As the Denver Post reports:
Maybe it was too hot Sunday afternoon, or maybe they hadn’t gotten warmed up yet, but the tens of thousands of demonstrators that protest organizers promised would march through Denver turned out to be tens of hundreds.
Demonstrations began early Sunday and kept up a steady beat of marching, sign waving – and tying up downtown traffic. But through most of it, protesters were vastly outnumbered by police and, occasionally, even by those who came downtown just to watch the spectacle.
Lt. Ron Saunier, a Denver Police Department spokesman, said the number of protesters that actually showed up was nowhere near what groups had told city officials to expect.
Recreate 68 had projected that as many as 25,000 or even 50,000 people would participate in activities this week. Instead, a group estimated by police at 1,000 to 1,200 participated in a Recreate 68 anti-war march Sunday morning, with a much smaller group parading up Colfax Avenue later in the day…
A poll follows.

Let them have their protest, don’t try and stop them, don’t call any attention to them, and let their lunatic rants go unnoticed.
Had the Denver cops gone “Stanley Cup” on these freaks, then it would’ve encouraged more of them to come to Denver and start some crap.
Instead, they look lame and alone, and probably unwilling to do any other “protests” the rest of the week.
not instigating the protestors–unlike in Seattle during the WTO riots. It seemed like neither side wanted to be the first one to cross the line over to crazy.
Haven’t seen anything too crazy here in Lo-Do…yet.
just anger the explosive leaders in Recreate 68 and frustrate them into doing something stupid. We’ll see where this all goes.
We haven’t had a big protest movement since the record-setting antiwar protests of early 2003. Already in 2004, most of the antiwar people (who would have voted for Nader in 2000) were lining up behind Kerry, however unenthusiastically. So you didn’t see much protest in 2004 at the Democratic convention.
Now Obama is an even stronger antiwar candidate, so naturally the protest movement here has fizzled somewhat. The only reason anyone’s paid attention to it so far is because the organizers chose the dumbest and most provocative name possible. But the organizers don’t actually want any kind of violence.
I think the absolute worst thing that might happen is that some douchebag teenagers may go around in black masks and throw something through a Starbucks window, then run away. Of course, douchebag teenagers do things like that whether there’s a protest or not.
Have 2 teenage daughters and one recently out of the teen years, I’ve found most teenagers are decent people. They may not be using the brain 100% of the time, but neither do they do anything too stupid. And I can’t think of a single one I would call a douchebag.
You apparently are willing to label them all that way.
rather than “teenagers.”
Of course most teenagers are decent people. I’m talking about the tiny minority of ones who do stupid stuff like breaking windows.
This is by far the most dishonest thing I’ve ever seen you write. You can’t possibly believe it.
are like the kid last Friday who rode his bicycle real, real slowly across the road right in front of me at the stop sign. Annoyed the hell out of me and a few other drivers but apparently impressed his girlfriend. Such an animal does exist.
(the bike at the stop sign.)
The homeless, low level government employees that can only do what they are told, having no authority to make their own decisions.
Once I realized this many years ago, a lot of daily interactions made sense.
Maybe it will help me take it easier in the future. Or maybe I could just get one of those goo guns 🙂
McCain slogan ’08.
there are many, many teenagers to whom the adjective “douchebag” does indeed apply (not a majority my any measure). The ones that have stolen the political signs from my yard, the ones who insist on talking on their cellphones in the movie theater while the movie is running are two variety that immediately come to mind.
In most cases, they have douchebag parents that are not doing a very good job of parenting.
I guarantee that 99.9 percent of teens, if asked, could name at least one other teen they would consider a douchebag. Same is true for 99.9 percent of adults.
After all, what’s IN the douchebag is clean and fresh and reminds one of butterflies and meadows – if the commercials are to be believed.
Douchebags deserve a fair shake.
“Ask not what your douchebag can do for you. Ask what you can do for your douchebag.”
And the search yields absolutely nothing of any interest or use.
Damn you!
that you just spent a summer’s eve mapping the origins of America’s favorite insult?
The look like dinosaurs. Or worse, like Republicans.
I’m not saying that there aren’t legitimate reasons to make noise. Just that the demonstrators should bein Minneapolis next week.
I don’t really get the reason liberals are protesting the Democratic convention… the ones they should be pissed at are the Republicans. W.T.F.
LB supports imperialistic nation building, like Iraq, that has cost the taxpayer between $1-$3T depending on who you believe, while more children go to sleep hungry than eight years ago, our infrastructure is falling apart, few can afford healthcare for themselves or their family….you get the idea.
The estimate is between 95,000 and 600,000 innocent civilians dead in Iraq,. Is LB telling me that if Colorado were the invaded state, and 10’s and perhaps 100’s of thousand innocents were killed, he wouldn’t have the courage to take to the streets in protests?
I am proud to be an American with Free Speech.
what’s “imperialistic” about all US combat troops being out of Iraq by 2011, and Iraqi government control of their oil after we’ve spent all that money on the war?
I’d love to get your take on my response to your specific questions regarding Obama’s platform, too.
I hope you enjoyed boating yesterday.
…is the fact that the troops are in Iraq in the first place. Duh.
because a Republican is in the White House. As soon as a Democrat is in it will stop being imperialist. That is how it works, didn’t you know?
Than Jumbo’s answer.
I was looking for an honest reply.
BUT, in your defense, you understand SPIN really well.
I understand the classic definition of imperialism quite well.
The imperial power is supposed to gain something from its conquest. What have we gained in Iraq, particularly if combat troops are out after 2011?
love and respect of the Iraqi people? They’re erecting a gigantic statue of Bush as we speak!
On the back of a Coors Banner? Gotta love it
until you pointed it out.
Hilarious!!!!
I’m Pete Coors and I do not approve of this message.
But thanks for thwe free publicity, turn your sign around please…
You know that nearly all of the bloggers on this site find that sign utterly reprehensible.
I just wanted to point out the ridiculous nature of most of these folks.
The funniest thing about it is that Al-Sadr would glady kill them if he could.
But they’d deserve it, and happily take their punishment for being born into THE WORST COUNTRY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!!!!!
when it comes to good governace, respect for human rights, non-violence and religious tolerance Muqtada Al Sadr always comes to mind, and should be emulated for his good works in all those areas. Spot on.
Get your head out of the bong guys. Total friggin’ idiots.
You imperialist!
fight the power, etc. etc.
Wait, you ARE the man!
I checked “still early…” but my feeling all along was that this was going to fizzle.
For one thing, so many in the target age group for this sort of thing are very excited about Obama. The Democratic party isn’t the incumbent party during an unpopular war WITH A DRAFT. Denver, its mayor and police are nothing like Chicago, Mayor Daley and his police in ’68.
The whole atmosphere is nothing like it was when I was a teen back then and every social issue you could name, the war, the draft, civil rights, generational rebellion, free love, sex drugs and rock and roll were all boiling over at the same time. It was a truly incendiary time with the largest generational cohort ever at its core.
2008, not so much, in spite of real and deep dissatisfaction and sincere opposition to government policies. Bottom line, ’68 will never be recreated any more than any other unique point in history. If 2008 surpasses ’68 as a watershed in American history, it will be because it was the year we elected our first minority President, knock wood.
My oldest daughter went to hear Nancy Pelosi talk and the cops had to clear out a bunch of Code Pink protestors.
And if Code Pink think’s they’re helping – the response of my daughter and her friend, both very liberal democrats, was that the protestors were a bunch of jerks.
They did like Nancy’s talk.
Most of Code Pink went ’round the bend a few years back. Makes me wonder if they weren’t infiltrated by a COINTELPRO type operation.
It must have Cheney’s fingerprints on it somewhere, since it doesn’t fit the paradigm.
I don’t actually think that, but they’re so far gone at this point it makes you wonder. You do know that actually happened in our history, though, don’t you?
Code Pink started as a vocal but productive group; the visible aspects of their membership have become so poor at advocating their position over time that they’d be better off not advocating at all. Unfortunately, that’s not too uncommon among die-hard activists on any side of any issue.
Were deranged from the outset. Failure was just a matter of time.
“Wouldn’t it be great if there was an organization whose sworn duty was to uphold the Constitution?”
I think most of them are from Boulder…
i have been monitoring what has been happening.
Civic Center Park was just that this morning very civil.
Only incidenti I witnessed today was a small scuffle on the 16th street mall between Police and some Anti-Abortion demonstrators. And not much of a scuffle at that.
Interesting that the only problems I am aware of have come from the Right-Wing Anti Abortion crowd and not the lefties that were supposed to be the problem
…at 16th & Cali, some dustups between anti-homosexual loud-mouths and the sane people walking by. Also, there were some pro-McCain people demonstrating near 16th and Cali. Coincidence?
And then some young woman asked me if I knew where the “homeless people” were? I was nonplussed. Was it my week to watch the homeless? Damn, it wasn’t on my Outlook Calendar!
It appeared that that they wanted some kind of confrontation – they were really pushing for it.
I wonder if for some reason they were to get arrested for for something related to their first amendment expression that they would accept help from the ACLU?
inquiring minds want to know.
Maybe they are trying to cause a problem hoping it’s reported as “riot at DNC” as opposed to “Republican riot.” If they get the right headline it helps the Republicans.
to an altercation between police and protesters. Come to think of it, I didn’t see very many protesters at all. Mostly people being very polite and civil who were handing out pamphlets.
In fact, it was pretty quiet today (at least in Lo-Do when I was walking back.) Where are all the MASSIVE protests that were sure to disrupt the city? I rode the light rail back at 5:00 and it was no busier than any other day. We still have three more days, but I think we could be looking at a completely sane, civil DNC.
and, as I got close with my Obama pin, got yelled at by a group of pathetic PUMAS from California. They carried Hillary signs but when asked why they weren’t supporting Hillary’s candidate who stands with her on all major issues they switched to it’s not about Hillary. It’s about the democratic process.
They insisted that Clinton delegates are being locked in their hotel rooms and pressured to switch to Obama. They railed against the fact that they were refused a secret ballot although conventions are always all about the most public, noisy, enthusiastic support, nothing secret. They even said it was Obama, not McCain, who would be just like Bush. As I said, they were from California.
I had to walk all the way from California (not the state) to Union station because of religious right demonstrators forcing a temporary shut down of the shuttle. Later, on my way home on the Light Rail I heard two women talking about how they had arrested people left and right at two “religious” demonstrations. I suppose these were the anti-choice and anti-gay demonstrations referred to here and that I saw earlier.
Meantime the newspapers have practically been making fun of how well behaved the anti-war protesters are, stopping for traffic signals and staying on the sidewalk. Go figure. Polite lefties and unruly Christians (at least they say they are). Not very 68ish.
…I find it very interesting. Most Clintons delegates, I believe, are sensible people who will vote for Obama….given that there is no real difference between their policies. But a vocal few…well they scare me. For what they say about this country as much as anything. [shudder]
I think they represent a VERY few among HRC supporters. I know many women who were ardent HRC supporters but they are all on board with Obama now and don’t understand those who claim to be HRC supporters but refuse to support the candidate who agrees with her on all the important issues vs the candidate who is against both HRC and Obama on those very same issues. For most Colorado HRC supporters it’s a no brainer.
Makes you wonder why the PUMAS supported HRC in the first place. And how much sense does it make to carry a Hillary sign then refuse to join her or her party in supporting Obama by saying its not about Hillary?
Back during the primary, there was a lot of turmoil in the blogs. Some old-time posters who everyone thought they knew grew an extra head and sprouted bat wings and green scales; the level of racist hatred in the most ardent PUMAs was astounding. Against some things, substantially shared visions of the future pale and fade into the faintest of illusions.
The 2 papers are reporting on some pepper spray and arrests at Civic Center a bit after 7 PM Monday evening. That’s about 1/2 hour after I walked around the park to see what was happening. It was very calm when I was there, although there were lots of cops and some people that had the “activist” look about them milling around.
Glad I left when I did.
The Denver Post’s livecam feed showed protesters still there about 45 minutes ago. LOTS of police presence, but it looks like things calmed back down for one reason or another. I heard one lady yelling ‘Fascists’ at the cops, so it wasn’t entirely without tension.
Day 1 was a huge success–for Denver, for Colorado, for the Democrats, and even for the Republicans.
