  1. The Sanders campaign is having to adjust its messaging on race. I guess that's good, that he and they can learn from their mistakes. I still think that some of the loudest, rudest hecklers at Bernie's speeches need to chill, but Bernie obviously needs to stop talking about race only in context of  his past in the Civil Rights movement and acknowledge the contemporary movement around police violence. Roderick Morrow,  creator of #BerniesoBlack explains it well on Vox:

Bernie Sanders, while he does have a good track record on race in the past, he's kind of been avoiding talking about certain racial issues now. Whenever he's asked a question, he goes into a spiel on economics — which is fine, obviously, people do want wage and class equality. But certain issues are race issues, and they do need to be talked about, at least from a candidate that I would like to vote for.

    1. Somebody 'splain Walker's high poll numbers in CO – I don't get it. He's coming in at 47-38 against Clinton, and 44-36 against Sanders.

Walker gets a 35 – 25 percent favorability rating in Colorado. Voters say 40 – 30 percent that he is honest; 46 – 23 percent that he has strong leadership and 38 – 33 percent that he cares about their needs.

Fricking Scott Walker, honest? a leader? Cares? Seriously?!!!

      1. One caveat. This is one of several Quinnipiac pols that show HRC far behind not only Walker but a bunch of other Rs here and in Virginia. Certainly bad news for HRC at present but since Quinnipiac has skewed so heavily right in so my recent cycles, often to the point of outlier status, the degree is most likely exaggerated. Still bad, of course.

While Walker's popularity is partly attributable to people not knowing much about him, such as that his leadership has been terrible for the Wisconsin economy, people do know a lot about HRC and a lot of people just don't like or trust her. Even many Dems like me who will vote for her don't much like her so that's no surprise. She'll definitely have to find a way to fix that.

She will do well with women but also needs an exciting running mate with strong appeal to the rest of the Obama constituency; minorities, students, younger voters for Obama like high turn out among those demos. Julian Castro could go a long way to make up for lack of HRC enthusiasm among those demos here and elsewhere. A centrist old white guy to try to do the old Clinton triangulation thing would probably be a disaster, not attracting any R leaners and not turning out the demos she needs in the numbers she needs.

          1. Your favorite GOP candidate:

              1. I believe that is the original Bozo the Clown from WGN-TV in Chicago.  A true clown icon for those of us who grew up in Chicago Land long, long ago.

  2. Sobering background and prognosis regarding the Aurora Theater shooter's future:

Whitson's study of capital punishment in Colorado from 1999-2010 found that the vast majority of death penalty prosecutions result in life sentences, pleas to lesser offenses or acquittals. Another study, in 2013, found that only 0.6 percent of first-degree murder cases resulted in death sentences.

"The cost of death prosecutions in Colorado is high, and the execution yield is extraordinarily low," Whitson's study determined.

Holmes' appeals could be even more complex because of his mental illness. Doctors testified that he suffers from schizophrenia. If his mental state deteriorates while he is on death row, he may never be executed, Radelet said.

"If he is sent to death row, we're going to need dump trucks full of money to pay the mental health experts who will continue to argue this for the next 20 years," Radelet said. "Even if Holmes is sane today, there will be inevitable questions about his sanity at the time of execution."

  3. Need more proof that if you elect a Republican, you are just screwing yourself?

(FYI Pols –editor controls have disappeared)

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton is a classic tax-and-spend liberal. So why is his state walloping Scott Walker’s Wisconsin in terms of economic growth?

Elected in 2010, Governor Scott Walker upended a hundred years of liberal populism, charting a conservative path for Wisconsin that made him a darling of the Republican Right, but left his state with a serious budget shortfall and disappointing job growth.

Meanwhile, across the border in neighboring Minnesota, Governor Mark Dayton has relentlessly pursued liberal policies, embodying the tax-and-spend Democrat that Republicans love to caricature. The result, surprising to many, is that the Minnesota economy is going gangbusters while Wisconsin’s job growth has fallen to 44th among the 50 states.

Dayton has raised the minimum wage, and he’s significantly increased taxes on the top 2 percent of wage earners to close a budget shortfall and to raise money for investments in infrastructure and education.

Walker is running for president and touting hard-right policies that play well with Iowa caucusgoers. He opposed raising the minimum wage, has significantly weakened unions, reduced spending for education, cut taxes on the wealthy, and increased taxes on the middle class in part to pay for the tax cut. According to the nonpartisan Wisconsin Budget Project, Walker gave tax breaks that disproportionally favored upper-income earners while cutting $56 million in tax credits for working families.
