It is interesting how the split among Republicans at the federal level over how much to spend on New Orleans reconstruction – Sen. Brownback saying Louisiana residents should foot most of the bill versus federal dollars, etc… – mimics the battle over assumption – the federal government assuming the Revolutionary War debt of the colonies, with Madison insisting states pay their own and the first true test of Hamilton’s abilities as Sec. of Treasury – that nearly doomed the early Republic.
It is unfortunate that the President is driving this nation (and my children and grandchildren’s bank accounts) further into debt with no real plan to reign in spending. Wasn’t this the same President who promised smaller government (before ballooning it to record size), a humble foreign policy (before alienating nearly every ally of the U.S. i.e. the Downing St. memo) and criticized Clinton for nation building (before taking on the most massive nation building since the Marshall Plan). To top it off, his plan for New Orleans is primarily to save his own poll numbers as evidenced by his #1 political operative, one of the most corrupt players in D.C., the Rovinator.
This sucks…
You know, I am really frustrated and disappointed with Jon Caldera. As a tried and true Republican, I think there are ways to agrue against C and D without resorting to a plan of lying and purposeful “fact bending”. His tactics bring ridicule to conservatives in general. If you can’t make an honest, straightforward argument, then backoff and let others who are intelligent enough to do it. Campaigning doesn’t have to mean “incindiary obfuscation” in order to win. Jon, get your little dictionary out to see what that means…Geez, at least Fred Holden is honest.
oops! I almost purosely misled poor Jon…
“IncEndiary obfuscation”
It looks like the government knew Diebold voting machines could be remotely accessed and the votes retabulated. Now didn’t they use those in Ohio?
http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/bulletins/SB04-252.html#diebold
Mad,
I thought Caldera was actually a libertarian?
I agree with you Mad. I’m sick of Caldera and John Andrews screwing this up just because they want to see their names in the paper more often. I’m completely against c&d but I’m really tired of Caldera lying and Andrews just talking stupid. Can’t we get some real leadership over there.
Conspiracy,
No, they didn’t use much in the way of Diebold in Ohio, despite Diebold’s CEO’s residence there and his promise to “deliver Ohio for Bush” in 2004. ESS (Sen. Chuck Hagel’s “former” company) is responsible for most of the vote-counting in Ohio. Not that all of the top three vote-counting companies (Diebold, Sequoia, and ESS) don’t have similar problems with their equipment; Diebold’s is just the most egregious.
Juicy rumor time folks…
The reason Katy went off on Holtzman so bad in yesterday’s paper was that she interviewed for the Holtzman Campaign Manager position and Holtzman obviously didn’t give it to her… Decided to hire the Virginia flack instead, ha- ha.
Now this did come from a friend who is supporting Holtzman, so buyers beware for folks hoping to jump on the little nugget of info… But then again, I don’t think Katy or anyone in the Benson/Owens cabal are going to let something like this slip out.
If true though, I think Beauprez could throw his hat in the ring with the anti-C&D crowd without getting run through the mud.
Also, I don’t think Katy has run a candidate race since the Benson GOV race in the 90’s. She has stuck to Referenda campaigns.
With her interviewing with Holtzman, does this signal that she is looking at returning to candidate work? She did great against the stupid idea last year, and is making sandwiches out of soup with C&D (still hope she loses though)… Maybe she wants to get back to running candidates again… and Beauprez hasn’t hired a Campaign Manager yet has he?
VOTE NO ON C&D!
For those of us long in the tooth on Colorado Politics. Katy will not be Beauprez’s campaign manager for a number of reason not the least is her and Shari fought like cats and dogs on the Benson campaign and I don’t see those two ever working on a candidate campaign together again.
THE Bush Speech —
Objectively, Bush provided a marvelous speech that could have (was) been typecast by either a Democrat or a Republican. However, the ideas of rebuilding New Orleans doesn’t necessarily create a “grand” ideology. The idea of usinge the “Marshall Plan” in and around New Orleans has significant problems. As I foresee it, we are creatures of making the same mistakes over and over again, not receiving the message until it either kills us, or we stumble and run into a immovable object, forced to change because we have no other choice. The Republicans will continue to try their embrace of oil companies, noting that President Bush visited an Oil Company in New Orleans just before he gave his impassioned speech. While I embrace the “Marshall Plan” in the Gulf of Mexico, including the soon to be ravaged (time and time again) hurricane seasons of the future, we should also recognize that we don’t need an armed military to do the job. We should “privatize” the operation as much as possible, but we should also give those jobs to companies that are not of the “Haliburton” kind. The Republicans love to keep the money from the little guy, the Democratic Party. The differences between the war in the Gulf (Middle East) and in the USA, is that we should have been able to spend far less in a daily 2 Billion dollar expense, with “GOOD” leadership, something that the Bush Administration absolutely screwed up, because of his Oil mentality, his desire for revenge, his immoral attempt to change the face of the Muslim world, while 100’s of thousands are innocently killed in the process. Indeed, NO WMD were found in Iraq, none will be found in New Orleans, except for a bunch of old blues players that have no running water, little or no help for 6 days. Ooops, I guess you were God Mr. President, and you took the 7th day off on the first day. Excuse me.
I commend you on your speech, it is wonderful to see investment into a bleek poor portion of America, whereby, you could have done the similiar things in the Middle East, but the ideals of controling that part of the world most certainly wasn’t a plan that included negotiation or a recognition that the oil in the Gulf (Middle East) was their’s and not our’s.
HOWEVER, if we rebuild these GULF’s, then we must rebuild with a progressive approach. We need self-sustaining buildings that utilize the energy from the sun (unlimited) and systems of improved water, sanitation and most certainly an investment into levys that protect against another flood. Scientists predict that Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Lousiana, Texas and other coastal areas will be under 3 to 6 feet more of water within a few decades, because of global warming. My question, when do we begin an energy program that changes from our burning of fossil fuels that contributes to the accelerated problem of Global Warming?
IF we do not change over quickly, we will see vastly bigger and bigger hurricanes and global weather changes. IF I were a smart investor, individual, I would build those buildings in New Orleans and on every ocean community 100’s of feet high, so you can burn even more oil, ruining our natural environment, to the point of extinguished humanity.

What happen to Hawaii in all of this, “Hello, Oahu? Are you there, hello?”
I just heard of a Republican idea to use hydro-jacks, to raise up the Hawaiian island chain, 125 feet into the air, so that it will not be under water … how much will that cost?
I can’t seem to find a picture of this Katy person. None on her website. She seems to have gone ballistic on this pig thing. Is she an oinker?
Just Wondering.
The RMN had a piece saying that unemployment in Colorado is down to 5% from 5.5% in August 2004. The national rate is down to 4.9 from 5% in July.
They go on to say that this is the lowest level of unemployment nationally since August 2001.

Yes on C and D, no on E, Do it for Hugo!
YES on C and D, NO on E.
I read the first line of Peter’s post and got so bored I had to go take a nap. I can’t imagine anyone actually reading the whole thing.
Peter’s posts are the perfect example of literary masturbation. He’s the only one participating, it makes him fell good, but produces no results.
Keep it up Peter old buddy!
We?re still laughing at you.
I fear for the future of the Republic if Peter ever comes to understand the power of brevity.
Once again … Bush proves that he is going to help his RICH friends, without any thought toward removing the reduction of Federal taxes on the Rich … indeed, it is objectionable by his measure to offer any government taxes from the richer Americans for the poorer ones … Bush simply doesn’t understand economics, nor does he read his Bible … a Christian Bush is not.
(CBS/AP) President Bush on Friday ruled out raising taxes to pay the massive costs of Gulf Coast reconstruction, saying other government spending must be cut to pay for a recovery effort expected to swell the national debt by $200 billion or more.
Hours earlier, Bush vowed to help rebuild the region with an eye toward wiping out the persistent poverty and racial injustice that exist there.
“As we clear away the debris of a hurricane, let us also clear away the legacy of inequality,” he said at a prayer service at Washington National Cathedral in memory of Hurricane Katrina’s victims. Polls suggest a majority of Americans believe the president should have responded quicker to Katrina, and high percentages of blacks tell pollsters they believe race played a role in the slow response by all levels of government.
Race may be playing a role in who is getting rebuilding work as well, reports CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson.
Although FEMA has handed out $9 billion, many local businesses in New Orleans, including black morticians, say they didn’t get body recovery work. When they complained, FEMA asked for a list of minority businesses. The NAACP’s local President provided one but says he hasn’t heard back, Attkisson reports.
“The majority of people who perished were African American,” said Danatus King, New Orleans NAACP president. “Now it would just seem right that minority businesses would be involved in the process.”
