Political Money Man, Bruce Benson, is working the phones again
this time looking for money for a new 501(c)4.
The committee is rumored to be in response to another issue committee (If C Wins You Lose), in which Marc Holtzman is one of the committees spokesmen. For the newest cause, Bruce is asking for a whopping $100,000.00 from fellow money men.
Bob Beauprez is believed to be the Spokesperson, and the cause is apparently Merit Pay for Teachers.
This isnt the first Shadow organization Benson has recently formed; hes also concurrently raising money for Headwaters and the Yes on C and D Committee. Oh and Bob Beauprezs Gubernatorial Campaign.
Republican Political Insiders are giggling at the turn of events; Benson seems to have finally forgiven Katy Atkinson for the PR nightmare more a decade ago (Atkinson was the CM for the Benson for Governor Campaign) and has managed to place himself into a difficult decision
whats his priority? C and D? Headwaters? Merit Pay? Or Beauprez?
For a guy who always picked his battles carefully, Benson certainly appears to be spreading himself awfully thin.

Red Hawk seems to be awful condescending in her comments about Benson considering she is supposed to be the Republican source on this website. Don’t mind the liberal tint from Alva and crew but cmon Red, you’re supposed to be on OUR team
I don’t see that. I see, instead, a good question. What is the priority for Republicans? We can’t give money to every one/every cause. Do we given money, on Benson’s suggestion, to support C and D? Or Beauprez? Or Headwaters? What about our local parties? El Paso County Party is nearly bankrupt and will probably close the offices before the new year. Can I give money to them? Do I have to give it to Headwaters?
The limit anyone can give, in a year, to the Party (State and County combined) is something like 12k. That goes fast if you’re a big money person. Give to the County First, then the State, then associated committees. That’s the way it should work. Not the other way around.
what?s his priority? C and D? Headwaters? Merit Pay? Or Beauprez?
That question seems like one of those “which one doesn’t belong” questions on an IQ test. Bringing up merit pay now without a context makes no sense.
However, DPS does have funding for the Professional Compensation agreement it has with teachers on the Nov 1 ballot. R’s might call it merit pay. Benson was (is?) the head of DPS’s foundation so he has a connection to the district and might have agreed to raise money for a media campaign to pass the measure. If they use Beauprez it would be for name recognition and a venue to get exposure that wasn’t C&D related. Otherwise bringing up “merit pay” doesn’t fit anything politically.
A strong move for Beauprez – but can he pull it off without looking like a Johnny Come Lately?
O.T.- C’mon Republicans – Who among you support the John Andrews position today in the News? Speak up. We want to know who you are.
El Paso,
The total you can give directly to the State and local parties is now a whopping $3k, with a maximum of $2.5k going to the State-level organization. You can probably give more through small-money PACs and such, but $3k is pretty much it now…
Candidates, PACs, 527s, and 501(c)x’s fall outside those limits.
What kind of split will develop in the GOP over this issue? Will everyone be hugging and making up after the Nov. 1 election, or will the split run too deep?
On the bright side, Benson, Owens, and others show that there is some hope for the GOP in this State yet… They understand that at a certain level, you have to stop cutting and start being responsible.
I thought the most telling thing was that Beauprez was offered an opportunity to film a commercial, as well, but turned it down. Bob – what’s up? Stop playing both ends against eachother – put your shoulder to the effort and FIGHT MAN! Are you opposed or not?!?!?
Does anyone have a link to the Andrews article mentioned above? Thanks.
