Republican Senator Norma Anderson today voiced her support for Secretary of State Gigi Dennis, saying at the latter’s confirmation hearing that she hoped Dennis would run for re-election and that she would support her if she did.
State Treasurer Mike Coffman already announced his intentions to run for SOS long before Dennis was appointed, but Dennis gave up a higher-paying job to take the SOS gig and may not go down without a fight. Anderson’s statement of support is an interesting early salvo in that regard.

Narma actually said this:
“I KNOW GIGI WILL RUN IN 2006”
The guy goes to Iraq to help out his country and Owens coronates someone else, I hope Coffman wipes the floor with her just for general principles.
A lot of men and women have gone to war and sacrificed for our country, and that is very noble. However, that doesn’t qualify all of them to be “handed” the position of Secretary of State. Did Coffman think by going to Iraq for a year was the only way to get elected to any state position? Especially since he received no real support when he was considering a run for governor.
Couldn’t guess what Coffman was thinking, but it seems to be kind of a low blow by Owens. After all, Coffman did bow gracefully out of the Gov’s race to clear the path for BB. You’d think Owens would do the same for him with SOS.
It’s nothing personal against Gigi, I’m sure she’d do great also.
This one just seems to be a little vindicitive from Owens, but God knows I’ve been wrong before.
Are there those that think Dennis is a legitimate challenger to Mike Coffman? The Mike Coffman who received 750,000+ votes for Treasurer in the last election before going off to serve in Iraq?
Contrast that with Gigi Dennis, who probably received ~25,000 votes in her last electoral victory, and then was in charge of rural development in Colorado for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Whatever you think of her USDA position, it can’t compare with serving in Iraq, can it?
Perhaps I’m off base here, but I don’t see any comparison between Coffman and Dennis as SOS candidates.
There has been a rumor that Gigi may be a Lt.Gov. pick which could help explain why Owens appointed her to SoS, helping her get some statewide name recognition.
I love all the comment regarding the need to preserve some electoral office for Coffman and using the war hero/serving our country premise.
I would like to know how many of those touting that also would have supported Max Cleland in Georgia when Karl Rove and the Republican party made a mockery of any kind of real patriotism or sacrifice in the name of winning an election.
I agree that serving your country should be service that is honored – I just wish those Republicans wanting Coffman to be honored would do the same for war heroes who have sacrificed limbs and more – Max Cleland as an example. But apparently hypocrisy goes hand in hand with Chicken Hawk patriotism.
When Bush, Rove, Cheney, Tancredo, et al decide to lay it on the line and face combat instead of dodging the draft or otherwise avoiding military service as Cleland and Coffman have done, then maybe they will deserve to be honored too.
I will give this to Mike, at least he is willing to serve and put his life on the line.
What other Republican running for statewide office this year can say that?
Mission Accomplished?
How about Coffman for lieutenant governor? It’s up to the gov. nominee to pick his running mate now and Mike’s broad experience would be better used as Lt. Gov. Plus, it would make him heir apparent as Gov. in 8 years, his real goal?
Secretary of State is a clerk, a glorified clerk, it’s true, but still a clerk. Mike deserves better.
Mike – this is what happens when you make deals with a dishonost man. He never intended to preserve a place for you. All he wanted was you out of the gov race. Remember what your friend Bob taught you; never trust the deal. Bill is loyal to only one person – himself. Mark my words; every other Coffman fan will now abonden that ship being driven by the man who did this purposely to you and commit ourselves to fighting for you and only you. I may have signed my pledge, but my time, sweat and money is for you man. Awaiting your return…
So much for a promise.
I have a question for all of you folks who are mad at Owens for appointing Gigi.
Where in the Colorado Constitution does it state that no one except Coffman deserves the SOS office?
What is with you Republicans who think that the voters shouldn’t get to decide who represents them? Do you really think that a small group of people should decide instead of the voters? Let Gigi runa and let Coffman run and let the voters decide.
Stop making things up Snarky. What promise? There was no promise. Voters decide elections. (Even though lots of DEMS like to pretend that the court decides elections.)
Please, everyone knows the deals that go on with Owens/Benson, Owens tries to clear the path for his own candidates that he hand selects.
Why else would he tell his staff to completely cut off contact with Marc Holtzman after Marc told Owens he was going to run for Gov whether Owens liked it or not.
Owens/Benson don’t believe in elections, they believe in coronations, plain and simple.
It’s not apparent to me that there’s a riff between Owens and Coffman. Donetta Davidson left the SOS position–Owens wasn’t just going to leave the position vacant. He had to appoint SOMEBODY.
Owens had a choice…he could appoint a popular, well-known candidate with designs on statewide office and that candidate could challenge Coffman and run for the position in 2006. Or, Owens could appoint a lesser-known person as a “favor” of sorts, giving that person some name recognition they could use to further their career after they left the SOS office for god knows what.
Isn’t it pretty obvious he chose the second alternative? I know that Gigi isn’t ruling out running, and she may end up being a good candidate if something happens to Coffman. But right now, she is a placeholder, and everyone seems to know it except those posting on this board.
I hope Gigi is not just a placeholder. She’s the better alternative to Coffman any day. Going to Iraq doesn’t “entitle” him to the position.
Anyone else find it amusing that the same crowd saying that BB is entitled to be gov is now saying that nobody is entitled to be SOS???
Democrats are stupid.
They will vote to confirm Gigi.
Democrats will run a sacrificial lamb such as that Munchkin Moron Fran Coleman.
Gigi will turn what has been well run non political office into a Republican Party tool.
If, Alice Madden thought that $36,000 fine was bad she ain’t seen nothing yet.
What will the Democrats do about this potential problem. Nothing, but confirm her and run no one against her of any talent or ability.
How come Coffman gets a free pass just for going to Iraq? I’m a little perturbed that he just gave up an office that he was elected to serve.
This is to “Ohmy” and others that I have seen posting about Mike.
Is it just possible that maybe Coffman went to Iraq because he felt it was the right thing to do and not for political gain? We all think strategy on here all the time, which is fine. Mike is a pretty genuine guy though, and comes from a different mold. If he thought solely about political gain and his political future, he would have sold out Schaffer like some of the others last election. Thankfully however he did not, and earned alot of respect while he was at it.
I talked to Mike several times about his Iraq stint and there is no question he is sincere about serving there. Needless to say, if he had stayed here, he wouldn’t have been appointed SOS anyway. His Iraq service undoubtedly had political implications, as everything does. But to imply he was motivated by political considerations is just dumb. Disgrunted GOPER hit it right on the head.
I’m not talking about going to Iraq for political gain. I’m talking about leaving an elected office to go to Iraq. The people of Colorado elected him to serve until 2006. I just don’t think it’s right to leave a job you were elected to do in the middle of your term. If he wanted to serve, he shouldn’t have run again in 2004. I don’t care why he did it. He has a job to do here.
Spoken like someone who has never served her country, Susan. Also spoken like someone who is trying to take a cheap shot at Mike and isn’t too particular about how she does it.
Without just taking a shot at me, why can’t this be a serious question? He was elected to serve a four year term, and he voluntarily left in the middle of it. I commend him for going to Iraq, I really do, but I think he should have finished his term first. Why can’t I bring up a serious question without getting attacked? Maybe you just don’t have a response. My question has nothing to do with “serving your country.”
i think susan has a valid point. coffman did just up and leave in the middle of an elected term to one of only five statewide offices. i think all elected officials have a responsibility to serve the full term they were elected to serve or they shouldn’t run. that’s not too much to ask. i don’t care if he went to iraq or took a job with qwest. he still left.
Gee, if only those Iraqi insurgents were more considerate, they’d have waited until Susan felt it was OK for Mike to leave office before they started killing teachers and school kids. They are SO MEAN!
I agree with you about one thing…Your question has nothing to do with serving our country.
Since you are obviously of the portside persuasion, let’s ask if you would be equally outraged if Joan Fitz-Gerald was re-elected to a four year Senate term, then ran for Congress in 2006? And, of course, you howled in outrage when Salazar speculated he might run for governor after just 2 years into his six year term…
But, no, I overlooked something, they’re Democrats. We’ve got to get back to Susan’s subject, which is vilifying men and women who put patriotism above politics.
Damned inconsiderate, those Baathist terrorists.
I don’t know voyageur… I like Susan’s logic stream here.
It is wrong to leave a job half way through!
Let’s impeach SEN Salazar right after he votes for Judge Roberts. Afterall, he left that Attorney job to run for Senate didn’t he?
It’s not like Coffman decided to bail on being Treasurer to go surfing for a couple of years. He is still serving the people of Colorado (and all of America) through his work in Iraq, and I think all would agree he’s doing more good now then he would as Treasurer.
So, if he’s doing more good now, shouldn’t we praise his decision rather than criticize it?
Mike, Mike, that’s different! Salazar is a Democrat. And he didn’t leave in mid-term to serve his country, which would have been despicable. He left to advance his political ambitions, which is wonderful, given that he’s a Democrat.
One more time (and please take notes, I’m tired of having to lecture you on this.)
Democrats, Good. Republicans, Bad. Serving your country, Bad, unless done by John Kerry, which was Good.
Oh, forget about it. You’re so mired in logic you’ll NEVER grasp the zeitgeist.
