Fundraising numbers are in for Referenda C&D from Q3, and the YES campaign — as expected — has a sizable lead. From the Rocky Mountain News:
The Vote Yes on C&D committee raised $876,633 in the last two weeks of September, for a total war chest of $4.38 million…
…Caldara’s group, Vote No, It’s Your Dough, received $1,560 in cash in the September reporting period. That group has raised a total of $127,693. Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights author Douglas Bruce made an in-kind donation of $8,440 to the group in the form of billboards, signs and bumper stickers.
But two other groups working to defeat the referendums haven’t yet reported their contributions. Both the Colorado Club for Growth and the If C Wins, You Lose campaign have been funding TV advertising against the referendums. The latter group has received funding from the father of gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman, who donated $100,000 in early September. Holtzman is featured in the ads.
In a tight race, which Referenda C&D is going to be down to the wire, a fundraising advantage of this margin will play a big role.

No school will close if C fails. But they may be forced to quit spending like this. Craaaazy.

No school will close if C fails.
Some elementary schools may close if D fails, since there are several maintenance projects the state was legally required to do in 2000 that it has failed to. We have many elementary school buildings with an unsafe rating, some of which may close if repairs aren’t made.
Community colleges will indeed close if C fails. Front Range and CMC apparently have fallback plans already in place that involve closing campuses.
But they may be forced to quit spending like this.
Who are “they,” and what are they spending? Please be specific.
read the story. link posted above.
I thought 23 mandates increased spending for K-12.
C & D rocks! I am so sick of the lame no commercials which I probably saw 10 of in the course of 30 minutes last night. Vote no – it’s your dough – is that the best they can come up with? No wonder they are training in the polls and the money race!
Keith,
23 does mandate spending increases, but there’s an extra ~$190 million that will need to be spent in the next couple of years over regular spending; the Giardino settlement requires the State to properly fund capital construction on schools in extreme disrepair. That settlement is mostly paid for through Ref. D (and hence through Ref. C). Without C&D, that money will have to come from *somewhere*, or the schools in question will be closed as health hazards.
I don’t think the schools will close, personally; I think the settlement forces the expenditures. More likely that it hastens the demise of the higher education system.
OK. Let’s fire Ward Churchill and put his salary towards K-12.
I know, I know that won’t be enough….but you’re not going to get me to vote for a tax increase as long as Churchill is getting over $90,000. to teach 13 students.
Amendment 23 has specific education items that its funding mandates can be spent on. Capital repairs is not one of them.
oh well. If the state can pay a freak like Churchill 90k to teach 13 people, they have enough in my book.
Good point, Dan. I should have clarified.
