Lamm Misses Early Cut for EMILYs List

  • by: Colorado Pols

As we await fundraising reports from Q3 to start rolling in, it’s probably a good guess that Democrat Peggy Lamm didn’t blow anyone’s socks off in raising money.

EMILY’s List, which we have written about before with Lamm, announced its first round of endorsements last week. According to an article in Roll Call (subscription required) and a list on the EMILYs List website, Lamm did not make the first cut for the fundraising behemoth:

EMILY’s List has rolled out its first round of endorsements more than a year ahead of next November’s midterm elections.

The group, which helps raise funds for Democratic women who support abortion rights, has weighed in on 11 Congressional races so far. Several races feature freshman Senators the group backed in 2000 – Sens. Maria Cantwell (Wash.), Debbie Stabenow (Mich.) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) – and some are long-serving incumbents such as California’s Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Lynn Woolsey. The group also is hoping to ensure that freshmen Reps. Melissa Bean (Ill.) and Allyson Schwartz (Pa.) do not hit a sophomore slump.

Staying true to its philosophy that Early Money Is Like Yeast, the group already has thrown in with several challengers: Westport First Selectwoman Diane Farrell, who is taking her second stab at unseating Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.) in the Constitution State’s 4th district; attorney Lois Murphy, who is seeking a rematch with Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.) in the Keystone State’s 6th district; Hillsborough County Commissioner Kathy Castor, the daughter of failed 2004 Senate nominee Betty Castor, who is seeking the open 11th district seat in the Sunshine State; and Missouri Auditor Claire McCaskill, who hopes to unseat freshman Sen. Jim Talent (R-Mo.).

EMILY’s List endorsed Farrell and Murphy last year as well as McCaskill in her unsuccessful gubernatorial bid and the elder Castor in her Senate race. The group also announced its support of several women running for state offices across the country.

As we reported earlier, Lamm had been impressing EMILYs List officials by reorganizing her staff and streamlining her operation, but she might not have been raising enough money to really push her over the edge for support. EMILYs List can love everything about you, but if you don’t show the ability to raise money on your own, they won’t add you to the list.

  1. I have to say that the early endorsements kinda surprise me a bit. The candidates are either incumbants who are not in any real danger or are clallengers who do not seem to have a chance.

If I were Peggy, I would be happy not to be included with that group.

  2. No candidate for Secretary of State, Attorney Genereal or Treasurer
Two candidates for CD 7 — Come on Peggy have the guts to make a deal and drop out and run statewide.
By the way where are the so called party leaders
DeGette, Waak, Romanoff, Fitz-Gerald in this potential debacle. Why do they not show leadership and push Lamm to run for Secretary of State. Kind of self evident that would require some guts and leadership. Better to speak to the Westminster Optimists Club and pick up a nice banner than to display real leadership

  3. If you were Peggy you wouldn’t want to be included with that group? Sorry Dan, but you, sir, are a moron. Emilys List means hundreds of thousands of dollars. Peggy wouldn’t care if Betty Boop was on the list with her.

  4. Dan oh Dan.
Take a look at the list.
The women who are not incumbents are serious challengers or candidates. They have real campaigns. Unlike Peggy’s team of Rick “If Howard Dean had not dumped me he’d be President”
Ridder who is on safari or something and Sheila “Hey, it ain’t official yet” McDonald. Peggy has a team that shows up to pick up paychecks. The candidates backed by Emily’s List have serious organizations, have raised lots of money and know what they are doing.
Peggy should stand up and seek an office she can win instead of dividing the party

  5. Coloradopols, How ya ever going to make a buck, when you missed this opportunity to have Peggy “I support Bill Owens” Lamm pay for her advertisment.

  6. My point with Emily’s list is that I expected better form them. They ARE a huge funding source and it would simply seem more practical to spend that money in races where they can possibly afect the outcome.

BTW, it is extraordinarily rare for someone who was beaten one in a race to come back and beat the now-incumbant who beat them last time.

  7. Jason,

Really, nice work for Ed.  Have you gotten any word yet whether your efforts are going to pay off (literally)–what with “handling” him at various events, fundraising for him, and lobbying for a place on his team, not to mention your concerted efforts on this blog?

  8. Cotapaxi Jo
Facts are terrible little things are they not?
Perhaps your time could be beter spent convincing Peggy that this is not in the cards.
Nice lady, good person just is not going to happen

  9. Not Time
    You are wrong.
They will support first time challengers in primaries. In fact that is what they are famous for. Sounds like one of Peggy’s minions making excuses. Did this one come from Sheila “Hey it is not a done deal yet” McDonald or Peggy herself.
Probably Peggy. Rick Ridder who is getting the big bucks from Peggy is on sabatical so it is kind of hard to know who is in charge over there. Must say it kind of calls into question the business acumen of Peggy, hiring a big bucks consultant who decides to take a vaction on you.
Peggy stop listening to the fast buck guys and run for Statewide Office

  10. I hear that Peggy Lamm supported pro-life Bill Owens against pro-choice Rollie Heath, and maybe that is why Emily’s List is not warming up to her.  I had no idea Peggy did that but someone I know and respect showed me her name on Owen’s campaign material.

  11. Dan, I don’t know who you meant to refer to by saying it is extremely rare for a loser in one race to run again against the now-incumbent and win.  In the context of Lamm-Permutter, I don’t know what you mean, because neither ever ran for Congress against Beauprez.  Permutter toyed with it, in fact the district was crafted to his specifications, but he stood down for Mike Feeley.  It is, of course, rare for instant replay races to bring a different result, but I have seen it happen.  In 1964, Democrat Roy McVicker but incumbent Republican Don Brotzman in the Colorado 2nd CD, aided by the LBJ landslide.  In 1966, Brotzman won the seat back and held it until 1974 when Tim Wirth and Watergate beat him.  At that point, he gave up and went to Washington to lobby.  I normally appreciate your comments, so please clarify what you meant by that reference in the context of a lamm-Perlmutter primary.

  12. Belay the latter request, Dan, the context confused me.  I see now you were referring to EMILY’s decision to fund an instant replay between Shays and Ferrill in Conn. And obviously, I should have said McVicker BEAT Brotzman in 64, not BUT.  My age is showing in my typing, I’m afraid.

  13. I understand the problem there AcidRefluxRising!

Emily’s list is also funding a doomed rematch in PA-6 and a near rematch in FL-11. (one family member lost, another is running).

It would seem to me that Emily’s list would jump at the chance to make a difference in a dsitrict like CO-7 where an opposition incumbant is not running again and there is a chance to get a supporter elected.

  14. But, Big Dan who is the supporter of Emily’s List.
Peggy endorsed Bill Owens for reelection and appeared on campaign literature.
Peggy is a good person this is just not her race.
If you have some juice with her Dan talk her into going statewide. Or, give me one good reason why she should not do so?

  15. Hey Terry, was it emotionally difficult for you to give up the name Vladimir for your new Lamm for Treasurer moniker?  Subtle, buddy, subtle.

Reasons to vote for Peggy, you ask:
    1. Voted to fund public schools, not private schools vouchers like Ed
    2. Voted for equal rights for ALL Coloradans, which Ed somehow disagrees with.
    3. Independent and strong-willed, doesn’t just go along with 17th street lawyer & developer crowd.
    4. A strong enough leader that she was willing to jump in even if Beauprez ran, unlike Ed.
