        BUT…today is Earth Day and I am going to try to ignore all those fools who make this planet less inhabitable instead of more so….

      1. He voted to repeal Obamacare, he cleared out a pizza restaurant, and he’s warned the world about the ISIS camps in Mexico. For a wing nut, that’s a productive four months.

        Oh, and he’s replaced Doug Lamborn as the biggest embarrassment in the CO House delegation.

            CD5 and its Super Conservative Christian voters aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. These voters might now be considered old school: they have a long-term conservatism slowly cultivated by large social institutions down here that remain at the top of the Republican thought food chain (Focus, New Life, AFAcademy, etc……).

            Compared to the current crop of Tea-induced craziness that Buck’s relying on, Buck’s voters need that constant anti-guvmint agitation and Obama’s going to confiscate yet gunzzz paranoia so they remember to vote next time.

        1. I believe the qualification to win a Darwin Award is that you remove yourself from the gene pool in an interesting way, not strictly that you kill yourself. If he managed to shoot off both of his testicles I think he’d qualify.

    then why can’t Colorado elect a governor who enjoys a glass of clean water every now and then?

      1. Me, too…(sigh). I filled in the little arrow by Hick’s name, and will probably do the same for Bennet, however reluctantly. But it would be good to have someone primary Bennet, or at least mount a decent third-party campaign against him.

        These DINOs take their Democratic base entirely for granted, saving their loyalty for their corporate funders. 

        2. If Bennet doesn’t do something to raise his Colorado profile and popularity, filling in that little arrow reluctantly may not be enough. I bet ten times as many people know at least something about potential opponent Coffman and his association with vet issues (I know but perception is what matters) than could even name Bennet as one of our Senators. I bet new Senator Gardner has better name rec. Bennet pretty much went to DC and fell off Colorado radar. He’s going to have to start fixing that or do us all a favor and get out of the way in time for another more Colorado connected charismatic Dem candidate to start building a campaign. Bennet’s already on the most vulnerable list. I believe his placement there is pretty accurate. 

  8. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s (R) economic “experiment” obviously hasn’t gone well. The combination of debt downgrades, weak growth, and disastrous state finances have created an ongoing disaster in one of the nation’s reddest states.

    Complicating matters, conditions aren’t improving. The state AP reported yesterday that Kansas is projecting the state will generate $187 million less in tax revenue than expected over the next year. The report is slightly worse than the projections Kansas officials faced a month ago, which were slightly worse than the projections the month before that.

    Looking further ahead offers little relief. The unexpected shortfall is poised to get worse: the same projections show tax collections nearly $300 million below expectations through mid-2017.

    The AP report added that the latest fiscal forecast is “likely” to force the Republican-dominated state government to “consider larger tax increases than they had expected to balance the state budget.” That’s true, though as Max Ehrenfreund explained yesterday, who’ll pay shoulder the burden makes a big difference.One thing they’re not considering: asking the wealthy to chip in. Instead, in a legislature that last week barred welfare recipients from using their benefits to go swimming or watch movies, the proposals that look most likely to succeed are sales and excise taxes that would be paid disproportionately by Kansas’s poor and working class. […]

    People who make less are more vulnerable to increases in sales and excise taxes, since they spend more of their money buying basic goods and services they need to get by. This is especially the case in Kansas, where food is subject to sales tax. Kansans can receive a tax rebate for their food purchases, but those who make nothing or too little to owe income tax aren’t eligible. They pay the sales tax on food in full.

    It’s best to call this what it is: a redistribution of wealth, from the bottom up.

      1. The Koches had to issue a clarification today. They have narrowed the list of Republican presidential candidates whom they find acceptable down to five (Jebby, Walker, Cruz, Paul and Rubio…..sorry Ben Carson, Piyush Jindal, Chris Christie, Blanche DuBois Graham, Huck and Frothy Mix Santorum), and plan to spend money promoting all five in the early primaries. 

        Here’s $$$ saving suggestion:  why don’t they keep their wallets closed unless one of the unacceptable ones starts to show some signs of life, then crush that one’s candidacy like a bug?

        1. I don’t think saving money is at the forefront of their strategy.  Recall, they’d rather pay $400 million in penalties instead of investing in maintaining the safety and integrity of their pipelines and equipment (see Environmental and Safety Record in link above).

          But since all 11 candidates have enthusiastically kissed the Koch ring, it must be devastating to the lower tier 6 to be deemed toxic waste by the experts in, well, toxic waste.

          Also shows that even a “moderate” like Jebby pretends to be is actually just another bought and paid for puppet, and willingly if given the chance, will sell out Americans in favor of his two benefactors.

          Given the list — Jebby, Walker, Cruz, Paul and Rubio — either the Kochs have broadened their ideological beliefs, or there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference among the bunch.  I’m betting on the latter.

    2. I suppose that depends upon your definition of the phrase “gone well.” If your objective is to become something akin to Somalia (no taxes and theocratic nut cases running around loose), then the Kansas experiment is coming along nicely.

    3. He wants to tax the HMOs.  But Aetna isn’t having it.  They’re saying insurance policies would go through the roof in KS.  Poor Brownback.  He might (shudder, shudder) have to accept Medicaid subsidies through Obamacare to fund some of the ginorme Kansas deficit.

    4. The consequences of Tea Party budgets….

      Six Kansas school districts have announced that they need to close early this year due to budget shortfalls originating in state funding cuts. A court has ruled that the Kansas state government is not living up to its constitutional educational funding requirements (remember that lawsuit here in Colorado?) and needs to pony up at least $500m more in funds to the state’s public schools. But the legislature and governor aren’t planning to do that.

      Down in Louisiana, Gov. Jindal’s proposed budget has no fewer than 20 state colleges and universities preparing bankruptcy documentation. Even LSU says they’ll need to file for protection if Jindal’s budget goes through. Way to pick an idol in Gov. Brownback, Gov. Jindal!

      In Florida, Gov. Scott has filed suit against the Federal government to force it to extend a pilot program that would help the state fill a gap in Medicaid spending caused in part by a planned series of tax cuts. But they won’t take Federal money for Medicaid expansion through Obamacare, because – well, I’m guessing it’s because the nickname for it has the word ‘Obama’ in it. Not coming up with the money will probably lead to the shuttering of (more) Florida hospitals in the next fiscal year.

  11. Taking a cue from Tom Cotton and his posse writing to the ayatollahs, the state senate takes up SJM15-002 which memorializes the legislature views on negotiations with Iran. The sponsors are Lambert, Lundberg, Balmer, Cadman in the senate, and Mini Timmy, Humphrey and Dr. Joshi in the house.

  13. Denver “2015” Auditors Election

      O’Brien was approved by the Colorado Legislator to be the State Auditor 12 years. He has guided a large department of people to conduct 750 State audits. Saving the state $200,000,000. He has been a licensed CPA in the state since 1974.  Look at his web site, seeing all of these facts, O’Brien has the leadership and experience for the best auditor for our city.                                                                                                 I don’t see any Auditing or Accounting experience in the background of Nevitt.

    He keeps saying “none of the others have”.  Noting Nevitt has been on the City Council for 8 years, how can he conduct an audit of the Council with out it being a conflict of interest? He has accepted money from devlopers that are chosen by the Council.   

      Watching the two debates, Nevitt stumbles his way with his answers to the questions. He clearly has no idea how to run this office. Anyone wonder how Nevitt has all of this backing from the Politcials in this city when this guy has no experience of any  kind of experience in Auditing field?

    O’brien is running as an Independent and doesn’t want to be associated with and party. No favors owed or expected from anyone.
