Allard Proposes Giant Fake Spending Bill

Made you look, as Politico.com reports:

While senators gravely speak about the nation’s fiscal health all day during the Senate budget debate, they’re not above making purely political points aimed at embarrassing one another.

To wit: Sen. Wayne Allard, a Republican from Colorado, has crafted a massive budget amendment that claims to fund every policy proposed by Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on the presidential campaign trail. Allard’s amendment _ doomed to fail by a significant margin _ includes $1.4 trillion in spending over five years by proposing Obama’s universal health care program ($65 billion a year), expanding the Army ($6.6 billion a year) and eliminating income taxes on lower income seniors ($10 billion a year).

This is an old Senate trick during budget season, where senators take campaign rhetoric and pump up the theoretical budget numbers behind the proposals then force a vote on the matter. The political impact on Obama is minimal, since the drudgery of the Senate budget debate is unlikely to create waves in the presidential campaign. And Obama has never promised to implement his dozens of domestic policy ideas all in one budget year, but that’s not the point for Senate Republicans behind this maneuver…

Without question the most important policy work Allard has been involved with since Terri Schiavo. An appropriately meaningless coda for Allard’s Senate career.

  1. I think it has a great shot of passing.

Americans are ready for hope…and change.

For without hope, there can be no change.  And without change, there can be no hope.

We should call our Senators and tell them not to embrace hopelessness and to embrace change.  Because that is what we are all really hoping for: the hope to change.

    CHANGE! (twitch-twitch)  HOPE! (drool-twitch-twitch)

    1. of the amount that Bush’s fiscal policies have forced us to borrow from China.  Which is more important ?  Which has more impact on the dollar ?

  2. I hope every Sentor votes for it so we can get on to the business of raising middleclass taxes to grow our government to solve every problem in society.

    1. instead of ideological ranting, you would find that:

      1.  The Senate Dems kept middle class tax breaks.

      2.  The same Dems voted to end many tax breaks for the rich.

      3.  The Republicans voted against #1 and for #2.

You know, sometimes when I hear or read comments like yours, I can’t help but thinking of unkind perjoratives. Please help me reacher a higher plane of consciousness by not posting such bullshit.

  3. with egg on his face.

Mr. Obama marched to the well of the Senate to cast his vote and gave a hard glare over to the Republican side, looking for his target. “Hey Allard,” Mr. Obama was heard to shout at a level unusual for the Senate. “You working this hard?”

Somewhat sheepishly, Mr. Allard urged his colleague to vote for the plan but Mr. Obama declined, voting no. He and his colleagues then strode off. The amendment was defeated 97-0.

What an embarrassment to Colorado. We should all be thanking DICK Wadhams for giving us this political powerhouse known as Dullard.

    1. .

Voters, including some of us here,

thought it would be cute to have a Vet in Congress.

      Colorado voters put him there.

      Colorado voters reelected him.

      Blame those responsible.

      .

    1. Read my post to get an understanding of the things that Allard has actually done for this state. Just because he doesn’t seek the lime light of the national media doesn’t make him an ineffective Senator. He has done more for the military than anyone, he has secured alot of resources for this state.

      1. …and couldn’t stop laughing.  Thanks for the humor!

Oh, you were serious?  That’s even funnier!

Pork does not make a good Senator–or state executive.

        1. I dont think giving our military the tools they need to fight is pork. None of you  would know what goes on in a Senatorial office, I do. Wayne Allard stays low key and gets the job done. He’s the reason for the new baracks on Ft. Carson, the project to fix highway 16, stopping the encroachment onto the bombing range, securing more resources for NORAD space command and is currently working on the pinion canyon expansion. Just to name a few.

              1. Using money on the military can only be considered accomplishments if you think that money should be used on the military. While I think it is important that we maintain a sufficient, functional military, I think it’s more important that we create a strong education system, find a solution to millions of people without healthcare and address environmental concerns. When you look at Allard’s record that way, it’s not the least bit impressive. In fact, if the above is representative of the greatest aspects of his record, then it’s not impressive no matter how you look at it.

And just to head this off, please don’t repeat that you think I don’t want to give the military the tools they need to “protect America.” It’s not that at all. It’s more that I want to give our children the tools (and infrastructure) they need to learn and move American forward, not to mention having a sustainable world to live in.

  4. 1.4 tril over 5 years is actually a doable budget; compared to bush’s 3 tril projected spending on the war ALONE over the last 6 years.

total funding for MILITARY ALONE 2007: $439.3 Billion +/-6.9%

expanded over 5 years if it stays exactly the same: $2.196 TRILLION

Obama’s entire plan is cheaper than Bush’s war, they should have voted for it.
