There are reports of considerable unease at the offices of congressional representatives vulnerable to the “charge” of a close relationship with Tom DeLay in the wake of his indictment on campaign fundraising violations this week. Reps. Bob Beauprez and Marilyn Musgrave stand out as the most exposed Colorado politicans, each having accepted around $20,000 from DeLay’s Americans for a Republican Majority (ARMPAC) combined with voting records that are at least 96% in line with DeLay’s.
It’s important to note that the specifics of DeLay’s indictment do not even indirectly implicate either of them in any crime: it’s believed that the money that was “laundered” and eventually given to the RNC was spent on Texas state and congressional races. If the liberals want them to “give the money back” in a way that actually addresses the sort of thing DeLay is accused of masterminding, they would need to give back a lot more than $20,000 that was received more or less above-board from a registered PAC. That doesn’t seem likely, and makes the call for divestiture a symbolic gesture. The GOP hasn’t exactly purged DeLay from their midst as of this writing.
However, the “DeLay crisis” is widely rumored to have temporarily disrupted Republican fundraising at the national level, as big wallets hole up and wait to see where it’s safe to send a check. The unfavorable light that DeLay’s temporary successor, Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri is being immediately cast in means that the heat is on in a way that maybe we haven’t seen since the GOP took control of the House in 1994. The potential spreading of this scandal to other, perhaps many other, House Republicans is a very dangerous possibility.
Democrats are pushing their meme of “Incompetence and Corruption” with a cohesion one can only admire as Republican, and you can look forward to Nancy Pelosi repeating it more often than you can stand (we mean it-cringe) between now and November of 2006. To whatever extent they make the charge stick will make or break the GOP in the midterm elections.
In the context of all that, Colorado gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman sent out a brief and slightly cryptic email to a good number of constituents yesterday afternoon:
From: Marc Holtzman [mailto:marcholtzman@marc2006.com]
Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 1:03 PM
To: Marc Holtzman
Subject: I Need Your Help Immediately!
Importance: High
You may have received within in the last few days an email solicitation from Congressman Bob Beauprez, my opponent in the race for Governor of Colorado.
If you received this request for funds from Congressman Beauprez and have not previously been a donor to the Congressman’s campaigns, or if you have noticed other unusual e-mail activity, I would appreciate very much if you would do the following immediately:
1. Let me know the date and time that you received the solicitation.
2. Forward me a copy of the email if you still have it.
With my friendship and deep appreciation.
marc
Of course, this could be nothinga mere (and if so not very well thought out given the email’s broad distribution) fishing exercise, anticipating some kind of fundraising outreach from Beauprez and hoping to capitalize on any missteps he might makeor Photoshop, turnabout always being fair play. Holtzman can certainly use the deflection from questions about his own campaign fundraising.
Or it could be something more specific he’s looking for? Evidence that some of Beauprez’s usual pipelines have dried up? This would certainly be the week for it…

Marc could get a job at McDonalds; he’s very skilled at grabbing at straws.
Marc and the Dems have to be careful how they play this whole thing; if they pile on too hard they have a real chance of looking desparate.
Could Marc Holtzman be more of a douche bag. I think we (the republican party) need to endorse BB and force MH to petition on. Holtzman has to go.
I’m I big mixed martial arts fight fan, and I think the Democrats should have a fighter’s mentality towards the Republicans. They have a knockdown. Now, the Democrats need to follow Delay, Abromoff, Rove, Libby, Safavian, Pearle and Frist to the mat, get full mount, and beat them silly and then choke them out.
Showing mercy would be stupid politically. The Republicans are bloody, hurt, and will take more punishment over the next few months from Earle and Fitzgerald. Now is the time to pile on and make them pay.
It is time to gut the sinister pigs.
Kenevan-I couldn’t agree more. Just as importantly, when the democrats gain back the House and Senate, and grab the Governor’s seat here in CO, they must maintain their momentum. This needs to be accomplished through communicating their alternate view and vision for America. In my opinion, this message must include 1. alternate, cleaner and the conservation of energy. This will fundamentally alter the foreign policy misdirection this Administration has bungled into. 2. It must also include working for a more peaceful planet, thus allowing the reduction of the defense budget. This isn’t pie in the sky idealism. (See #1 above). 3. It also must include a more progressive tax policy, tied to a universal health care program. 4. It should advocate for the end of the war on drugs. The use of marijuana, for instance, should not be a crime. A more enlightened approach would save billions that could be better spent on education and prevention. 5. An aggressive global warming reduction program, in concert and in cooperation with all the industrialized nations of the world, tied to population control measures. 6. A concerted effort to more equitably distribute the wealth of the nation. It’s obscene that CEO’s should be making 100’s of millions per year.
To Holzman Blows:
I don’t mind Holtzman doing what the Democrats will do more effectively on all the rest of the Republicans as he opens this most foul can of worms. Although we all know that 70% of incumbent campaign financing comes from out of state, I’d say that both sides of the political spectrum might need to take a long hard look at how they proceeed as well as how irrelevant constituents actually become when outside financing is involved.
The DNC, MoveOn, the MSM and y’all need to remember that Marilyn’s in to DeLay for a lot more than 30 grand. She’s been mopping up after DeLay put her on the Republicans for a Majority Party (ROMP) list — giving her access to hundreds of thousands more. So its not just a little bit of money. She owes him everything: access, committee position, and power.
Then she comes and grandstands in front of women’s centers she hasn’t done a damn thing for.
I like how BB can file a campaign finance charge against MH, but the second MH looks into BB’s campaign finances everyone calls him a douche bag…. Desperation anyone? Look in the mirror and you’ll find the real douche bags.
The title of this post is completely midleading, as it refers to Holtzman making an obvious move to try to steal some quick points from Beauprez and Toxic Tom, but diverts into reporting third hand rumor mongering and speculating on the messages of the 2006 COngressional elections. Then it cuts and pastes some “who cares” email to make the post relevant to the headline again.
Weak.
I don’t get this at all… so Beauprez sending out a fundraising e-mail is “unusual” activity? This coming from the guy who started a blog but never posted to it? What a joke…
Mr.Collins,
You must truly hate yourself or you can only hate your fellow constituents to believe what you say. I don’t care how much money comes from out side the state or even in side the state, if you don’t believe that every single individual can make the right decision…… then you are already indicating that you are a socialist.
Demanding that others subscribe to your philosopy by force. Good luck.
This message doesn’t seem like holtzman’s. No body like marc would have such a long e-mail address……..marcholtzman@marc….. give me a break…. anyone over 40 who is not typing by profession doesn’t type……they choose short abbreviations for e-mail addresses…. This is a fraud.
Just proves that when the media, the republican machine, and general deception get together to smear someone because they are a little outside the party’s mold within this state…everybody is against him …..Holtzman threatens all of that establishment….it is in the papers everyday.
I don’t know holtzman but I think he is a force to contend with in this state, the republican establishment better look out.
Holtzman is knocking!
Andrew
“the republican establishment better look out”……change this to..”the republican establishment needs to be aborted.”
Wannabe-
MH’s campaign manager is the most experienced c.m. in the state, it’s a pretty good bet that MH’s campaign heard something and is following up on it.
But I love how you assume that you have any idea what their referring to and then attack them for it without knowing.
Marc’s posted like three postings on his blog, which is a lot better than another gubenatorial candidate who doesn’t even have his website up yet.
Andrew-
I don’t think it was a hoax.. Although it’s not the e-mail address the campaign has used to send similiar communications out from.

Andrew, whatever could you mean? I am rather shocked as I was hardly thinking hateful thoughts toward constituents, but rather disdain for incumbents of both stripes. For you to feel I was demanding either personally or broadly obviously was misinterpretation, it was a gentle caution to the pot that calling the kettle black might not be the wisest strategy. As for trust in individuals, no problems, but then again with all the riders placed upon/in/on the 14th Amendment, I’d say the problem lies not in individuals but in the greatest threat to American democracy, corporatocracy. By definition representative democracy is greatly diminished by giving corporations such unbridled influence. As for pigeon holing me as a socialist because I choose not to recognize corporations as individuals is a bit of a stretch, but if a confession is what you seek, here it is, I am a Methodist, a Democrat, a veteran, I love myself, others and most of all, I love the Law.
Help me understand. How is the email from Holtzman have anything to do with Delay? I’m not connecting the dots here and missing something.
Any other information as to why Holtzman sent the email?
Holtzman’s looking for dirt, I’d say. With Both Ways Bob coming after him for appearing in a “No on C&D” ad (way to attack your own side, BWB), I’m sure Holtzman wants to one-up Beauprez. Not only will Holtzman go after BWB’s 2002 bank ad, he wants something more.
Right, but his email implies there is something specific, something more. Any ideas?
What does Beauprez have to do with DeLay?
Tens of thousands of dollars, that’s what! Probably much more, that’s what!
A 96.41% identical voting record, that’s what!
An utter disrespect for his constituents because he DOESN’T NEED THEIR MONEY, that’s what!
Beauprez is nothing more than a minion of the DeLay Machine, and it ain’t no conservative organization. Beauprez, like DeLay, is interested ONLY in the cultivation of his own personal power base. Who he sells out to, how much he gets, what happens to the people of Colorado along the way — that shit’s just scenery, like it is to Tom DeLay.
Did that help?
yah,
Why not just be blunt about it? </grin>
Musgrave’s in deeper than Beauprez; she got more money from him, and I believe is also in for $5k on Delay’s legal defense fund.
Both Ways Bob: What have you been up to? And what does Marc’s friends in DC have on you?? We all may know the answer soon enough…
But all I know is this: I signed up for the newsletter and didn’t get one of those emails. I’ve also signed up for the Beauprez newsletter (on his One Page Wonder web site) and HAVE YET to get a newsletter.
But here’s my two cents — Beauprez has a track record of franking outside of his district and sharing lists (fundraising, specifically) without asking permission or compensating the original owner. So my guess: in his zest for fundraising dollars (over 600k, I hear) he blasted the Delay donors list.
I went to that web site — “in delay’s pocket” — and BWB was listed SECOND. Would Delay open up his donor and house file to help BWB? I think so. Is it illegal? Not unless BWB forgot to pay Delay back for the value of the lists.
That’s an interesting thought: how many of BWB’s out of state donors are also regular Delay donors?
I think Tom Tancredo better be worried, too. According to the Campaign for America’s Future (http://www.ourfuture.org/action_center/delaypac_byamount.cfm) TT is the number 15 recipient of money from Delay’s PAC, receiving more money than either Beauprez or Musgrave.
The reason this site is losing readers is stupid people like phoenix “falling” just pop off without knowing what they are talking about. BB gave 1K to Delay’s legal defense fund. MM didn’t give a dime. And it is easy to look up if phoenix had half a brain or wasn’t a lazy hack. Too bad their isn’t a truth test before the posts were allow but then again stupid phoenix wouldn’t get to post. And for the record BB’s money will be well spend when a federal judge throws out Earl’s phoney indictment.
I really wish Colorado Pols would stop posting Red Hawk’s B.S. as their own. You are all just shills for MH at this point.
ahh… the idiots posting on this site are overwhelming…
Somebody’s gaming your ass, that’s for sure.
Look over there! It’s those [insert your opponent here] shills!
Good call, “stupid” – I’m willing to admit that mistake. The Delay information is a bit more buried than it was a couple of months ago and it took me a bit to dig it up. I thought I had recalled one of our reps donating in the $5k range; apparently I was wrong – Beauprez and Tancredo are the only two donating to that fund, and “only” at the $1,000 level. All of our Colorado GOP Representatives except Hefley are in for ~$30k to Delay’s ARMPAC, and those same Reps were also in support of protecting Delay by weakening the Ethics rules.
(also note I qualified with an “I believe”; I didn’t have the info on-hand, and it didn’t immediately pop up with the one Google search I had done – limited time, limited research. Found it this time, as per the previous post.)
And, um – the grand jury foreman – a former sheriff’s deputy and a State insurance investigator (aka not a dupe) – cites “stacks” of evidence” against Delay. Right now, Delay’s defense was that, co-incidentally, a “different” $190,000 dollars was disbursed by the RNC after it received the corporate $190,000. That’s a pretty pathetic defense.
