Obvious Press Release Time

We keep getting this press release over and over from the Denver County Democrats, and since we think it’s funny, we’ll pass it along. The Denver Democrats announced that they are endorsing Jill Conrad for Denver Public School Board At-Large. But here’s the line that kills us: “A longtime Democratic activist, Jill Conrad is currently the only Democrat running for this seat.”

Hmmm. So, was there a big debate about this? Were you planning on endorsing a Republican? At least it was a unanimous vote.

The other great thing about this release is that they send it out every couple of days with a new date on it, only it’s the same announcement. This time we’re REALLY endorsing Jill. Before, we were just kidding.

Anyway, here’s the release…

Denver County Democrats Endorse Jill Conrad for
Denver Public School Board, At-Large

On Tuesday October 18th, the Denver County Democrats unanimously endorsed Jill Conrad for Denver Public School Board At-Large at their monthly Executive Committee meeting.  A longtime Democratic activist, Jill Conrad is currently the only Democrat running for this seat.  “The Denver Democrats are excited to announce our endorsement of Jill Conrad for the at-large position on the Denver School Board,” said Sharron Klein, Chair of the Denver County Democrats.  “Jill has proven her leadership skills through her work on our Executive Committee and of all the candidates is certainly the most knowledgeable on the issues so important to our public schools.”

An educational consultant, Jill has dedicated over ten years of her professional life to educational reform at the local, state and federal levels.  Jill currently serves as the Director for the Colorado Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, a statewide effort that prepares students for a lifetime of civic learning and participation. “I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Denver Democratic Party,” said Jill Conrad.  “As an active Democrat myself, I know how hard the party works to create a better quality of life and better opportunities for all Denverites. I share those values and look forward to extending that leadership and opportunity as a Board member for Denver Public Schools.”

  2. If the Ds wait until the Thursday before election to endorse…after nine days of early voting has already been logged…there’s hope for the Republicans yet!

My understanding is that the Dems generally do not endorse candidates when there are more than one democratic candidate running (think back to the hullabaloo about Salazar/Miles).  Andrew Karsian was also running for this seat and is a registered democrat.  He withdrew and the Denver Dems voted on this endorsement at their next meeting. 

    And, no, there wasn’t a big debate on it.  The Denver Democrats (as well as the RMN and many state legislators, state school board members, and others) know that Jill is an excellent candidate for this position and will make an excellent school board member.  She’s been in the “education trenches” (if you will) and knows what she’s doing and how to effectuate postive changes to make our schools fantastic.

  4. Given that Brad Buchanan is not registered as a Dem or Rep, but he did receive the endorsement of several Dems on the City Council, the Denver Dems endorsement could actually help Jill by suggesting Brad is a Rep.

  6. Jill is not only the only Democrat in the race – she’s one of the best damned Democrats around.  She has real pertinent experience while  Brad will be/is a stuffed shirt/rubber stamp for the Hick/Bennett?s eventual city takeover of DPS.

  7. I already voted for Jill.  If I’d seen prog-matics claim that her job and intention was to go in there and trash Bennett, I’d have gone for Buchanan.  The perils of early voting. sigh.

  8. I think Prog-Matic was merely pointing out that Jill would not be a “yes-man” for Bennett.  There was no implication that she would “trash” him.  In fact, Jill has often indicated that she is looking forward to working with him to improve Denver Schools. I don’t think any of us are looking for our elected representatives to be rubber stamps to anyone.  We want them to represent the communities who elect them.

  10. Give me a break.  Jill wishes Hick paid her enough attention to try to sink her.  The fact is – Hick has his plate full campaigning for ballot initiatives.  I’ve heard him speak on the campaign trail a dozen times and he has never once mentioned the school board race.

I’m a lifelong Dem – and happy to live in a predominantly Dem city – but I also appreciate the nonpartisan nature of our school board, city council, etc.  I was going to vote for Jill, but after seeing her blatant attempts to inject party politics in the school board race and the fact that all of her endorsements are from the Dem political machine – I’m voting for the independent Brad Buchanan.

  12. If you were truly “in the know” you would be aware of the fact that Hick, behind the scenes, is in full support of Brad (and not without justifiable reasons).

  13. If Hick truly supports Buchanan, why would he do so “behind the scenes?” Just one public statement would do a world of good for Buchanan, but Hick has not seen fit to make one.

    I’m with In The Know on this one. Hick has bigger fish to fry.

  14. It’s all about Hick’s development plans for the city and where Brad can, and Jill cannot, help with his larger vision. Hick certainly has bigger fish to fry, but he’s also very aware of the minutia of smaller battles. My earlier comment that Hick is trying to “sink” Jill’s campaign is an overstatement, but anyone with genuine knowledge of Hick’s thoughts on the race know he’s backing Brad- even if it’s below the radar.

  17. I agree with Denver Dem Voter’s statements.  Brad and Jill are good candidates but I’ve seen Jill speak often and she is the one injecting partisan views into this race, not Brad.

    If this race is non-partisan, why the Dem blitz for Jill?  Brad has support from a wide range of people and it is a clear choice that he can influence our schools more than Jill.

  18. Hick is said to have a glowing appreciation for Brad’s work on urban revitalization and planning, which isn’t directly related to a school board position, but is still the prime factor in his tacit support for Brad’s campaign.

  19. Interesting Don, is it possible then that Brad has an interest in higher office and simply sees this position as a stepping stone? 

    I’ve seen Jill speak as well and not really noticed her injecting partisan tones in this race.  While she is affiliated with a party (and that party supports her as well as many other prominent officials, leaders, teachers, etc), Jill seems to focus on the fact that she has real knowledge about how to work with school systems, real experience in the education trenches, and believes in community involvement on all levels in our schools.  My vote goes to Ms. Conrad.

  21. I gotta smile just thinking of that every-other-day phone call from Jill’s campaign to the Denver Dem’s crack communications department: “Hey, we didn’t see the endorsement get picked up anywhere–can you send it out again? Maybe make the font size bigger this time?”

  22. I am fascinated at the invisibility of Latino and African-Americans in this school board race.  No kids of color in anyone’s ads.  Hick and Bennet; Jill and Brad all white.  The District is what, 70% kids of color and they are not doing well at all.  But, I guess the minority communities know their place; after all, they have been carefully taught.
