Poison Bush?

We wrote last week that NRCC officials are so worried about President Bush’s low approval ratings that they are pushing Congressman Joel Hefley to run for re-election rather than retire. But Bush may have reached a new low for unpopularity when the Republican Party of California was upset that he showed up at a fundraiser in that state. From The Associated Press:

What [Bush] did when he landed Thursday evening in California, however, didn’t suit some members of the state GOP. They said his appearance at a $1 million Republican National Committee fundraiser was poorly timed because of the upcoming special election.

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to court independents and Democrats, two voter blocs that typically haven’t supported Bush. Schwarzenegger is pushing several initiatives on the Nov. 8 ballot, including extending the probationary period for teachers, requiring public employee unions to get written permission from members before dues can be used for political purposes and capping state spending.

The governor’s campaign expressed disappointment that Bush would travel to the state to raise money just 21/2 weeks before the special election. “Unless President Bush is coming to California to hand over a check from the federal government to help us with the financial challenges we face, the visit seems ill-timed,” said Karen Hanretty, a spokeswoman for the state Republican Party…

…During a campaign stop Wednesday in Anaheim, Schwarzenegger addressed why he was passing on the opportunity to sit with Bush. “We’re in high gear right now for our campaign,” he said. “So of course, right now, it’s all about paying attention to that. So this is why I couldn’t really accept the invitation to be part of the ceremony at the Reagan Library out there.”

But he also said he was not happy the president chose to visit California so close to the November election to raise money for the RNC. To date, Schwarzenegger has yet to reach his $50 million fundraising goal to promote his ballot initiatives.

“I’ve met with the president several times in the past. We’ve worked together, and we have a good working relationship,” Schwarzenegger said, adding, “… We would have appreciated it if he had done his fundraising after Nov. 8.”

  1. “Schwarzenegger and Bush are having an unpopularity contest, and it’s unclear who’s winning.”

couldn’t have said it better myself…

according to Survey USA The Governator was at 32 approve 65 dissaprove in September and in October W was also at 32-65 in California and 38-59 overall

doesn’t get much closer than that!

  2. Ouch ouch ouch.  Well, I guess Dubya is really hitting the crapper.  So Republicans, what ever happened to our great leader?  One year ago, you loved him like he was the greatist thing since sliced bread and now a group of you don’t want him at your fudraiser?  You guys really flip-flopped on Bush.

  3. I’ll relate it back to Colorado Politics for you: Cheney is in town on Monday to stump for ROD (or did you miss that bit on the main page?)

If the leak investigation returns a large number of indictments next week, Bush and Cheney will be so poisonous that photos of candidates appearing with either of them will turn in to Democratic Party gold.  Absent indictments, they’re still heading into the tank over Iraq, and the economy is still a mixed bag at best.  2006 may be shaping up to be a hard year for Republicans, and allying yourself with the Bush Administration is likely to be a Bad Move from a voter viewpoint.

  4. Nameless, we Republicans can raise plenty of “fud” on our own.  The reason we want Cheney here is to raise hell!
Why don’t you bring in Hillary to do the same for Peggy Lamm?
