Chaps takes office next week! Is Colorado prepared?
Anyone taking bets on when, not if, he gets censured by the legislature?
I don't know……the bar is set pretty high for that to happen. Basically, because of the speech and debate clause, I think even the Dems would be reluctant to start doing THAT because the precedent it would set. He can, however, be sanctioned for conduct or actions. That's the precedent that Doug Bruce established.
They should never ask him to conduct opening prayers, even if he is a Chaplain. If they do, they totally deserve whatever embarrassing diatribes come out of his gumby-looking mouth.
I'll vote for explusion within the next 12 weeks, if not sooner….
I think you have to kick somebody.
When does Klingerschmidt get to file his five bill titles? I'll bet they'll be priceless. Making the costs associated with an exorcism tax deductible on your state return. Giving homophobic bakers and florists a protected class status. Calling for a constitutional convention to repeal the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 19th Amendments.
Chaps should be prepared to face the Ethics Commission in a short order after Chaps violates several rules that he didn't bother reading….
Hey – the minimum wage ticks up a notch in Colorado this year. Still not where it needs to be, though. Just a reminder of who is helped by raising minimum wage:
FYI – $8.23/hour times 2,080 hours/year (40 hours/week times 52 weeks,no vacation) = $17,118. Oh, and don't forget to subtract FICA @ 7.65% = $1,310 leaving a net $15,808. Truly pathetic.
Oops, not done yet. There are actually Federal and Colorado income taxes to deduct! Assuming this wage earner is a single person, Federal income taxes total $698 and CO income taxes total $323. There are no tax credits available.
So, now the net after tax minimum wage paycheck = $14,787 or, $1,232/month. Don't spend it all in one place — at least you won't have to worry about spending money on a vacation because you don't get one!
$1,232? Isn't that the average rent for a one-bedroom in Denver, these days?
Without utilities.
You can get a nice Cherry Creek location for much less . . .
. . . as long as you're not bothered by the traffic passing on the bridge overhead.
That's right……just underneath Colorado Blvd by the Holiday Inn Express. Conveniently close to the bus routes.
It's why we need at least $10.20 to $15 hour minimum wage. It would lift a lot of people out of poverty, and grow the economy. In the states which did raise the minimum wage to at least these levels,
This is one of the best…
(this is the 'debunked' version by someone attempting to discredit Hanauer presentation. The comment thread is pretty hilarious).
It seems to me that a ballot question to amend Article XVIII, Section 15, of the Colorado Constitution to bring the base amount up to a more realistic level would have a good chance of succeeding in 2016. In the states where minimum wage ballot issues passed in 2014, http://www.realclearpolitics.com/2014/11/08/the_election039s_other_winner_the_minimum_wage_345483.html , they had both Democratic and Republican support.
Is there a group working on this that anyone knows of? I would certainly be interested in working with one if it exists or were to be formed.
Someone has to help me with why in the name of common sense a minimum wage worker is paying taxes. There's a fair good chance such a person is actually receiving some form of social assistance. Wouldn't it be better for them to keep that money in their own pocket to begin with rather than having to apply to get it back as SNAP or TANF?
According to Mitt Romney, they don't. Aren't they included in the 47% he was squawking about?
This math is instructive. How on Earth is Mittens going to afford those four elevators for Ann's Cadillac in their California vacation home if they can't rely on carried interest?
They don't pay 35%.
Many of the 47% who don't pay federal income tax because they don't make enough after deductions do pay payroll and other taxes which do wind up comprising a higher percentage of their income than the percentage paid by others in that 47%…. namely very rich people who manage to find ways to pay little to no taxes. Many suspect Romney has fallen into the latter category more than a few times.
In Romney world, unless someone pays capital gains taxes, they're freeloaders. Only the little people pay payroll taxes…..
In many cases only the little people pay taxes, period. If you're rich enough there are ways to zero out and it's not all that rare.
My example above for a single minimum wage earner paid a total of 13.6% in FICA and income taxes.
80% of Americans don't trust republicans http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/01/27/80-no-trust-republicans/
Then I guess most of the 80% must be pretty stupid since they keep electing them.
Pass the popcorn….

I have no doubt there were some Democrats who once thought like David Duke. Remember Lester Maddox and George Wallace. But over time, they followed Strom Thurmond and all joined the Party of Lincoln.
Who knows? There also might be a few too recent for comfort southern Dems who sought to, ummm, broaden their appeal to resist the encroaching red tide. But it probably didn't do them much good in the most recent cycles and they're probably pretty much all gone from office by now, like the last of the truly moderate Rs. I'll be happy to munch my popcorn either way.
