  3. For the more intellectually inclined Polsters.  A clear analysis from the WSJ of why Obama lost on his executive amnesty program.

    The Obama administration argued that DAPA is a routine application of “prosecutorial discretion”—the authority of executive officials to set priorities for enforcement of the law and to refrain from enforcement in cases where the public interest is least urgent. The district court recognized, however, that prosecutorial discretion is limited to nonenforcement and doesn’t entitle the executive branch to grant affirmative benefits such as work permits and welfare without statutory authority and notice-and-comment rule-making.

    As the court explained, “DHS has not instructed its officers to merely refrain from arresting, ordering the removal of, or prosecuting unlawfully-present aliens.” Instead the department “has enacted a wide-ranging program that awards legal presence, to individuals Congress has deemed deportable or removable, as well as the ability to obtain Social Security numbers, work authorization permits, and the ability to travel.”

      In a relative world, just finding a few Oklahoma legislators not wanting to burn books, or just using the paper to wipe their ass in the outhouse, is a big step towards modernity.

    It seems somehow appropriate that this week’s Euro-showdown came just after American audiences gave “Fifty Shades of Gray” a record-breaking opening weekend. There are those in the United States who share the Germans’ economic kink – they’re called Republicans – and the hostility underlying their austerity fetish is revealed from time to time in moments of unintended candor.

    Americans will recall the genuine anger in Mitt Romney’s voice on that now-infamous secret recording, how the tones of bitterness welled up when he spoke of the “47 percent” who he mistakenly claimed did not pay taxes. “They believe the government has a responsibility to care for them,” sneered Romney, “that they are entitled – to health care, to food, to housing, you name it. That’s an entitlement.”

    Another recording recently surfaced of Republican Joni Ernst, now a senator from Iowa, insisting that our government needs additional “severe cuts” and adding that

    “… what we have fostered, is really a generation of people who rely on the government to provide absolutely everything for them. It’s going to take a lot of education to get people out of that. It’s going to be very painful and we know that.”

    Nothing purifies the soul, it seems, like the suffering of others.They austerity crowd has a flair for hypocrisy, too. Here at home, Romney and Ernst both benefited from government programs: Romney’s Bain Capital gamed the tax code, while Ernst’s family received more than $460,000 in farm subsidies. Other hypocritical austerity acolytes include the aging wunderkind Rep. Paul Ryan, who collected Social Security benefits as a teenager and now seeks to cut them.

    That hypocrisy was on display in 2009, when CNBC’s Rick Santelli egged on some apish traders on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade. That led to an impromptu demonstration against aid for homeowners ripped off by Wall Street, in scams which have since led to multibillion-dollar settlements. “Losers!” shouted these pampered denizens of the already-rescued financial system.

    Thus was born the right-wing Tea Party, the extreme pro-austerity movement that today holds the Republican Party in its thrall.

    Germany’s leaders have shown that they can be as hypocritical as American bankers, especially when it comes to extending the kind of helping hand to others which they’ve already enjoyed themselves. Germany benefited from a generous program of debt forgiveness in a 1953 write-off that was proportionally larger than anything being requested for Greece. That leniency was granted despite the fact that Germany then, like Greece today, had serious tax-collection problems.

    So far, Michael Bennet and Hillary Clinton are clearly on the path of reinforcing Republican lies about our economy and advocating for the rich over the poor. The election in 2016 may make or break Democrats' affair with Wall St.. If they were smart, they'd make it obvious to voters now, if not yesterday, that they won't play the stupid Blue Dog/Fix the Debt/Triangulation game any longer. Because in the long run it'll be the votes that count, not the campaign contributions from their rich friends.

    1. You're assuming voters have a clue. Like I said, if it's going to be DLC darling HRC, who apparently is having trouble coming up with any coherent message other than "Dammit, it's my turn", against a third dynastic Bush, just wake me when it's over.

      Seriously, if anyone here can tell me why exactly HRC wants the job, besides just wanting the job, and what exactly she believes in and wants to acomplish, besides being the first woman prsident, I'd honestly like to hear it because I honestly have no idea. Not being snarky. I invite HRC fans to fill me in, if they woud be so kind. I'm going to vote for her if she runs because there isn't an R on the planet I believe wouldn't worse in the WH, but I'd like to feel that there are better reasons than, at least she isn't a Republican.

  10. Let me see if I have this right. Patrick Neville had to wait too long for a gun purchase check to clear. (Wasn't that reported last week?)  Morgan Carroll has an amendment to a funding bill to appropriate more money to hire more technicians to do checks which will speed up the process.  The Republicans in the state Senate vote down her amendment on a party line vote.  Am I missing something here?

    Keynote speaker at energy forum appears to be an anti-science conspiracy theorist

    The 10th Annual GJ Energy Expo and Forum will be held at the Two Rivers Conv. Center on Friday Feb. 27. (http://www.energyexpoco.com/visitor_information.cfm)

    The keynote speaker (scheduled for 1:30pm) is John Casey, the president, registered agent, and sole in-house employee of Space and Science Research Corporation, located just a few miles from Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

    The speaker lineup was largely set by a small subset of the forum’s planning committee. These three key players are Kathy Hall, Bonnie Peterson and George Rossman. My understanding is that Bonnie Peterson was responsible for the invitation extended to John Casey. Casey is a bit player among climate deniers. It does not appear to me that he has received much attention outside of Florida tea party groups and Newsmax.com. So how he came to the attention of folks from Grand Junction escapes me.

    Casey’s claim is that he can predict climate change on Earth from sunspot counts. He has a couple of “reports” linked at the bottom of this page: (http://spaceandscience.net/id64.html). One of them was “pal-reviewed.” These reports might be of the quality for an above average high school term paper, but they do not stack up to the standards of original scientific research (they don’t measure up as scientific reviews either, even though he claims to have conducted an “exhaustive” literature review).

    I am concerned that we have a anti-science conspiracy theorists being brought to our homes to speak at a venue that claims to bring together “the most visionary participants” and makes that claim that its purpose is “aimed at educating the public about energy issues, best practices and companies engaged in energy.”
