Major Change to Commenting System

  • by: Colorado Pols

Like every other popular weblog, we’re at war with spam at Coloradopols.com. Not the occasional offensive comment or press release we deal with, but the automated variety that fills our older archive entries with hundreds of ads for all manner of distasteful offerings.

As a solution to this problem, which has also had the effect of bogging our server down to a crawl, we’ve turned on Typekey commenter authentication. Registration with Typekey is easy and takes effect instantly. It  protects your anonymity and your identity (our site actually captures less data about you with Typekey turned on, but your account profile with Typekey is also unique). Once you’ve registered, simply click the ‘Remember Me’ button when you first comment and you’ll remain logged in when you return.

We’ll be going through the archives and deleting the bot-spam comments that have accumulated over the past few weeks. In the meantime, remember that online gambling is illegal, bald-spot spray looks totally fake, and “generic Viagra” is usually a sugar pill.

Note: when you sign up for Typekey, you’ll be asked if you want to send your email address to the host site when you comment. We do NOT require your email address, so you don’t need to check that box.

  1. The security feature is a paid, but at least you picked a decent approach.

If Coloradans actually want to *have* a state government, they had better vote for C.

Brian Vogt, my favorite member of the Owens administration put it nicely:

If you don’t vote for C&D this year, we’ll put it on the ballot again, and again, and again, until it passes.  There just IS NO STATE government without it.

  2. VOTE NO ON C&D.  So that my children can live in a fiscally responsible Colorado, so that my children aren’t saddled with a 3+ billion dollar debt.  Vote NO on a blank check for illegal immigrants.

  3. We were concerned that we might decrease the number of comments from readers, but the spam was becoming too much to control. We had to make a choice, unfortunately, and this was the only way to curb the spamming.

  4. TypeKey isn’t too bad, though it seems like it’s setting a session key that goes away when my browser does, so I have to keep logging in…

If people are serious about posting here, I don’t think they’ll be deterred by a sign-on.

    Good job, guvs.

  5. As governor, Bob Beauprez’s vast experience and strong leadership will provide Colorado with continued sunshine, opportunity and good cheer. For the children!

  6. As leader in the race for Colorado’s next governor, Bob Beauprez proudly announced that he wants to have it both ways. We need sunshine and opportunity! For the children!

  7. Thanks, Strider – you didn’t really have to encourage that, did you?

Is anyone else finding the frequency of having to log in to TypeKey a bit more than necessary?  Looks like about a 3-hour timeout on the coloradopols.com cookies; TypeKey cookies say they’re good for a while, but I just got pushed over to TypeKey to log back in again, too 🙁  Any way we can bump the timeout, Guvs?
