I’ve been curious about it, but haven’t given it much thought about it out of guilt, but I was given pause by Dave Winer’s column on Huffington Post.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…
He lists some good candidates. Here’s my take. I’m not one for figuring odds, so no Big Line here.
This is by no means suggesting replacements. No one can replace Tim Russert in that chair. His passion and talents were unique and likely will never be seen again. I am merely commenting on new host candidates.
I also won’t put a poll on, I’m making it a write-in campaign, so pick your preference.
Keith Olbermann- Not a chance. I like him, but he ‘s not capable of the nonpartisanship necessary for this role. Also, he’s too good on Countdown.
Chuck Todd- Another good analyst, very detail oriented and seems to know his policy. A good candidate, a bridge between the establishment and new media.
David Gregory- I agree with Winer, a little dull at times. Maybe partner him with a co-host, my pick would be Rachel Maddow or George Stephanopolous, but not James Carville.
Andrea Mitchell- A good choice. As a senior journalist at NBC, would be a major promotion and another hit at the “glass ceiling.” She has the experience and ability to hold the show.
Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough- Matthews would be okay, but Meet the Press is a different kind of show than Hardball. He and the guests would have to share the air. Joe doesn’t stand a chance unless they put an oppoosing viewpoint ala Crossfire.
Tom Brokaw- I’d love it, but he may be enjoying semi-retirement too much to go back to that kind of grind.
Of the others listed, I like Anderson Cooper. He has the experience and would bring a level of challenge for the guests, an accountability that Tim Russert held them to.
Meet the Press is an institution, made powerful by the integrity and moral and ethical anchor of Tim Russert. It’s a news show, not diluted by aspirations of entertainment. Many of us have grown up and matured on the Sunday intellectual stimulation that was Tim Russert. Sadly, his passing marks the passing of a singularly great man, and leaves a void in journalism that may never be filled.

Next to Russert, my favorite journalist with NBC News was Chris Matthews. Simply because of the show’s style, he’s unlikely to get the spot.
David Gregory or Andrea Mitchell are the likely choices. I’m almost 100% positive that NBC will promote from within their ranks, so Anderson Cooper is unlikely, plus, he hardly communicates that “everyman” image that Russert used to really evolve Meet the Press.
