Fresh off of his rousing speech at the DNC last night, Governor Brian Schweitzer made a surprise appearance at the Big Tent this morning. He was kind enough to talk to the bloggers about some of the issues.
On the West’s importance in this election:
“Well I think it’s pretty important, and in particular, when you take a place like Montana where a Democrat hasn’t gotten 50% running for president since Lyndon Baines Johnson, and you know that Barack Obama and John McCain are tied right now, and in places like Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada…who knows, McCain may lose Arizona, they know him down there you know.”
When asked what the most important issue is in the election:
“Energy. Absolutely energy. You know, these national press people, they apparently think that Americans don’t pay attention. We still remember that gas was $1.75 a gallon when the oil men seized power in the White House–and now it’s up to $4.00 a gallon. That is effectively the largest tax increase on the middle class in America in history, and people know that. They know that they’re hurting. And they know that we can’t drill our way to energy independence.”
I asked him about Governor Ritter and the New Energy Economy:
“Governor Ritter is a great governor, and he understands, just like the rest of America, that we can’t drill our way into energy independence. That’s why we need wind power, we need solar power–Colorado is a great place for Solar power.”

Schweitzer gave a dang good speech last night.
A lot of the speakers I have seen have been pretty bland, and I wondered how they got their opportunity to speak (as much as I thought Kathleen Sebelius would have been a good runningmate for Obama, last night was the first time I saw her speak. It was a let down).
But Gov. Schweitzer was one of the first good speakers. After that speech, I’d be more worried about an Obama/Schweitzer ticket then I am about the Obama/Biden ticket.
Also, Senator Casey did a dang good job too-as did Senator Clinton
Now you know why he was a sentimental favorite with some of the bloggers. I was one of them, I’m happy to admit.
Oh, and continue to be scared. Schweitzer will not likely be invisible this season, though he’s got a relatively tough race at home. And he’ll certainly be around in the future, making the Democratic bench all that much deeper.
I thought he was way ahead in the polls and facing nominal opposition.
And yes, I do see why some liked him so much, but he never had any interest in the job. If McCain wins, I wouldn’t be surprised if he runs-though he would have to derail Hillary
If he hadn’t been such a new governor I think he would have been a great, low degree of difficulty presidential candidate. He’s loved by progressives, elected in a mainly conservative state and is a hunting fishing good ‘ol boy. A western/heartland Governor with loads of down home charm and personality would have been an easy sell.
I remember he always looked and sounded kind of wimpy and tired when I’d see him on TV (I think he was on Meet the Press just before the election). But his convention speech was great.
As for Schweitzer vs. Biden, you haven’t actually seen Biden give the convention speech yet, so it’s not yet a fair comparison. Also, the job of VP isn’t JUST giving speeches; I could easily see Schweitzer becoming a little tiring after a while.
He
does
speak
kind
of
slowly.
part of the delivery !
Not only on speeches. Schweitzer has a much more moderate image then Biden.
Biden is a career politician and is far more left then the average American.
It’s going to be harder to sell Biden’s liberalism then it would be to sell Schweitzer.
but it’s going to be just as hard to sell Romneys liberalism as Bidens !
so I couldn’t use it, but when he was talking to us, Schweitzer gave a very interesting take on gun rights. Wouldn’t play well in the Democratic party, but could have brought Republicans into the fold.
Look for Brian Schweitzer to be involved in politics in the future. If Obama loses in November, I would vote for Brian in 2012 in a second. He has a bright future in the Democratic party.
“I’m from Montana, where we think gun control is hittin’ what you’re aimin’ at…”?
I met him a couple of months ago in Bozeman. He is as genuine as the day is long, and if he is not on national TV, his speeches are much funnier. By the way, I’m pretty sure he is a CSU grad…
actually he was hitting McCain on the gun issue because he voted for closing the gun show loophole. He said that NRA members in his state have told him they’d rather vote for Barr because he’d do a better job protecting their gun rights.
And you’re right, he is a CSU grad.
We won’t win as many people without that Western down-home image, perhaps, but we’ll pick up some who realize that Biden adds an extra pair of very talented hands to an Administration that’s going to have all of its hands full.
Obviously, it has yet to be seen how much of a problem this can be-but there are potential problems.
The blue collar working types in the swing states that Obama’s lead has been slipping in may have trouble relating to someone who has never held a real job. To someone who’s been in the United States Senate for their entire adult life. And to another Democrat on the ticket who is much more liberal then the average American.
The Democratic ticket is in serious danger of looking too elitist. Granted, that’s a serious danger for Republicans too-but the Clinton-Democrats that Obama needs are probably going to react differently to a man like McCain then they are the liberal pair that the Democrats have put up.
The fact that the Democrats are trying so hard to emphasize Biden’s “blue-collar background” and the unfortunate tragedy regarding his wife show’s that they recognize this fact too. The question is: which will people pay more attention to? His past, or his present?
As a political junkie, I’m interested in how this plays out. VP nominees don’t usually help a presidential candidate win, but they can certainly contribute to their losing.
Biden is going to be great, an attack dog with charm, command of the facts and a talent for one liners. Fine debater, pretty much the only presidential nomination drop out judged to have won a debate or two. He is also going to add to the high family man, decency quotient of the Democratic ticket. We Dems are mainly very, very pleased. And the Keating 5 guy isn’t going to get very far dredging up the old plagiarism charge either.
