yeah, where are all the great Conservative legal minds in CO like Antonin Scalia?

You might wonder why a law that works so well and does so much good is the object of so much political venom — venom that is, by the way, on full display in Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissenting opinion, with its rants against “interpretive jiggery-pokery.”

A conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it.

    William F. Buckley

Conservatives and Republicans have been upholding Buckley's promise from the beginning of time. They're so stupid and stubborn that they'd like to reverse much of the progress we've made at any given time, so we can get back to the good old days and good old ways.

Let them howl, whine, complain and threaten. But don't let them think the good old days really were. They weren't. And don't let them think they can stop progress. They can't.

I awoke early this morning, and I kept hearing this distant, sort of rumbling sound. I couldn't figure it out until I read the comments at the link you provided…

It was the collective sound of Republican heads exploding all over the place.

    • PeoplePower says:

I've always been fascinated by this quote of Buckley's.  Note that he doesn't want to stop progress.  It's history that he wants to stop.  I know it's possible to rewrite history, but how do you stop it?

  2. Zappatero says:

    The times they are a'changing'

The recent CNN/WMUR holds numbers within it that have likely kept establishment consultants and pollsters up in bed for a couple of nights now.

“Which Democratic candidate do you think best represents the values of Democrats like yourself?”

    Bernie Sanders 41%
    Hillary Clinton 30%

Pretty sure Hillary is smart enough to adjust her campaign accordingly. Not so sure our senior senator has the political skills or wherewithal to even know what's happening here. Oh, well………

    • Andrew Carnegie says:

Zap, good news for Bernie.  The good ship Hillary is not going to be able to change direction very easily.  When she says things progressive, it is just does not fit.  Too much history to change over night.

      • FrankUnderwood says:

You're still with us?  I thought after the King v. Burwell yesterday, the freedom to marry decision today and the six-hour grand inquisiiton before the CO GOP exec committee today, you would have disappeared…….

        • BlueCat says:

He's here but he doesn't want to talk about anything making news nationally or locally. If you can't find anything you can spin as good news for righties just default to the usual and hope that tomorrow won't be such a horrible no good very bad day for the home team on all fronts from school board to state party to the Supremes.

    • notaskinnycook says:

This is what I wanted and expected Sanders to do- drag Clinton back toward the center and hopefully a ways over the line.

  3. Denver Yankee says:

One of the wealthiest, and most conservative, counties in the country is too cheap to pay for the education of its children.  Let the rest of the state taxpayers do it.  Note the reference in the story to budget cuts.

    • MADCO says:

It's more complicated- but you are still correct.

The other questions that should be addressed by DCSD why do so many of their students open enroll in Littleton or Cherry Creek?  Whatever happened to their voucher plan to pay for students to attend madrasas?

      • BlueCat says:

When my kid was in school those two districts were always neck and neck for first place. Is it a coincidence that those districts never had school boards trying to push religion as science or clean up our history?

  4. Progressicat says:

Same sex marriage now the law 5-4 (Kennedy).  Love to all my LGBTQ brothers & sisters.

    • davebarnes says:

Except for this pesky part of the Colorado Constitution: "Article II, Section 31. Marriages – valid or recognized. Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state."

      • Progressicat says:

State law is preempted by the decision.  It doesn't matter what the state constitution says.

        From the slip opinion:

Held: The Fourteenth Amendment requires a State to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State.

      • BlueCat says:

No longer operational just as old segregation laws still on state books are no longer operational.

      • FrankUnderwood says:

There's a lot of crap in the Colorado Constitution that is either archaic or outright nullified by federal law. IIRC, the notorious Amendment Two is still in there as Article II, Sec. 30(b) although the annotated version of the constitution cites Romer v. Evans as nullifying that. There's "official English" which is simply a xenophobic statement made by voters who fear people who speak a foreign language. There may still be reference to the 1976 Winter Olympics.

Having a state constitution with a lot of offensive and/or outdated shit in it is the price we pay for the facility with which voters can petition initiatives onto the ballot.

    • notaskinnycook says:

Thanks, PCat. It was funny this morning. I woke up at 3:30 am (!), Got up for a bit went back to bed and didn't wake up until 10:00. So I missed the announcement, darn it. But I've been reading everything I can find in the way of commentary since then. I'll read the decision tonight when I can do so uninterrupted. But ain't it grand that we won?

  5. Duke Cox says:

    great news….!

This has been a really good week….except for that TPP bullshit. Guess we can't have it all…

    • BlueCat says:

But a really bad sad week for righties everywhere and especially for Repugs here in Colorado what with the party and even rightie radio circular firing squad melt down.  And they can't even celebrate TPP without admitting they agree with that you know what in the White House. Poor babies! Wonder when the insurrection of over gay marriage rights that Huckabee predicted is going to start. And will they use the confederate battle flag?

      • Duke Cox says:

We here in GJ will be celebrating at Charlie Dwellingtons'  (1st and Main…when you are near it, you will hear it…)tonight. I will be joining City Councilman Chris Kennedy (saxophone) and the Tuesday Blues Band to honor and congratulate all our friends in the LGBT community…

The music will be good, the beer cold, and the fellowship extraordinary…

        Join us!!

  6. Canines says:

I wonder what they'll be talking about at the Western Conservative Summit starting today in Denver?

7 Presidential hopefuls attend Western Conservative Summit in Denver

Rick Santorum kicks off the Western Conservative Summit Friday. He'll speak to several hundred gathered to hear speeches from candidates and talk about the presidential race next year.

Also attending the conference are Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Rounding out the slate are businesswoman Carly Fiorina, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former New York Gov. George Pataki and neurosurgeon Ben Carson.  The candidates aren't debating; they'll make individual speeches making their case for the Oval Office.

I know this: I wish I had a nickel for every time someone will be uttering the phrase, "Take back America!"

  7. mamajama55 says:

Oh, Bluecat. We are going to have some juicy OutHouse tidbits for you soon. It rather looks as though Marilyn Marks began planning this debacle March 14 – the day House was elected as Chair. At least, that's the date a domain was registered for the petition she's gotten "OutHouse" signatures on.

    Stay tuned…

  8. DawnPatrol says:

If some of the hottest dance clubs aren't bustin' some righteous  "jiggery-pokery" moves this weekend, I'm gonna be deeply disappointed.

You do the jiggery-pokery and you turn yourself around. That's what it's all about. Only difference is, you never put anything in but your RIGHT foot (and then typically in your big fat mouth).
