Hillaristas To Spike Obama's Coronation?

  • by: Colorado Pols

The Washington Post’s The Trail blog reports:

With rumors flying about whether Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will seek to include her name in a roll call vote of delegates at the Democratic convention, the Clinton and Obama campaign teams issued a rare joint statement on Wednesday night confirming that they are “working together” to come up with a suitable solution.

“At the Democratic Convention, we will ensure that the voices of everyone who participated in this historic process are respected and our party will be fully unified heading into the November election,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement on behalf of the two camps.

Clinton has made it clear that she is not considering formally fighting Sen. Barack Obama for the nomination in Denver later this month. But her supporters, some still riled from the close primary contest, have threatened to create at least a disturbance if she is not given enough respect, including, possibly, having her name entered into contention and the votes of her delegates read aloud.

At this point, it is as likely as not that Clinton will be formally nominated at the convention, individuals close to the negotiations said…

  1. with Bill Clinton’s open hostility and the theory that the Clintons really would rather see McCain win, in spite of all the damage a McCain presidency would do especially where women’s issues are concerned, so that HRC can try again in 2012 gains credibility. Lets hope that’s not the case.

Of course if the Clinton’s WERE to be stupid enough as to give the slightest appearance of undermining Obama and Obama DID lose, they would be so hated for it by such an overwhelming majority of Dems that HRC would be the last person on the planet to have a chance in 2012.  If, on the other hand, they try to undermine him and he wins in spite of it, they will be relegated to political Siberia, having proved they aren’t needed or even relevant anymore.

Let’s just hope they wake up in time to do the right thing which also happens to be the only smart thing even if pure self interest really is the entirety of what they are about. Sadly, they both seem unable to fully accept reality and Bill seems unable to get over his so obviously seething resentment and envy of the new cool kid on the block.

The best way for HRC to separate herself from her overgrown adolescent husband would be to be as gracious as possible, drop her effort to have her name on a roll call vote, cheer lead the coronation party and work her tail off in as obvious a way as possible for Obama.

Her relevancy and position of importance as a Democratic star are still salvageable.  Bill, in his usual reckless style, is quickly heading toward a final self destruction.  If HRC is smart, she won’t go down with his sinking ship.

  2. For the first time in history, a female candidate got nearly 50% of the popular vote in the primary process for a major party. Just becuase an African American man ended up winning the nomination does not and should not take away from the fact that Hillary’s candidacy was historic. I saw the article about this online somewhere and what Hillary said sounded good: give them a chance to have their voices heard, let them shout and have a little fun with it, and then let’s all get behind Obama becuase he won fair and square.

    1. If the primaries had worked out the other way around, would she be OK with Obama’s supporters wanting to put his name in for nomination and counting his delegates?

For some reason I doubt that…

  3. Bringing HRC onstage for a primetime speech and allowing her supporters to cheer to their heart’s content is one thing.

Putting her name in nomination and having a vote, so that everyone can again be reminded of how Obama nearly lost and how all these big states went for HRC, is quite another.

  4. If you don’t let Hillary have HER vote the Hillary people will either vote for McCain or not vote at all.

If you let Hillary have HER vote you are in danger of having a NEW Democratic Candidate.

Then you will lose Obama supporters.   OR a losing Hillary vote still will make Obama look weak showing the “spit” in the Dem Party.

Go back to my title: Screwed If you Do Screwed If You Don’t

    1. for there to be a new Democratic candidate would be for the super-delegates to jump ship at the convention. If there were a big board for things like that I would put the odds at 1,000,000:1.

    2. The number of Hillary diehards, even among her delegates, is a tiny minority.  Every single person I know who went to caucus, county and state as a Hillary delegate is now on board with Obama.

Yes, those who are going all the way to national are the most committed but only the most stupid and spiteful want to screw things up for our candidate and risk losing to a  McCain who is against everything HRC supporters say they stand for. It would be nice if they agree to a united front  but will not do serious harm if they choose to insist on the roll call and a little noise. Every day the average voter cares less and less about the demands of the Clintonistas.

  5. The women of America are watching how you treat Hillary.  Any of course the Dems will screw it up because they see Obama slipping in the polls.

Like I said before, Screwed If you Do Screwed If you Don’t
