Former Sen. Ben “Nighthorse” Campbell will apparently not be endorsing anyone in the 2008 Senate race. As the Rocky Mountain News reports:
Former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who says he’s not going to endorse anyone in the expected matchup of former Congressman Bob Schaffer, a Republican, and Rep. Mark Udall, the Democrat, for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Wayne Allard. Describing Schaffer as a “straight shooter” and “man of his word,” Campbell also said, “Mark Udall is the kind of guy who can vote against you 10 times and you still like him.”
Campbell apparently has as hard a time making up his mind on this race as he did in deciding what Party he would belong to.

…that the last Republican to win election to the U.S. Senate from Colo. is declining to endorse his party’s presumptive candidate in this year’s Senate race?
This can’t be good news for the Wad Man.
Technically, the last Republican to win election to the U.S. Senate from Colorado is/was Wayne Allard, in 2002.
You’re right! I forget that Allard even exists sometimes!
I love it. 🙂
as a Democrat, he beat the WADMAN.
…who didn’t even have a Macaca Problem on which Wadhams could blame his loss. What DID Wadhams use as his excuse for loosing in ’92?
Considine Who is very wealthy and put a ton of his own money in the campaign seriously out spent Campbell and still lost.
And even in ’92, the Republicans had a registration edge.
As I have noted many times Wadhams has never won a race where he did not have a registration edge.
Everyone laughed when Campbell talked about running for Governor. The Republicans are now wishing they had not laughed quite so hard.
Why are Udall and Schaffer still running neck and neck in every poll? Obama is up by ten points in Colorado in a matchup with McCain but Udall and Schaffer are tied. I don’t get it but I am sure someone else knows WHY?
1. The Senate race has received no attention compared to the Presidential race
2. Colorado is still a Republican state in terms of voter registration, so the GOP candidate always has an advantage before voters hear about the race
Also, Udall will have a very hard time shaking the liberal shadow.
either candidate would walk to Durango to get Sen. Campbell’s endorsement. He may not be the favorite of either party establishment but he is the most identifed politician with independant voters in Colorado which are quickly becoming the largest voting block.
When Senator Ben left the building, the buzzards were circling. Campbell is an endorsement nobody wants.
Better safe than repentent.
Department of Justice acknowledged Campbell was never under investigation for kickbacks or Thinkstream, it was all about his staffer, Kontnik. Even then they could only get enough evidence to pin a minor charge on her. He just didn’t want to deal with the bullsh**. I don’t think he ever liked the job enough to get drug through the mud to keep it. But, when he ran in ’98 he carried 65% of the state, and even in Pueblo County where more than 50% of the voters are Democrats, he carried almost 70% there. All but the most conservative GOPers, nearly all independents, and about half of the state’s dems voted for this guy, even after his switch. He’s in his 70’s now and has been out of the game too long to be a force, but his endorsement would still carry weight.
