Hickenlooper Wins Top Public Official Award

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is one of eight winners of the “Public Official of the Year” for 2005, as chosen by Governing magazine.

Our initial reaction: What the hell is Governing magazine?

  1. I’m not sure it’s a “…leading magazine…” covering state and local government. It’s actually a magazine directed at elected and appointed state and local officials where common issues/problems are discussed and possible solutions provided.

I would say, if I were being rather unkind, is that Governing Magazine is to magazines, as the Cherry Cricket is to restaurants.

But, yes, that would be unkind, wouldn’t it.

  2. Since I don’t trust George’s assessments of politicians, restaurants or publications, I took the liberty of pulling the information below – verbatim from Governing’s web site:

“Governing is a monthly magazine whose primary audience is state and local government officials: governors, legislators, mayors, city managers, council members and other elected, appointed and career officials. They are the men and women who set policy for and manage the day-to-day operations of cities, counties and states, as well as such governmental bodies as school boards and special districts.”

“The magazine has a circulation of about 85,000. Besides public officials, its readers include journalists, academics, companies that provide products and services for government, and involved citizens with an interest in the governments closest to them.”

“Governing was the recipient of a 2002 Folio: magazine Editorial Excellence Award, recognizing the magazine for its February 2001 Government Performance Project issue that graded the states in five categories of management. The magazine also has been nominated four times for National Magazine Awards: in the columns and commentary for three columns by Executive Editor Alan Ehrenhalt in 2003; in the public interest category for its Government Performance Project coverage in 2001 and 1999; and for general excellence in the under-100,000 circulation category in 1996.”

“Governing is published by Congressional Quarterly, Inc., a subsidiary of the Times Publishing Co. of St. Petersburg, Florida. In 1994, Governing acquired City & State magazine, and the two publications were merged into Governing.”
