Get More Smarter on Wednesday (May 27)

Get More SmarterThe last day of school is almost here. The last day of work…not so much. It’s time to Get More Smarter with Colorado Pols. If you think we missed something important, please include the link in the comments below (here’s a good example).

TOP OF MIND TODAY…

► Democrat Morgan Carroll hasn’t said anything recently about her plans to run for Congress in CD-6, but that hasn’t stopped Republicans from going bonkers over the idea.

► Certain undocumented immigrants can now apply for a driver’s license in Colorado; the much-discussed program finally got underway on Tuesday, though there were a few technical hiccups.

Get even more smarter after the jump…

IN CASE YOU ARE STANDING NEAR A WATER COOLER…

► The Colorado Independent tags along to a “constituent meeting” with Sen. Laura Waters Woods (R-Arvada), where she tells supporters that Common Core education standards start the teaching of U.S. History with the Civil War:

The Senator’s most-lamented measure was known as “the mom’s bill,” which would have removed Colorado from federal Common Core K-12 education standards by the fall of 2016.

“It’s garbage,” Woods said of the standards. “It’s debunking American exceptionalism. It’s a rewriting of history. They start American history at the Civil War. So we’re not even going to talk about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights or the Declaration of Independence.” [Pols emphasis]

Yeah, um, no. We don’t even need to look this up to know that this statement is complete nonsense. Does Woods actually believe that history teachers just skip ahead to the 16th President of the United States?

► Governor John Hickenlooper talked police reform at the State Capitol yesterday in signing his name to a couple of new bills. Meanwhile, in Cleveland, police officers won’t be allowed to hit people in the head with their guns anymore

► Senator Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) is having trouble getting people to buy-in to his over-the-counter contraception plan.

► State Treasurer Walker Stapleton will visit all 64 counties in Colorado as part of some ridiculous political gimmick. Nevertheless, we can’t help but marvel at this line from Stapleton:

“As I begin my second term, it is important to step out of the office, hit the road and continue to listen to the needs of people across our state.”

…said the guy who doesn’t actually bother going to his office already

► The American Conservatives of Color will not attend the annual Juneteenth festivities in Denver on account of irony.

► Denver Democrat Erin Bennett will run for State Senate in SD-31 (Sen. Pat Steadman is term-limited). We’re still on the fence as to whether her website, BennettforSenate.com, is a good idea in the same year in which U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet will be running for re-election.

OTHER LINKS YOU SHOULD CLICK

► Remember, if this man tries to give you political advice, just slowly back away.

► It will cost you up to 15% more to ride public transportation after rate hikes were approved by RTD last night.

► Former Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, now the mayor-elect in Colorado Springs, says he wants to raise taxes. Suthers tells the Colorado Springs Independent that he will not run for Governor or U.S. Senate (not that anyone was recruiting him).

ICYMI

► It seems that former Florida governor and 2016 Presidential hopeful Jeb Bush may be full of shit after all.

► So, apparently there are still some places in Texas where you are not allowed to carry a gun. Texas lawmakers are rushing to change this problem.

  1. Does Woods actually believe that history teachers just skip ahead to the 16th President of the United States?

Well, she believes Man co-existed with dinosaurs and the Canyonlands were put there by God to try to trick us and thereby test our faith ( they appear to be much older than 6,000 years). So…why wouldn't she believe that all those commie teachers are trying to subvert our education system AND our constitution…

    damned socialists….

    1. Let's give What-hers the benefit of the doubt for one moment, apparently common core history will still begin 27 Presidents before Jebby's studies??  It's an incremental improvement in GOPer understanding . . .

  2. That's honestly too bad . . .

. . . with soon-to-be ex-Senator Bennett so obviously hell bound on giving up his seat to some GOPer, it would have been kinda' nice for it to be one of the few saner ones, like Suthers . . .
