Fun With Spin

Democrat Jay Fawcett’s campaign for CD-5 issued a press release yesterday with one of the best spun headlines we’ve see in awhile:

DEMOCRAT JAY FAWCETT RAISES MORE MONEY THAN INCUMBENT JOEL HEFLEY

That’s great, except that Hefely only raised $5,000 and never does much fundraising until he gets closer to re-election. Hefley has never been one to rake in the dough, partly because he never needs it, so in truth Fawcett did raise more money than Hefley. In fact, he almost doubled Hefley’s fundraising with more than $9,000 raised. If you were going to spin it, the headline should have said, “Fawcett Nearly Doubles Joel Hefley in Fundraising.”

Hey, it never hurts to try a little spin as long as it’s accurate. Click below for the full press release (which Colorado Pols appears in, by the way)…

DEMOCRAT JAY FAWCETT RAISES MORE MONEY THAN INCUMBENT JOEL HEFLEY

Retired Air Force Lt. Colonel and Desert Storm combat veteran, Jay Fawcett who announced his bid to be the first democrat to win the CD5 Congressional seat on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 raised more money in his first reporting period than ten term Congressman Joel Hefley (R).

Fawcett raised over $9,000, most of which was raised after his announcement, three days before the end of the reporting period. Hefley raised $5000 since July 1, 2005. According to the FEC website, the most money spent by a Democrat in CD5 was $11,054 in 1996.

This is going to be a race to watch, stated CDP Chair Pat Waak.  She reiterated the recent national polling that, clearly shows Americans are looking for real leadership. They have lost faith that the current administration is doing what is in the best interest of the American people.  We are looking for change.

Since announcing Fawcett has been the hot topic with the press, and most interestingly a hot topic on the blogs.  Daily KOS, MyDD, ColoradoPols have all had threads and comments posted regarding Fawcetts candidacy.

We know the Republicans have the ability to raise more money than us, Fawcett said. But the fact is we are running this race to ensure that the constituents of CD5 get the representation they deserve.

Fawcett is listed with online fundraising site ActBlue.com and contributions can be taken at his official site www.Fawcett4Congress.com.
