The soap opera that is the Republican race for governor took yet another turn today. Just one day after Marc Holtzman’s camp coined the phrase “Both Ways Bob,” Bob Beauprez’s campaign announced that it has filed a legal request with the Colorado Secretary of State over alleged illegal campaign contributions. Here’s the press release:
Gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman has skirted campaign finance laws by taking an illegal contribution from his father to put himself on television, the Beauprez campaign said today in a legal request filed with the Colorado Secretary of State.
“A political ad featuring Marc, paid for by Marcs dad, and controlled by one of Marcs statewide campaign chairmen, in an obvious attempt to raise his name I.D., doesnt even approach passing the sniff test,” said Beauprez campaign spokesman John Marshall. “Sadly, this episode just casts more doubt upon Marcs well-documented ethical problems.”
The document filed by the Beauprez campaign requests, due to the Holtzman ads obvious flaunting of Amendment 27 and campaign contribution limits, that the Secretary issue a legal opinion and/or emergency rules. Colorado law says a candidate may only accept $1,000 from any one person to promote their candidacy. Holtzmans father and finance chairman have contributed at least $150,000 toward his television ad.
“This isnt about Referenda C&D – the record is clear that Congressman Beauprez and Marc both oppose the measures,” said Marshall. “This is about Marc dodging the law and searching for loopholes. Marc should do the right thing and remove himself from the ads.”
Campaign manager John Marshall did all the talking in this release, just as Holtzman campaign manager Dick Leggitt did all the talking in yesterday’s release. At this rate, the people with the real bounce in name ID are going to be Marshall and Leggitt. Maybe they can run for governor.

Scott Gessler bags a pretty good sized client after leaving Hale / Hackstaff. Does he still have those cool clock cufflinks.
So, lemme get this straight, it was okay for Bob Beauprez to do it in 2002, but now that someone else is doing it, it’s not???
You can’t have it Both Ways Bob!
Seems to me Marshall wants to get his name ID up in the 3rd because he did a horrible job during the Welcher campaign. Maybe Marshall should go suck on a baby’s bottle because right now he is acting like one.
Republicans suing Republicans! Yee haw! And, we aren’t even in primary season proper yet.
Now, if Beauprez were to withdraw, would the suit have to be dismissed for mootness? Or could other candidates be substituted?
Just like it is OK for Marc to make a career/millions out of taking pork/development loans for Eastern Europe, and then turn around and say pork is bad.
Marshall has always been (and is still) a lap dog for the governor. Now he’s dragged Beauprez into the fight. This smells of Bill, and Bill’s desperation to not go down with C and D. Welcome abord Gigi! The first test for her now comes; is she blindly loyal to Bill, too?
“Well, since O’Donnell complained about me doing it – I have to complain about Marc doing it, too. That’s how it works, ya know.”
Note to Marshall: It’s “the smell test”. The “sniff test” is something entirely different. Dork.
MH hasn’t broken any law – pure and simple. BB looks desperate with this move. All he’s doing is trying to muzzle the only committee with commercials on the air. So in turn, he’s really HELPING the C and D camapign. Nice move, there, Republicans.
I love it! Caldara a big fat liar, and now GOoPs eatting their own.
I could read this stuff forever.
The BB campaign must be getting desperate. They throw everything at Mark and he doesn’t even flinch.
Speaking of people taking money from big corporations, anyone see what that idiot Hillman said today…….
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/home/article/0,1299,DRMN_1_4113826,00.html
Hillman used to be strong. Now he’s caved. Go figure.
That’s almost as bad as when Hillman wrote the Letter to the Editor in the Denver Post claiming that 2nd hand smoke really wasn’t bad for you…..
I have no idea what the stink about Beauprez in 2002 is, but I’m sure Holtzman has no idea either he just can’t handle the truth himself.
First he’s the victim of political spin-doctoring, then his volunteers screwed up, oh and it was his printer who really wanted him to look tall next to the President. Now it’s Beauprez’s fault his daddy back home in Pennsylvania is trying to bail him out?
What a loser.
Idiot republicans are killing themselves! It is wonderful! VOTE YES on C and D.
Why is the Beauprez team going after Holtman? Shouldn’t they let the Yes on C people do that? I support Bob and I support no on c but this lawsuit makes the Beauprez camp look really petty.
Well, it is getting really clear monkeys are running the show for the “vote no” campain. Yesterday some of them vandalized my “vote yes” sign in front of my house! They cut it in pieces with a knife. Amazing… back to the ice age? I put up a new sign this morning, and guess what? This time they spray painted “NO” on the “vote yes” sign! What is next? Burn my house down????????????????????
VOTE yes on c and d.
All i can say is bye bye Marc, and Hello to the greatest thing Colorado has ever known, Governor Beauprez!!!!
BB is just a lapdog for the other $BB. Now that BO is going out he needs another biatch. That’s right Beauprez is a SQUISH!

Holtzman reminds me of Gray Davis.

Hey why not some congrats for Scott Gessler?
He should pass out those cufflinks with the clocks in them at his office opening. Scotty landing big Bob as a client. Way to go Scotty and Bob made a wise choice indeed
Um, DemAreDumb (I won’t even bother with that – too easy) you should know that Gessler has done lots of work for BB and the CO GOP in the past. “landing big Bob” is not news.
And I will concur with a lot of the postings above – the only reason that this is happening is a worried BB campaign. If Holtzman were such a non-threat, do you really think this suit would be happening?
Gessler represented big name Reps only because he was part of the old Tymkovich firm.
For him to land this big a fish is a good sign for his new firm. Or, else it shows that Bob
B shopped the case around and no one else would take it because the law is probably against Bib Bob. But, what about them clock cufflinks?
Where can average people buy a pair?
The BB team is trying to take off the only commercial opposing c and d. That’s committment, for sure.
I like Beauprez a lot, and although I can understand him going after Holtzman for doing the commercial tha Primary is nearly a full year away. Plenty of time for Bob to make up any name ID he loses to MH.
All Bob is doing right now is killing the only effective anti-C&D ad on the air. It make me worry about his committment to the anti-C&D cause.
Kinda like all of BB’s endorsers coming from the Pro-C&D camp….
Why didn’t BB just do the commercial with MH if he was that worried about the name ID stuff?
I think BB just didn’t want to piss off Owens/Benson/Atkinson.
You can’t have it both ways Bob!
Question for all you hacks,
Does an average voter even care about this? I can tell you the answer but I’m sure you’ll disagree. See, I actually have a job outside of politics and my co-workers, who are consistent voters, either don’t know who the people running for governor are or don’t care about all the bickering when I tell them about it.
MH and BB (and their staffers for that matter) can argue back and forth until they are blue in the face; Bill Ritter can kick and scream about him being the legitimate Dem candidate; but none of it will affect how the average voters think until September 2006 at the soonest.
All of this he-said-he-said is nothing more than a high paid pissing match that will be all but forgotten next year by all but whomever the Dem candidate is.
I love it! Caldara a big fat liar, and now GOoPs eatting their own.
I could read this stuff forever.
The entertainment value can’t be beat, I agree. One wonders if it would be smarter for the GOP to keep its candidates at an undisclosed, media-free location until the primaries and elections. The more they talk, the more damage they do, and like the Republican Party everywhere, corruption shows up everywhere you shine the light.
Love it when the Republicans come under the circular firing squad… Line-em-up, boys! No shortage of ammo for ya!
Hugo is absolutely right
Average voters care not at all about this
Bobby Beauprez however, needs to appeal not to average voters but the approximately 20% of Republican voters who will turn out to vote in a primary. That is different.
Scott Gessler bagging a big client for his fledgling firm is a big coup. Even if Scott was Big Bob’s third choice.
And what about them clock cufflinks? That is what average voters will respond to
Yesterday some of them vandalized my “vote yes” sign in front of my house!
How childish.
Is there such a thing as a “No on C & D” yard sign? The pro signs are sprouting like dandelions, but I haven’t seen any from the anti lobby, nor any public events or grassroots activities. Did they make a strategic decision to do TV only?
DemAreDumb,
Go here for clock cufflinks:

Beaupreznit,
There are anti-C signs. Call this number to get some: 303.789.1233
“Both Ways Bob” is even MORE appropriate now.
Thanks for the clock cufflinks link — no pun
Hey I must say Congrats to Scott Gessler.
Beauprez will be billed a bundle and that is a great way to start to build a law practice and get out from under Tymkovich’s shadow. Way to go Scott.
The procedure one normally follows when there is an alleged violation of campaign finance law is to file a formal complaint with the Sec. of State that is then referred to an administrative law judge.
Apparently neither Mr. Gessler nor Mr. Beauprez thought they stood much of a chance before an ALJ (who would be forced to take into consideration that pesky 1st Amendment), and instead chose to go the administrative route which is much more likely to be subject to political influence (insert Bill Owens here). Not suprising.
With Scott Gessler representing BB, I wonder who will be taking the lead on defending Holtzman and/or the No on Ref C folks?
That’s no secret – Marc’s daddy will just write the check for his legal counsel!
It doesn’t matter who will eventually run for Guv next year, MH or BB will be victorious and continue the Republican domination. The US will be red once again. Vote no, it’s you dough! W POWER! Christians will rule!
W is right
Joan Fitz-Gerald and Andrew Romanoff are too cowardly to run. They want to run around and give speeches about C & D, not realizing that the Governor and the Republicans come off as winners either way.
Ritter is raising almost enough money to run a credible campaign for a Congressional seat but not enough to play with either Holtzman or Beauprez. Bottom line despite a truly bloody Republican primary they will still be far in front of the Democrats come next November.
There is a definate link between the Holtzman campaign and the “If C Wins You Lose Committee”. The person running the “If C Wins” committee and their highest paid consultant is Sam Pimm, who was Dick Leggitt’s assistant in last year’s West Virginia gubernatorial race. To say there is no connection between the campaign and this special interest group is silly.
I am a lifelong Colorado Republican and I don’t like all the out of state money and lobbyists.
