Looks like Christie went far enough this time to open up a great big nasty can of worms. Examples of his mean, petty, bullying abound and Dems will no doubt take full advantage. There's enough for many, many news cycles, including investigations to update. People might get a kick out of a Soprano wannabe as Governor of New Jersey (Jon Stewart sure does and loves all the material) but nobody wants Tony Soprano in the WH.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/25/nyregion/accounts-of-petty-retribution-reinforce-christies-bullying-image.html
The US Attorney for New Jersey – Christie's former post – is opening an investigation based on the latest allegations.
And the Maddow Show pointed out something else interesting: Christie may have been trying to run out the Assembly's subpoena power, which ends on Tuesday.
And why the lust for punishment when he was ahead by 25 points with or without the Mayor's support? It's not even hardball politics. It's personal revenge, pure and simple, on the innocents of entire communities. I hope this is a wake up call for the New Jersey voters who elected him. He'd do the same to you in a heart beat, whether you voted for him or not. As it happens, a majority of those he screwed did vote for him.
Why? Why did Nixon need to bug Watergate when he was obviously headed for a landslide against McGovern? Nixon and Christie share the same personality disorder. (BTW — James Gandolfini, rest his soul, would have played a perfect Chris Christie if they made the movie)
Yes, but I can't fill in "Only Christie could go to ______" with anything useful to our country.
True. Nixon's trip to China really did change the course of history. They are now set to pass us as the world's largest economy in just a few years. Talk about waking a sleeping giant…
Agreed, Christie is a much smaller man. Although his "Checkers" speech today might help him somewhat.
If the that was the plan, he failed. I watched the press conference where he tried the "talk 'em to death" strategy. I came away with three possible senarios:
1) people who work for him did this without his knowledge-as a manager, he's incompetent
2) People who work for him did this and he did know about it but did nothing to stop it.-he's a petty thug.
3) He told members of his staff to issue the order- he's a criminal.
I don't see how this ends well for him.
4) he hires mean, petty yes men who will carry out schemes like this because they know their boss will be very pleased
And like all good minions, know how to maintain plausible deniability for da boss.
@BC
You hit right.
We'll said.
Rightly, he's done for higher office. (I was always doubtful he could carry Ohio anyway.)
I don't know NJ politics- does this end things for him there?
Don't know Jersey politics?
Here's an amusing New York Times column:
Republican lawmakers throws a woman staffer under the bus. Yawn. Where is the news in this story?
Wow. It's always identity politics with you all the time, is it?
Rogue staff is a gender neutral.
I find it highly unlikely that Christie didn't know exactly what his staff was doing.
Me too. But he didn't fire the staff based on gender.
Abuse of power. That is the crystallized message about Christie's problem, and yet the political pundits and Dems can't seem to find those words based on what I've seen and read so far. Americans will not tolerate abuse of power by their politicians (see: Nixon). If Dems will phrase it in those terms then we can say buh-bye to Chris Christie.
Somewhere in Florida, Jeb Bush is smiling. I didn't think Christie had a chance of gaining the GOP nomination, but this takes him out and leaves the "moderate" GOP mantle to Jeb Bush. My prediction: Clinton v. Bush in 2016.
I doubt anyone as "moderate' as Jeb will be acceptable even by 2016.
One can certainly hope.
Hmmm, Sounds like you like your 'Pub candidates on the Krazy side!
Still hoping Ron Paul runs again?
I hope it's Hillary.
Because you like Hillary, or because you like the idea of her to run against?
Yes.
Christie's can of Coke just got flat.
An “ass-kicking” New Jersey response, for those who might have missed it…
I actually was on the GWB last October, and yes it did look jammed. Even an idiot hit my brother-in-law trying to merge. Actually had to stop and get out to check damages..
Christie's finished, and he will not finish the term – he will be impeached and removed along with his maladminsitration.
Gift to Fladen. Just so he can't whine about how we have a double standard, I give you a New Jersey Dem in hot water for corruption. Hey, It's New Jersey.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/09/tony-mack-corruption-trial_n_4567032.html?utm_hp_ref=politics
I am attacking, not defending, Christie. Crap that he is accused of doing makes me sick
Attacking or defending just want you know we do recognize that Ds screw up, too. Although I don't think Mack's corruption directly cost anybody their life.
SMH
I find the fact that somebody died because of this apparent bullying reprehensible.
The question of whether this pettiness cost anyone their life is debateable, BC. The EMTs in Question responded within 7 minutes. Their normal time is 3.5 minutes. whether the difference was due to this and whether that difference proved crucial is highly questionable. The real point is that anytime you interfere with traffic flow, you are at risk for interfering with First Responders. The entire concept is odious in principle. I'm not convinced it produced this result in this case yet.
Elliot called it a fact. I just said at least Mack's issues didn't cause a death.
As you say, the question of whether or not the New Jersey bridge shut down did is an open one and such a situation certainly could have. It's bad enough that it made matters worse (more time is always worse than less time in these situations) in this and other specific instances for no better reason than that Christie's posse and quite possibly Christie himself wanted to screw somebody for something that had zero effect on the outcome of an in the bag election just because they could and didn't care how many innocent lives were affected or endangered. These are all schmucks who have no business in public service. That includes Christie based on his whole record of petty revenge and bullying even in the unlikely event that he really had no knowledge of this particularly egregious event.
EHS teacher donates a kidney to a student. Anyone want to generalize about how teachers are overpaid and underworked, and the teacher's union is undermining democracy?
Hi Mamajama, You weren't on much (or at all) when I used to interact on Pols everyday. I just have to tell you how refreshing it is to see another teacher and union supporter here. I already love you.
Hey Nancy!
We met back when I was working with Jeffco Dems, and we were on opposite sides in the Bennet-Romanoff primary.
Now, we're both promoting Romanoff's candidacy for CD6. I also appreciate what you're doing with the progressive women's group. Love ya, too!
My nonpartisan post of the day. Some of these are Dems, some of these Republicans. The dog is unaffiliated…
LOL. We call men dogs when they get busted for stupidly thinking with the little head, but I'd love to know how the dog was coaxed into makig that face.
It's a red nosed pit puppy, and they have very expressive faces, but it was probably photoshopped. Still makes me giggle.
That's a Vizsla.
Yes, I guess that the ears are much bigger. Otherwise, I bet that they're often mistaken for red nose staffies. Cute!
Puppies, puppies puppies!
Enjoy!
If any commercial could push me to loving my Governor, it's that one. Thank you, Elliot.
My take on the commercial was that it was very creative but that it had a small flaw: it mixed messages in the first part, which is partly why it gave you that reaction Nancy IMHO.
It was fine until the voiceover started. It kept saying Scott Gessler but it had to be talking about someone else. Is anyone actually dumb enough to believe this? Scary thought.
Believe what? That Hickenlooper has trouble making difficult decisions? I thought plenty of people on this very page believed just that.
We're mad at Hickenlooper because he won't lead on renewable energy issues. Instead, he's just channeling his inner gas-and-oil-man.
Somehow, I don't think Mr. Gessler is going to support anti-fracking or renewable energy activists vs. the O&G industry in Colorado. Call it a hunch.
Certainly you don't imagine the things we may be mad at Hick over would lead us to vote for Gessler or any other GOTPer?
No, but I imagine you'd be sufficiently angry with him to at least laught with this ad. It is pretty well done.
Pretty cheesey if you ask me. It would have helped if the actor bore the slightest resemblance to Hick and if they had budgeted for him to be doing more outrageously or silly quirky things. Or if they had pointed to the true shortcomings that piss us of on the progressive side instead of making up stuff ranging from lies to too vague to mean anything. The stuff they try to use against him is stuff we like.
I also know enough third and fourth gen Colorado ranchers from various parts of the state to know that narrator's accent is laying it on pretty thick. I expected him to go into the Coors Banquet Beer shtick.
Any laughing would have been at the lame ad and self parodying narrator, not in appreciation of it or him.
Hickenlooper is definitely making it harder to kill school kids in large quantities. The bastard!
"Gessler doesn't wait for problems to fix themselves." Problem is, he spends too much time trying to fix non-existent problems.
Wow! Clever imagery and almost no substance! It's going to be a great campaign season, I can feel it already.
I'm sure the GOTP base will enjoy it. That is if Gessler gets as far as being nominated. The lies will be refuted this time (nobody made it harder for anyone to defend themselves, etc.) and I notice it doesn't say a word about what problems Gessler worked to solve and how he solved them. Apparently they didn't want to mention the voter fraud "crisis" with the incredibly shrinking numbers, dwindling to the point where Caldara felt he had to help Gessler out by manufacturing some himself. Besides working his ass off on voter suppression and getting his ass out of a sling on ethics charges, just what "problems" has he been working to solve now?
Can Gessler balance a budget? Inquiring minds want to know.
Apparently not. He's already blown his on pushing voter suppression as partisan tool, messing with the clerks, messing with mail ins and defending himself.
Unless Kopp fundraises $200,000 this quarter with the McCain list he has, he will have failed to meet expectations.
One thing about focusing laser-like on the grumpy old conservative demo. Really big donors, lately three of the biggest, have been dropping lie flies. It's a GOTP wide problem. Rightie seniors may vote and the rich ones may write big checks but they also tend to die on you.
Which does not mean he is not the best candidate for the job. Instead of being disappointed you could help.
Sorry, but can't feel too much sympathy for hard-nosed, hard line Republican US Senator Tom Coburn
He had a standing hold on all actions in our US Senate and filibustered numerous bills, thereby causing untold pain and suffering across our great nation and preventing the proper functioning of our government.
I don't wish cancer on anyone and I don't have any trouble sympathizing. He will, of course, get the best of care since he, no doubt, has excellent insurance. The same can't be said for many others.
I doubt this will cause him to rethink the GOTP policy of offering nothing better to responsible hard working lower income and self employed middle income Americans than the opportunity to gamble by buying insurance that wouldn't begin to cover expenses for an illness like this. Maybe it will occur to him that people don't get crappy insurance because they're "free" to do so but because that's all they can afford so they just have to hope for the best? Probably not. Even so, I wish him and his loved ones well as he faces this illness.
He gets military care. Members of Congress, the President and his senior staff, and the Justices all do. It's how they can be so insulated from just how ruinously costly medical care can be.
And they tend to only hang out with the top segment of the top 1% so they really think everybody who's un or under-insured is just blowing their money on luxuries…. like a TV and a refrigerator, instead of buying a good plan. Have you ever heard them whine about how our poor can't really be poor because they're fat and have stuff like refrigerators? Guess they should just buy all their meals at the nearest overpriced 7/11 or something.
Begrudging him whatever insurance he has is just ridiculous – he earned it.
It's nothing to do with begrudging. Those who are against universal quality coverage are the ones doing the begrudging.
"…universal quality coverage …"
No one is against that. Everyone should have the opportunity to earn it, the chance to choose to prioritize it for themselves.
But why should any adult be able to make others provide it to/for them? Why should anyone get to take that from someone else?
I feel a lot of sympathy for him. ANd I never once agreed with him.
Cancer sucks. And it's independent of a person's politics.
How do you look yourself in the mirror after wishing bad on people? You are truly an asshole, regardless of your politics.
Disagree with his politics all you want. Celebrating his illness is in humane.
Agree. The entire GOTP agenda is even more inhumane but that doesn't mean decent people should emulate righties. Being decent is its own reward.
RIP. This guy had more class than Christie ever did. Yet he was vilified by whites in his time. He was a great man who loved his city.
