Ugh, I’d forgotten how lame that was.
And as for Musgrave, what a fool. She left herself wide open for this shit when she attacked Markey. Fool. Fool. Fool.
that ad was f-ing brilliant. I was so soothed by that sweet young girl’s voice and at the end she became so forceful! Commanding that we tell John McCain to keep his hands off CO water, I may just have to obey!
I’m talking about a lame 527 ad against Musgrave from the ’06 cycle.
but Media Matters Colorado discussed it here. (Can’t find video of it.) It was paid for by Pat Stryker.
SufiMarie seems to be referring to this ad from ProgressNow.

If Musgrave won’t pull her name, they pound her with a clear example of direct tax benefit to her husband – very bad.
If she does pull her name she admits she should not have done it and they pound her for doing something she knows was sleazy – very bad.
And Marilyn “Goldfinger” Musgrave has a good chance of resonating…
This isn’t “damned if you do, damned if you don’t.”
This is “damned because she already did.”
Maybe they are not giving her an easy way to run from her record, but that is not so much because this is a clever attack. She just has such a lousy record.
or the right nut of the wing mind?

James Bond: “Skin suffocation. It’s been known to happen to cabaret dancers. It’s all right as long as you leave a small bare patch at the base of the spine to allow the skin to breathe.”
M: “Someone obviously didn’t.”
