Hey McCain - If we are going to secure the borders first, what comes second ???

Question one has always been something like, “So, what happened with your illegal immigration bill?” McCain will respond by saying he got the message and America wants border security first.

Ok, fine. But what comes second? The next logical question is, “Sen. McCain the American people also defeated the bill because it amounted to amnesty. Do you renounce that part of the bill and renounce future efforts to grant amnesty to illegal aliens?”

He has never addressed the follow-up, and simply stating we will have border security first gives me the heebie-geebies about what will come next.

A Tale of Two Speeches

By Bobby Eberle

On Thursday, both former Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain addressed the audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). For Romney, CPAC set the stage for his emergence as a presidential candidate. At last year’s CPAC, Romney came away as the winner of the presidential straw poll. This year, it was the stage for his farewell address. For McCain, who skipped last year’s CPAC, Thursday’s speech was his first attempt to make nice with a conservative base he will certainly need if he hopes to win in November.

How did the two men do? It was a tale of two speeches — one set a tone for what conservatism is all about, the other focused on a set of statements emphasizing that Hillary or Obama would be worse than voting Republican.

Romney’s speech was a class act, and yes, I was a Romney supporter, and I am even more of one now. He pointed out the problems facing America, but also reminded the audience of the great strengths inherent in the American people. Through a firm belief in conservative ideals, America reached the summit as the lone remaining superpower. But with a new set of challenges, America must work to stay at the top, and Romney was clear in presenting the case for how America could do it.

On the flip side, McCain’s speech was focused on telling the audience how conservative he really is. This started even before he spoke a single word. His introduction by Sen. Tom Coburn could be summed up as follows: “Hey CPAC audience…. John McCain is conservative. Really… he is. No, I’m not joking. Hey… stop laughing. He is.”

McCain talked about immigration, and as he has often said, he now believes that we need border security first. It still amazes me that with all the talented reporters out there, that, regarding immigration reform, McCain has NEVER been asked the logical follow-up. Question one has always been something like, “So, what happened with your illegal immigration bill?” McCain will respond by saying he got the message and America wants border security first. Ok, fine. But what comes second? The next logical question is, “Sen. McCain the American people also defeated the bill because it amounted to amnesty. Do you renounce that part of the bill and renounce future efforts to grant amnesty to illegal aliens?” He has never addressed the follow-up, and simply stating we will have border security first gives me the heebie-geebies about what will come next.

McCain also mentioned a litany of what Hillary or Obama would do as president and a laundry list of liberal programs which McCain presented to show that he would not be as bad as they are. That is not good enough! We need someone who will fight for conservative government and ideals. Only that type of person will win our support in November.

    1. I posted this the other day.

The only hope for those of us who oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants and support controlling our borders is that McCain will be elected and will keep his promise to work with a Democratic-controlled congress to control those borders and enforce labor laws that prohibit hiring illegals.

Congress will decide. And many Dems are like Obama, who says illegal immigrants are scape goats. But others work for unions who will be clamoring for laws that reduce the supply of “undocumented” unemployed workers and of illegals who are taking jobs from citizens as the unemployment roles grow.

The chances that unemployment will rise to 7% or 8% are greater than the odds that they’ll go to 4% or even stay at 5%. This will put pressure on the Dems to do something to help their unemployed voters, and finding ways to get illegals to self-deport will become a top priority for McCain and the Democrats.

So illegals may become less of an issue despite the unpatriotic views of them on the parts of Obama and McCain. If you want to see the illegals problem solve, hope for a recession or growth slowdown that is serious enough to change the politicians’ minds about controlling our borders and granting a path to citizenship to illegals.

What this means for the election is that opponents to illegal immigration and amnesty should focus on getting McCain elected rather than on holding grudges.

Grudges are for kids. Compromise and accepting reality are for mature adults.

My conservative friends are not happy with me.

      1. if you posted stuff like that at Pols. I know you have a brain and know how to use it; why you prefer to throw spitballs here is beyond me.

(In case you’re missing the subtext, this is a good post.)

  1. I was saying that many months ago before Iowa.

I am, however, troubled by his assertion that being the superpower is a goal and is good.  That is not the purpose of a nation or a society.  The Founding Fathers would roll in their graves hearing shit like that.

Just ’cause you are the baddest bully on the block doesn’t mean you are moral.  In fact, usually the opposite.

If I were a Republican, I’d be upset that it looks like McCain will get the nod.  He isn’t that far right of Hillary.
