Shaun Boyd's Reality Check Dismantles Cory Gardner, Again

  • by: Colorado Pols

The last few weeks have been very hard on GOP U.S. Senate candidate Cory Gardner, with numerous objective news sources debunking claims Gardner has relied on to escape his unsightly past record on reproductive choice and contraception. The latest this past Friday was from CBS4's Shaun Boyd:

Key excerpts:

GARDNER: I believe the pill ought to be available over the counter around the clock without a prescription.

BOYD: That's true. Gardner penned an op-ed calling for birth control bills to be available over the counter without a prescription, and for a provision of Obamacare that prevents insurers from covering the drugs without a prescription to be repealed. Even though he has opposed requiring insurers to require birth control in the past…

GARDNER: Mark Udall's plan is different. He wants to keep government bureaucrats between you and your health care plan.  That means more politics, and more profits for drug companies. My plan means more rights, more freedom, and more control for you.

BOYD: That's spin. Arguably both plans involved government bureaucrats. Udall supports Obamacare, that requires insurance to cover all birth control. And okay. That has meant more politics. But if Obamacare is repealed, something Gardner has voted to do repeatedly, insurers wouldn't have to pay for any birth control whether it is over the counter or not. Hard to see whether that is more rights, more freedom and more control for women.

Finally, you should know that Gardner is sponsor of a federal Personhood measure that could outlaw many types of birth control including the pill. Bottom line, this isn't about birth control, it's about the female vote. Cory Gardner wants to be seen as pro-women, but his overall record on birth control is not the best example of that. [Pols emphasis]

We don't always agree with Boyd's conclusions in her Reality Check series, but we're big fans of her matter-of-fact delivery in this one. Overall, Boyd's frank style of reporting is very persuasive with the kinds of working class family types who watch local broadcast evening news. To have won over Shaun Boyd on this key issue in the U.S. Senate race is a big coup for Democrats, and demonstrative of the growing consensus among just about all the media voters will come across that Gardner is not being honest about his position on abortion and contraception.

If you're tired of hearing it, keep in mind: many voters still haven't. And that's why more "reality checks" are needed.

  1. Every damn day, a new official beat-down for shameless bald-faced liar, hypocrite and grifter Con Man Cory Gardner.

How many beat-downs does it take to reach the center of a bought-and-paid-for Kochie Roll Kochie Pop?

    The world may soon know.

    1. DP, this was my first laugh of the day. How long did it take you to think that one up? You should write political ads. At least people would get a good giggle out of them for a change.

      1. Thanks, cook. For better or worse, this stuff comes instantaneously into my slightly warped mind the moment I encounter the cynical, fraudulent, vacuous bilge of the extreme right.

I have a strong sense of honor, fair play and justice, and the Bagger contingent violates that sense at virtually every turn, with every utterance. In a perverse sense, I find them remarkably inspirational.

  2. I promised BlueCat I would stop posting the head horse animated .gif, but the point stands. Why doesn't Mark Udall want to talk about anything besides abortion? It must be terribly difficult to run a campaign on no issues, just one broken record attack.

      1. A. It's only true in a cheap shot "gotcha" sense, since nobody believes Gardner really wanted to ban birth control, and

        B. I only think it's effective to a point, hence my dead horse analogy. I think Dems have won every vote they're going to get from abortion and if you had anything else to run on, you would change the subject. But you don't. Obamacare is a failure, the economy is a mess, and foreign policy under Obama is a disaster.

There's my Politics 101, 2 cents, whatever you want to call it.

        1. Quit letting old white faux-christian men meddle in women's health care decisions, and it CEASES to be an issue — THAT'S Politics 101.

And you will be beaten in November by Senator Udall, for a host of reasons. If you want to placate yourself by shortsightedly insisting that it was only because of abortion, do so.

        2. Right, Gardner does not really want to ban birth control. But, he DID want voters to think that was his poisition when he was only running in CD4. When he announced for Senate he said "I can't take that position anymore" because he was running statewide.

        3. You and your upside down world.  "foreign policy under Obama is a disaster" is to the rest of us "none of our young men and women are perishing to protect dinosaur poop".  Idiot.

        1. Oh, I know this one.  Only women of low moral character would consider having sex for personal enjoyment.  Men…well, boys will be boys.

If women weren't always tempting men by having lady parts and smelling nice, men wouldn't need to have vasectomies.  We're unable to control ourselves, so our sterilization (and our erectionalizing too– don't forget penis pills are covered) needs to be paid for.

Conservatives would have women cover themselves from head to toe so that they were safe for men to interact with, because urges, but, again, another great idea stolen by the Islamists.

        2. Cory's plan includes repealing the provision of Obamacare that denies reimbursements for OTC birth control. That's in Shaun Boyd's report. That means women with insurance would still get birth control without cost.

          Let's have an honest discussion.

          1. OK, Let's.

First, let's note that the ACA doesn't stop OTC birth control from being covered.  It does make it more cumbersome because it requires a woman to get a prescription for the OTC drug to be covered.

Nest, you can't get an IUD or implant contraception or a Depo shot over the counter, should these also be covered without cost?  Especially considering that these methods of birth control are more effective than the pill, and many women cannot take the pill for health reasons.

Third, Cory is a cosponsor of the Life at Conception Act.  This bill contains the following language, "Human person; human being.–The terms human person'' and human being'' include each and every member of the species homo sapiens at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization…"   How can contraceptive methods, IUDs pills, implants. for example, that work, in part, by preventing the implantation of a fertilized egg into the uterus be allowed under that definition of personhood?

          2. First of all, Pcat – yes

Second, Modster – very few insurances pay for OTC anything – your Advil and bandaids and condoms and whatnot – were never reimbursed by your run-of-the-mill Blue Cross or Kaiser plan. Cook keeps bringing up the difference between OTC and OTS (off the shelf) but Cory has never been specific about what he proposes, so it could be either – and FDA approval requires a Federal agency, which Cory hates, so I doubt that FDA-approved anything would be part of a "plan".

And that's probably a good thing – Otherwise the super-duper organic lavender rub-this-on-your-sexy-parts birth control would be bought by many bargain-hunters, and we would have many more unplanned pregnancies as a result.

Basically, as Pols, and others have said many times,Cory's OTC birth control deal is a fake deal – and the aim is to weaken Obamacare, weaken women's abilities to obtain effective birth control by removing insurance coverage, while seeming to be friendly to the idea of contraception in general.

"Women with insurance would still get birth control without cost". We get that now….and we can buy OTC or OTS products out of pocket now. How does Cory's plan improve anything?

            1. Sleight of hand. Doublespeak, Smoke and mirrors.

IOW, yet another cynical attempt by GOTP frauds to confuse, obfuscate and deceive, in order to gain unearned electoral support under patently false pretenses.

Bottom line: GOTPers do not want women to havee any access to an abortion under any circumstance or condition whatsoever: they believe life begins at fertilization, and that all social responsibility for that life ends permanently at the moment of delivery; and don't want women under any circumstances to have ready access to safe and reliable methods of birth control.

Everything else they might bleat re these topics is just so much foul gas and white noise (emphasis on white), meant solely to confuse and mislead female voters.
